• Shouldrealizetheyarewatchingthematchfromanglesthatdifferfromtheplayers.Linecallsareverydifferenttomakeasatennisplayer.Itiseasytocriticizeaplayerformakingabadcallwhenyouarestandingstillwatching.Playerswhoofficiatetheirownmatchesarenotalwaysinapositiontomakequalitycalls.

AllofficialshiredforinterscholasticcompetitionatthehighschoollevelmustberegisteredwiththeNDHSAAbeforeofficiating.Out-of-stateofficialswhoofficiatecontestsinNorthDakotamustsubmitareciprocityformandfeetoNDHSAAbeforeworkinggamesormeets.RegistrationisnotcompleteuntilformsandfeeshavebeenreceivedbytheNDHSAAoffice.OfficialsregistrationwillagainbeavailableonlineonlythroughMVPandofficialsmusthaveanMVPaccountinordertoregister.OfficialsregistrationisduebeforeJuly1stofeachyear.RegistrationbetweenJuly1stofeachyearuntilthelastrulesclinicdateineachsportisavailable,howeverlatefeeswillapply. Rulescliniccompletionismandatoryforallofficialsinthesport(s)theyplantoofficiate.(SeeOnlineRulesClinicsforCoachesandOfficialsarticleinthisBULLETIN).Examsmustbetakeneachyearinthesport(s)inwhichexamsareoffered.EachbasketballofficialmusthaveofficiatedorhavebeenasupervisoratanNDHSAAapproveddaycampwithinthepreviousthreeyearstobeeligibleforof-ficiatingregionandstatetournaments.RequirementsforofficiatingvaryfromsporttosportandwillbeavailableintheirentiretyintheMayBULLETINandontheOfficials&JudgespageoftheNDHSAAwebsite. NDHSAArequeststhatsportsmanshipandgolfetiquettebeemphasizedduringthespringgolfseason.
Golfcoachesareaskedtoteachtherulesofgolfetiquettetotheirparticipants.Therehasbeenconcernthatsomeplayersarenotbeinghonestincountingtheirscoreandotherrulesarebeingbrokenbecauseofignoranceoftherules.RegionalandStatemanagersareaskedtomakeanextraeffortthisyeartoseefoursomesareproperlysupervised,rulesandsportsmanshiparecoveredinthepre-tournamentmeetingandthescoringprocedureisfollowed.
Thefollowingrulesofgolfetiquette/sportsmanshipshouldbetaughttoeachgolferandcoveredateverytournament.1.Behonest;counteverystroke.2.Makesureyouknowhowmanystrokestoaddforeachspecificpenalty.Don’tguess;askthetournamentmanagerorclubpro.3.Don’tmove,talk,orstandtooclosetoaplayerwhiles/heismakingastroke.4.Don’tplayuntilthegroupaheadofyouissafelyoutoftheway.5.Playwithoutdelaybutstaywithyourfoursome.Leavetheputtinggreenwithoutdelaywithyourfoursome.6.Eachpersonshouldcallouthis/herscoreassoonasyouhaveholedoutsothescoreisverified.7.Replacedivots,smoothoutbunkers,etc.8.Don’tstepinthelineofanothergolfer’sputt.9.Keepcontrolofyourtemper.Donotuseoffensivelanguageorthrowclubs.10.Bealady/gentlemanatalltimes.Dowhatisproperandsportsmanlike.11.Electronicdevicesarenottobeusedonthecourseatanytime.
Golf Sportsmanship Reminder
TheNDHSAAisrequestingnominationsforthe2012-13DistinguishedServiceAward.Nomineesmustexemplifythehigheststandardsofprofessionalethics,sportsmanship,moralcharacter,andcarrytheendorsementoftheirlocalhighschool.Onemaynominateanad-ministrator,boardofeducationmember,coach,contributor,fineartscoach/director,fineartsjudge,orgameofficial.
Thecriterialetterandnominationformcanbefoundatwww.ndhsaa.comunderForms.Nominationsshouldbebasedonthefollowingcriteria: *Schooladministratorswouldbeconsideredonthemeritsoftheirhighschooladministrativeachievementsandcontributionsto
interscholasticactivities. *Boardofeducationnomineeswouldbeconsideredonthemeritsoftheircontributionstointerscholasticactivities,especiallyon
astatelevel. *Coacheswouldbeconsideredonthemeritsoftheirhighschoolcoachingachievementsonly. *Contributorswouldbeindividualswhohavemadeacontributiontointerscholasticactivitiesinsomeothercapacityotherthan
thosepreviouslymentioned(mayincludesuchareasassportsmedicine,sportsmedia,orreportingotherschoolactivities). *Directorswouldbeconsideredfortheircontributionstotheinterscholasticactivitiesintheirschoolandonastatewidebasis. *Officialswouldbeconsideredonthebasisoftheirserviceasahighschoolofficial,adjudicator,judge,etc.
Allcandidateswillbejudgedontheirsignificantand/orlongtermcontributionstointerscholasticactivities.Whilemanyhaveservedtheirlocalprogramsoveralonganddistinguishedcareer,longevitywithoutmeaningfulstateimpactdoesnotconstituteappropriatecredentialsforDistinguishedServiceAwardconsideration.Theiraccomplishmentsmusthavebeenworthyofstaterecognitiontobeconsidered.
