CULTURAL COMPETENCY: THEORY AND PRACTICE IN
EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY

Icebreaker
Diversity is only about race
All you need are books with different children
Focusing on diversity promotes bias
Diversity should be taught to older children
You should teach children not to notice differences
COMMON MYTHS
I DON'T WANT TO MAKE A MISTAKE OR OFFEND ANYONE
I'M NOT FROM A DIFFERENT CULTURE.
I THINK PEOPLE FROM THOSE CULTURES SHOULD TEACH ABOUT IT
I SHOULD ONLY HAVE TO TEACH TO THE DIVERSITY IN MY CLASSROOM
I TEACH DIFFERENT CULTURES DURING "THEIR" MONTH-ISN'T THAT ENOUGH?
I DON'T FEEL COMFORTABLE TEACHING "CONTROVERSIAL" TOPICS
PEOPLE ARE ALL THE SAME INSIDE- SHOULDN'T WE FOCUS ON THAT?

FINDING YOUR WAY
"It's almost impossible for teachers to respond in culturally appropriate or sensitive ways to all the cultures
they have in their classrooms," says Elise Trumbull, senior research associate for the Culture and Language
Program at West Ed Regional Educational Laboratory in Oakland, Calif. "They don't know how to get a grip on
all the information they need or how to learn more about the cultures in their classrooms."

Children have a right to explore, experiment, wonder, and create, even if those explorations cannot
be immediately linked to measurable goals and objectives. Documenting a child’s learning is
important. Articulating the profound experiences that take place from day to day is important.
Reflecting on children’s daily routines in our programs is important.
But sometimes we can’t name all the mathematical, linguistic, and social payoffs from a morning of
rich, process-oriented exploration. Perhaps, at some point the fact that our children do the best job
they can do at being children is simply enough.”

Children are capable of learning when a word or an image is unfair or hurtful. Respond to children's questions and comments about differences even if you're not sure what to say.
Questions and comments help gather information about who they are and usually don't stem from bias or prejudice.
Observe and respond to children's curiosity. If a child is staring at or patting the head of a child whose hair is very different from hers, you can say, "He has straight hair, and you have curly hair."

Find the organizations your families need or are already using-
use that "in" to communicate
Invite families and partner organizations in - we want to visit!
Ask what is needed from kids and families-don't assume
Observe, discuss, implement, review, transition if needed- then do it again!

Multicultural education is not a a little performance.
It should be reflected in every activity, every day. - Ms. Macy

FINAL CHAPTERBooks are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined,
familiar or strange. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be
a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that
reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human
experience.” Dr. Rudine Sims-Bishop
