PKU College of Engineering 2016 Globex Speaker Series Speaker Bios Mr. Yixiong Zou (邹亦雄) of Qualcomm
Mr. Zou has been serving Qualcomm Inc. as Patent Counsel for five years. Qualcomm is one of the world's largest fabless semiconductor companies, with leading intellectual property (IP) and chips powering all aspects of the mobile internet. At Qualcomm, Zou's group is responsible for managing the vast IP portfolio of Qualcomm, including portfolio management, IP strategies, etc. Zou grew up in Beijing, China, attended Shanghai Jiaotong University. He has a BS degree in Electrical Engineering from Florida State University, and a MS degree in EE/Computer Networking from the University of Southern California. Zou began his career at Intel as a software engineer in Portland, Oregon, where he also attended law school at the Lewis & Clark College. Before joining Qualcomm, Zou worked as an attorney in the Seattle/Portland area, focusing his practice in Intellectual Property law. Dr. Yao Zhang is originally from Shanxi, China. She received her BBA from China’s Central University of Finance & Economics and her PhD from Columbia University in New York City. Yao has worked for McKinsey & Co. consulting firm, Solons Foundation, and others. She has done outstanding work in field of education innovation, and she has been awarded the Best
10 Global Citizen Service Award by the USA State Council. She has also been a guest speaker at the NAFSA, GIC Education Study and Evaluation Association, and an invited author for the leading education think tank in the US, the Hechinger Institute. She was also named Champion of the international math modeling competition. In 2016, Yao was selected for a five year term as a “Young Global Leader,” a group which was established in 2004 by the founder and CEO of the World Economic Forum at Davos, Klaus Shwab. This award encourages young leaders with extraordinary work performance and great passion. The nominators consist of government leaders, CEOs of top 500 companies, Nobel laureates, Oscar winners, and NGO leaders worldwide. Also in 2016, Yao was awarded “Innovation Ambassador” by the United Nations for her extraordinary contribution in education and technology. She also pushed forward the international cooperation of the Next Big Human Project. Yao then gave a speech regarding “Humans and Technology” at the World Summit on Innovation and Entrepreneurship. Yao is an entrepreneur with a high sense of responsibility. She is consistently trying to bring better education and brighter futures to students via robotics education. She is committed to making this world better with technology and creativity. Roboterra Inc. is a robotics education company based in Silicon Valley. The Roboterra management team consists of alumni from international universities such as Stanford, Columbia, UC Berkley, Carnegie Mellon, and NYU. Mr. Shaolong Sui is originally from Shandong. He graduated from Stanford University with a master’s degree majoring in mechanical engineering, with concentration on artificial intelligence product design. He was a core member in the Stanford robotics competition champion team. He previously worked as a mechanical design engineer for Tesla Motor and Apple. Sui is currently working as a co-‐founder of Roboterra Inc. and the CEO of Roboterra Greater China. He aims to stimulate creativity and innovation ability through robotics education. It is also his wish to
motivate teenagers to study on their own. He strongly believes that “You can achieve more than you can imagine. Welcome to the journey of innovation with Roboterra and to invent a new self!”
Robeterra is a robotics education company, with headquarters in Silicon Valley, Beijing, Shanghai and Xian. RoboTerra aims to awaken users’ potential and improve their ability through their Origin Kit and the curriculum created by education experts from Columbia University and robotic engineers from Stanford University. Dr. Su is the Deputy Director of the Department of International and Strategic Studies at the China Institute of International Studies (CIIS). She focuses on Asia-‐Pacific security and China’s foreign affairs. She has been associated with CIIS since 2004. She specializes in international security, China’s diplomacy and energy strategy. She received her bachelor’s degree from School of International Studies, Peking University in 2004, and her master’s degree in international politics from China Foreign Affairs University in 2009. Dr. Da Wei (达巍) of the China Institute of Contemporary International Relations
DA Wei is the director of the Institute of American Studies, China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations (CICIR). Prior to current position, he was the director of the president’s office of CICIR, and CICIR’s representative at Washington D.C. Da Wei’s research interests include China-‐US relations, American foreign policies and security policy, China’s foreign policy. He has published dozens of academic thesis, book chapters.
