Company ProfilePIHA Pty Ltd (PIHA), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mineral Resources Limited, is a multi-disciplinary pipeline construction and civil engineering business which, since its establishment in 1993, has carved out a reputation as an industry-leader and innovator in some of the most technically challenging and advanced areas in this highly specialised field.
With its origins in the North West Shelf oil and gas industry in Western Australia, PIHA was first established as a specialist in the manufacture and installation of polyethylene pipe fittings. Today, PIHA’s premises in Perth, Western Australia include a manufacturing facility for plastics piping systems, together with a sophisticated Research & Development operation.
With a well-established market presence and outstanding track record in its key markets, PIHA is a strong growth business which continues to target new opportunities in the utilities and infrastructure, civil contracting, mining and oil & gas industries. Widely acknowledged as one of the world’s foremost innovators in polyethylene pipe technology, PIHA has carried out project work in all states of Australia and across South East Asia, providing extensive project management, construction, plant and equipment hire, maintenance and support services.
PIHA’s range of services also includes pipeline and cable installations – both open trenching and trenchless techniques – maintenance, borefield operation and project management.

COMPANy PROFILE PIHA LINING SySTEM
In recent years PIHA has refined the process of lining steel pipelines with Polyethylene Pipe to the point where almost any diameter of pipe can be lined in the workshop or onsite. PIHA is recognised as the fastest emerging multi-disciplinary pipeline construction company and largest polyethylene pipe fittings manufacturer in Australasia. The PIHA liner system has a number of applications including:
• New abrasion pipelines.
• Rehabilitations of existing abrasion pipelines
• Process piping and lined fitting
The Benefits of PE Lined Pipe• Operating temperatures up to 80ºC (subject to condition)
• High and low pressure pipelines.
• Carrying chemical and corrosive fluids
• Greater strength
• Protection from erosion and corrosion
• Reduced Friction
• Superior flow
• Shear stop flanging
• Tight fit liner
• Lining in workshop or on site
• Line single piece sections on site up to 1300 metres
The use of a single piece of PE (up to 1300m in a single section) eliminates the possibility of tear-ing and flaking of the liner. PIHA’s liner selection method means almost zero movement of the liner unlike loose fit methods.
Lining in the workshop or onsite. PIHA have premises in WA dedicated to the shop lining of steel pipe. In a recent project to replace a high pressure pipeline steel bends of
30°, 45° and 90° along with wafer tee sections, equal tee sections and straight flanged sections up to 18 metres in length were easily lined by PIHA in our workshop.
The mobility of the equipment used in this process means that lining of existing or new pipelines is not limited to the workshop. The large scale onsite lining that can take place was demonstrated in the construction of the 304km underground pipeline (300 NB) carrying zinc concentrate which was internally lined and in-stalled onsite by PIHA for the Pasminco Century Mine in North-West Queensland.
If you believe that a PIHA lining system could benefit your project or would like further information please contact us at our Bibra Lake office:

MiscellaneousPOLyETHyLENE FLANGE CONNECTIONSFlanges must be installed correctly to ensure damage does not occur during operation. Incorrect installation is the most common cause of flange joint failure. To avoid this, the following procedure should be used:
1. The flange should be assembled to the mating flange prior to welding the stub flange to the pipeline. If this is not practical the pipeline should be snaked a sufficient distance from the joint to ensure the stub can be brought squarely up to the mating flange.
2. The flange assembly must be lifted AT THE PIPE and BROUGHT SQUARELY UP TO TOUCH the mating flange PRIOR to bolting. Bringing the flanges into contact with
the mating flange using the bolts can result in breakage of stub during operation.
3. With the seal lined up, insert all bolts and tighten them until firm taking care not to damage the seal. Washers should be used under all bolts heads and nuts.
4. Tighten the bolts in the following sequence to the following torques. These torques apply for pressures up to 1000kPa.

Good join with well developed and rounded bead.
Bead too narrow and too high or curled over probably due to short pre-heat time
Bead too flat due to joining pressure which is too low.
Poor join because of the sharp notch between the two beads. The notch is sufficiently deep to effectively reduce the pipe wall thickness. The notch also acts as a point of stress concentration.
Poor join with an overlap caused by misalignment of pipes.
Poor join between pipes of different wall thickness (pressure rating). The thicker walled pipe should have been chamfered to an angle 1:4 before joining.
Poor weld with collapse of molten material.
Poor join between materials of different temperature or pipe ends that have been heated for different times.
Undersized bead due to joining at a temperature and / or a pressure which was too low.