AnappointedselectionscommitteewillreviewthenominationswithafinallistsubmittedtotheentireBoardofDirectors.

INDIANAPOLIS,IN(February27,2013)—LoganCountyHighSchool,whichislocatedinRussellville,Kentucky,andMagoffinCountyHighSchool,whichislocatedinSalyersville,Kentucky,havebeenselectedthe2013nationalrecipientsofthe“NationalHighSchoolSpiritofSportAward”bytheNationalFederationofStateHighSchoolAssociations(NFHS).
The“NationalHighSchoolSpiritofSportAward”wascreatedbytheNFHStorecognizethoseindividualswhoexemplifytheidealsofthespiritofsportthatrepresentthecoremissionofeducation-basedathletics.
LoganCountyHighSchool,whichislocatedinthewesternpartofthestate,andMagoffinCountyHighSchool,located281milestotheeastintheAppalachianMountains,havenottraditionallybeencommonopponentsorrivalsinsports,norhavetheygenerallyhadmuchincommon.
ThatallchangedforeveronFriday,March2,2012,whenanEF3tornadospunupintheruralAppalachianvalleybetweenthemountainsanddescendeduponthetinytownofSalyersvillearound11:40p.m.Ittoucheddownandbegana49-milepathofdestructionthroughfourcounties.Intheprocess,scoresofbuildings,businessesandhomesweredestroyed.Boththemiddleschoolandthehighschoolwererenderedcondemnedfollowingthestorms.
ThatFridaywasthenightbeforethescheduledKentuckyHighSchoolAthleticAssociation(KHSAA)15thRegiongirlsbasketballgamebetweenMagoffinCountyandPaintsvilleHighSchool.Aftermuchdiscussion,thegamewasmovedtoMondaynight,justtwodaysbeforethestartofthestatetournament.BeforeaverysmallcontingentofMagoffinCountyfans-manyofwhomnowowningonlytheclothesontheirbacks-theLadyHornetsdefeatedPaintsville,49-40.MagoffinCountycoachScottCastlehadbecometheinspirationalleaderoftheteammembersastheyfoughtbackemotionstotrytoenjoytheregionalwin,proudlyproclaiming“Oneteam.Onegoal.OnePromise.WeareMagoffin.”
Whilethatwasinandofitselfbothverymovingandinspirational,itmerelysetthestageforwhatwastofollow.
TwodayslaterattheKHSAASweet16®girlsstatebasketballtournamentinBowlingGreen,MagoffinCountywaspittedagainstAshlandBlazerHighSchoolfromthe16thRegion,amuchlargerschoolanditsgeographicneighborlocatedinanareathatwasalsodevastatedbythetornado.Priortothegame,thetwoteamsgatheredatcentercourtforamomentofsilenceandthencelebratedsurvival.Aftertrailinginthesecondhalf,MagoffinCountycamebacktowin,63-59.
LoganCountycoachScotMcAlisterwasinthestandsthatnightashebecameinspiredwatchingtheundersizedbutfeistyMagoffinCountyteamupsetAshlandBlazer.Asaresult,hedecidedtoofferhisfacilitytoMagoffinCountyasa“homeawayfromhome”inwhichitcouldpractice,seekrefugeorjustgetaway.WhentheLadyHornetsarrivedatLoganCounty,theywereamazedtobegreetedby300student-athleteswhohadorganizedapeprallyandapizzapartyintheirhonor.
Givinguptheirowntimeandattheirownexpense,theLoganCountystudentsdrove30milesfromRussellvilletoDiddleArenainBowl-ingGreen,wheretheyfilledoneoftheendzoneswithstudentsdressedintheMagoffinCountyschoolcolors.Throughoutthegame,theLoganCountycontingententhusiasticallysupportedMagoffinCountywithvoraciouscheersandchantsthattheyhadpracticedbothatschoolandenroutetothegame.Theemotioninthearenawaselectric.
AlthoughMagoffinCountylostthatgametoLincolnCounty,LoganCounty’sselflessinvolvementbecamethebigstoryofthetourna-ment.Sincethatgame,thestudentsfrombothschoolshavestayedintouchandforgedlifetimefriendshipsasindividualswhomighthaveotherwiseneverseeneachotheragain.
Ninemonthslater,theMagoffinstudentsdecidedthattheywantedtopaybacktheLoganCountygirlsteambycomingtoitsfirsthomegame.OnDecember1,busloadsofMagoffinCountystudentsmadethefive-hourdrivefromSalyersvilletoRussellville.OnlyafewLoganCountyschooladministratorswereawareofMagoffinCounty’simpendingarrivalattheirgame.Astheypouredintothegymthatnight,itwasveryapparenttheimpactithadonMcAlister,whowasmovedtotears.“WhenyoudotherightthinglikewedidinMarch,youreallydon’texpectanythinginreturn,”hesaid.AlthoughLoganCountywasnotabletowinthatgame,theplayers’andfans’heartswereenrichedbythevisitfromtheirnewfriends.Usingtheirownpre-rehearsedcheers,theMagoffinCountystudentssupportedLoganCounty.
