ULS Mineral Resource Projects is a multi-disciplinary project house which specialises in the engineering and delivery of mineral resource projects. ULS is based in South Africa and was established in response to mine owners’ and developers’ preference for single source procurement of design and project management services.
ULS is a union of two independent engineering companies whose
respective core business offerings are key components of mineral
resource development projects. Indeed the primary motivation
for the formation of ULS was to provide the mineral project market
with a “one-stop-shop” with a difference - a company which listens
to Client needs and is flexible enough to quickly provide a solution
- be it in managing a project from cradle-to-grave or providing a
specialist niche service within the project cycle.
The collective project experience of ULS’s constituent
organisations spans more than a century. We have specific
knowledge of the African project environment where many
hundreds of projects in more than 20 countries with an aggregate
value well in excess of ten billion dollars have been successfully
delivered. Our experience is in both the private and public sectors,
and incorporates design and project management assignments in
the fields of mining, mineral processing, large scale agriculture,
industry, as well as bulk civil infrastructure.

TEChNICAL AND MANAGERIAL E XCELLENCE
Prerequisites for successfully undertaking mineral resource projects in Africa are technical and managerial excellence, coupled with sound experience in this often dynamic and always challenging environment. Executing projects in remote locations requires the engineering of enabling bulk infrastructure, project specific engineering associated with the process plant and related infrastructure, and managing the integration of these activities with other project imperatives such as safety, quality, and the environment.
ULS has over forty professionally registered engineers collectively incorporating process, civil and structural,
electrical, and mechanical engineering disciplines; project management and environmental professionals who,
together with support personnel, yield a total staff complement of more than three hundred and fifty persons.
Strengthening our own skills base are our alliance partners in the fields of mining engineering and tailings storage
and disposal, as well as an extensive network of strategic partners with expertise and experience encompassing
all aspects of mineral project development.

ULS has an effective ISO 9001 accredited Quality Management System (QMS) which in simple terms is “aimed at getting it right first time” rather than being a reactive response to substandard performance. The QMS comprises processes and controls which are implemented in a systematic manner across all of our business functions to allow us to consistently:
• exceed our client’s expectations by ensuring appropriate two-way communications are maintained thereby
ensuring that their requirements are fully understood and fulfilled
• set measurable targets to monitor our achievement toward pre-determined objectives
• evaluate our performance against these targets to identify progress
• provide appropriate resources and a suitable working environment
• monitor, audit and review our systems in order to identify areas to continually improve performance

ULS is fast and flexible with regard to the nature of the commercial model which is adopted for the delivery of each project. In addition to client preference, the selection process should take cognisance of the unique demands, constraints, and risk profile of the project.
We have experience of and are able to advise on the following commercial models – either as stand-alone
options, or in combination with each other for multi-faceted projects with a mix of risks.
• Engineering and procurement (E&P) for projects where the client elects to manage project execution itself
• Fully reimbursable engineering, procurement and construction management (EPCM)
• Single point lump sum – turnkey contracting through the provision of engineering, procurement, and
construction services (EPC)
ULS size and expertise allows to rapidly assess client needs and tailor make our responses to their particular
requirements.
PRO CES S PL A N T E XCEL L EN CE
ULS has a proven track record in the mining and metallurgical industry. We are active in most mineral
sectors including Coal, Diamonds, Copper, Ferrous, PGM’s and Rare Earths and are industry specialists in Gold
processing. The company has extensive brownfields and greenfields process plant engineering expertise from
characterisation and test work supervision, through to identifying processing solutions, design, engineering,
procurement, construction management, commissioning and ongoing operations and support.

MININ G INF R A S T RUC T URE K NOW hOW
The design and commissioning of the process plant is only one aspect of the complex mining process.
Given the location of mining projects in remote areas, the design and construction of associated infrastructure can
not only pose significant engineering challenges but can add considerably to project costs impacting on feasibility.
ULS has nearly 20 years of experience in identifying, designing and supervising the construction of mining
related infrastructure. This has included feasibility studies, specialist hydraulic and hydrological investigations,
the detailed design of infrastructure for the conveyance and storage of raw, potable, treated, and waste water;
structural steel, reinforced concrete, composite structures, and buildings. Road, terraces, storm water drainage
management infrastructure, for surfaced and unsurfaced roads, light pavements for mining villages and heavy
duty deep pavement structures for decline shaft accesses.
A F RIC A N F O OT PRIN T
ULS has an extensive project footprint in Africa. We have
successfully undertaken several hundred projects in more than twenty
African countries in the mining, industrial, and civil infrastructure
sectors. As active participants in the African project environment,
ULS has well developed relationships with contractors, suppliers,
financial and legal institutions, as well as senior government officials
in key ministries and departments. In addition to our South African
head office, country offices exist in Botswana, Tanzania, Zambia,
and Zimbabwe.

M A N AGIN G RISK : i CU CON T R AC T ME T hODOLO GY
A risk management contracting strategy on either of the FIDIC or NEC3 platforms, which is particularly well
suited to dynamic project environments. This cost effective approach – which typically yields savings of the
order of 30% relative to conventional contracting methodologies, has been successfully utilised over the past
25 years on a large number of infrastructure and mining projects. The aggregate value of projects implemented
by means of the iCU approach to date exceeds one billion dollars.
UNIQUE SOLU T IONS: T RE AT MEN T OF MININ G EF F LUEN T
Effluents produced both by mining activities and mineral processing plants require treatment to ensure that
they are safe for discharge into the environment beyond the boundaries of the mine. ULS designs processes
and associated infrastructure for cyanide detoxification facilities, and conducts audits to ensure that all cyanide
treatment and handling facilities are designed in compliance with the ICMI code of practice. ULS also designs
infrastructure for the treatment of both acid mine drainage (AMD) and general mine effluent. With specific
reference to AMD treatment, ULS employs a patented process which not only cleans AMD water, but also
recovers almost all of the dissolved pollutants for beneficiation into saleable products.
INNOvAT I v E CONSULT IN G: Ph A SED E X P ENDI T URE – E A RLY RE v ENUES (P EER)
Through our PEER (Phased Expenditure – Early Revenues) review process, we apply recognised cost-benefit
principles to enhance project viability by reducing, deferring or avoiding capital expenditure and limiting
operational expenditure. In this way we aim to breathe new life into potential projects by bringing revenue
forward and reducing and deferring costs. Working with the Client we are able to enhance internal rates of
return and turn marginal projects in sustainable mining developments.
P ERF ORM A N CE E vA LUAT IONS (MEP)
ULS has developed a Matrix of Evaluation and Performance (MEP) measurement process which provides additional
information to the metallurgical recovery calculated numbers of a given minerals processing solution. This helps
the client and plant operator to make appropriate technology choices relevant to specific conditions as opposed
to relying simply on the recommendations of the plant manufacturers selling standard solutions. This can impact
on metallurgical performance of “recovery” and significantly improve efficiencies of plant operators outputs.

S A F E T Y A S A CULT URE
ULS views safety as being fundamental to the successful outcome of all of our projects. Our goal is to nurture and promote a safety culture which effectively identifies and manages risk through recognition, evaluation, and education of our employees and clients in compliance with legislative requirements as well as state of the art professional practices to ensure that everyone goes home safely every day.