Da Wei earned his B.A. (Chinese literature) and M.A. (International Relations) degrees from the University of International Relations (UIR) in Beijing, and his Ph.D (International Relations) from CICIR. Ms. Amy Chen of Daimler
Ms. Chen is the Director of Business Innovation at Daimler Greater China. Business Innovation aims to generate profitable growth above and beyond Daimler’s current businesses. Over the last three years, Ms. Chen and her team started-‐up Car2share, grew Mercedes-‐Benz Driving Academy, while incubating other business ideas and initiatives. Ms. Chen’s professional experience includes M&A Project Director for AES in China and Manager with McKinsey & Company in Germany, while she started her career with Motorola in the US. Niandun Ye worked for China’s largest conglomerate, CITIC, before starting his own technology firm in 2015. His new firm is a “smart home” technology company. Previously he was with CITIC, a Hong Kong listed company with over 120,000 employees in Hong Kong, mainland China, and overseas. CITIC’s businesses include financial services, real estate and infrastructure, engineering contracting, resources and energy and manufacturing, as well as other businesses both in China and overseas. CITIC’s strategy is aligned with the ongoing reform and opening in China’s economy, and the company has achieved a strong financial track record, with many of CITIC’s businesses having leading market positions in their respective fields. At CITIC, Niandun focused on venture capital and private equity in primary market investments. Professor Joshua Eisenman of The Univ. of Texas and the American Foreign Policy Council
Dr. Joshua Eisenman (马佳士) is assistant professor at the University of Texas at Austin's Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs and senior fellow at the American Foreign Policy Council in Washington, DC. Between 2003-‐2005 he served as a professional policy analyst on the Congressionally-‐mandated U.S.-‐China Economic and Security Review Commission. He has also worked as a fellow at the New America Foundation and as assistant director at the Center for the National Interest (formerly The Nixon Center). Dr. Eisenman's second book, China and Africa: A Century of Engagement coauthored with former U.S. Ambassador to Ethiopia David H. Shinn, was named one of the top three books on Africa in 2012 by Foreign Affairs magazine. In 2007, he co-‐edited China and the Developing World: Beijing's Strategy for the 21st Century with U.S. Ambassador to Myanmar D. Mitchell and E. Heginbotham. His work on China and international relations has appeared in The National Interest, Current History, the International Herald Tribune, Asian Wall Street Journal, and Newsweek. Dr. Eisenman has lectured at numerous venues, including the Council on Foreign Relations, Harvard University, the Asia Society in Hong Kong, and the Central Party School of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China. Christina Larson is an award-‐winning journalist in Beijing who
writes about science, technology, and the human side of China’s economic boom. She is a contributing correspondent for Science magazine, and was previously China correspondent for Bloomberg Businessweek. Her reporting from Asia on the environment, climate change, technology, and culture has also appeared in The New York Times, The New Yorker, Scientific American, Fast Company, Smithsonian, MIT Technology Review, The New Republic, and Foreign Policy magazine, where she is a contributing editor. In addition to filing dispatches from remote corners of China, she has reported from Myanmar, Cambodia, Mongolia, Vietnam, Thailand, Korea, Japan, Greece, and Mexico. Christina was previously a staff editor at Foreign Policy and managing editor at Washington Monthly. She has been a visiting fellow at the Reuters Institute for the Study of Journalism at Oxford University; the Johns Hopkins School for Advanced International Studies in Washington, D.C.; the East-‐West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii; and the New America Foundation in Washington, D.C. An avid runner and occasional painter, she is a native of Atlanta, Georgia, and holds a B.A. from Stanford University, where she cut her teeth in journalism as the international news editor at the Stanford Daily. Christina has been a guest discussing China on the BBC, CNN, WNYC, and other TV and radio programs. Her profile of Chinese environmentalist Yong Yang is included in the 2012 anthology Chinese Characters: Fast-‐Changing Lives in a Fast-‐Changing Land. In 2008, she was named a finalist for the Livingston Award for Young Journalists (international reporting). Tian Wei is a leading TV anchorwoman in China’s international broadcasting industry. She has been the host of "World Insight" from day one, ever since the program was transformed from a weekly news roundup into a global debate show. As an interviewer, she's had exclusives with various heads of state and well-‐known
international figures from all walks of life, including: UN Secretary-‐General Ban Ki-‐moon, former U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, and various Nobel Prize Laureates. Her professional achievements have been widely recognized. In 2012 Tian Wei was named a "Young Global Leader" by the World Economic Forum. Over the years, she has also won various professional awards, including: China's National Journalism Awards, the National Award for International Broadcasters, and CCTV Host of the Year. Tian Wei aspires to be the link between China and the World. In addition to her work at CCTV, she has also been active as moderator and speaker at some of the world's most important international forums and events, such as the Davos World Economic Forum and the APEC CEO Summit. She has also been Master of Ceremonies for events and performances given by top Chinese leaders in honor of visiting foreign dignitaries. Before joining CCTV, Tian Wei was a Washington Correspondent, the only female correspondent from China at the time. Tian Wei started her career as a radio executive producer and host, establishing China's first foreign language radio talk show program. Tian Wei is actively involved and outspoken on issues of human development, environmental protection & climate change, and gender equality. She has been honored by the United Nations as a Special Advisor, a philanthropic title. She is also a member of the China Social and Economic Council, and the Chinese Western Returned Scholar Association. Ms. Rosie Blau of The Economist
Ms. Rosie Blau is the China correspondent for The Economist magazine, and she is based in Beijing. She joined The Economist in 2011, and she previously worked for the Financial Times, where she was an editor and writer. In her work as a journalist, she has covered energy, transport and a range of other areas.
