ALCOHOL ABUSE About 600,000

college students are unintentionally injured under the influence of alcohol each year.

Almost 2,000 college students die each year from alcohol-related injuries including motor vehicle accidents.

DRUG ABUSE The percent of college

students who admit to smoking marijuana at least 20 days a month increased from 1.9 percent in 1993 to 4 percent in 2005.

The percent of college students who admit to using other illegal drugs like cocaine and heroin in the past month increased from 5.4 percent in 1993 to 8.2 percent in 2005.

SLEEP DEPRIVATION

According to the Journal of Adolescent Health, 70 percent of all college students receive less than eight hours of sleep a night due to engaging in other activities.

UNHEALTHY WEIGHT GAIN 1 in 4 college

freshman gain at least 5 percent of their body weight during their first semester. This is an average of about 10 pounds per student.

This can be due to unhealthy eating, alcohol consumption, and lack of exercise.

UNSAFE SEXUAL ACTIVITES

19 million new STDs reported each year are among people between 15 and 24-years-old.

College students attributed to the 39 percent of all new HIV infections reported in 2009.
