Why?Gives children the building blocks for learning to read and write.

What?Phonics is the teaching of units of sounds that we use in English which make up words.

A phoneme = the smallest unit of sound e.g “a”

How?The English language has 44 phonemes

They should be taught to write each letter, forming it accurately.

Children are taught to produce the sounds as shortly as possible, e.g no ‘uh’ on the end of ‘d’ and ‘g’.

It is very important to pronounce the sounds correctly!

There are 6 phases to teaching phonics. Children progress through them and by year 2 or 3 should be working in phase 6.Each phase also has tricky words to learn to read and write.

Phase 1:Good listening skills

Speaking and listening skills (games)

Rhyme

Alliteration

Phase 1 outcomes:

They may be able to distinguish between speech sounds.

Many - blend and segment orallySome - recognise words that rhyme and be

able to provide a string of rhyming words.These skills need to continue through the

other phases.

Letters and Sounds:Phase 2

19 phonemes and graphemes (satpin),

Blend and segmentTricky words ( I , no, go, to, the)

Big

Letters and Sounds:Phase 3

Next 25 graphemes - e.g sh, ch, th, ng, igh, ai, ee,

oo , .................

Learn to write tricky words and new ones to learn – he, she, me,was,they ... etc

By end of phase 3 children will e able to read sentences like.

Can a chicken sit on a chair?They will make a good attempt at writing these sentences using their phonics too.

Phase 4

Children learn no new phonemes however need to be able to blend and segment longer words.

e.g trench, twisting, chimpanzee .

Phase 4 is about applying what they have learnt .

Phase 5Children learn alternatives graphemes 9 way of writing ) sounds.

For example I can be written as igh as in light

ie as in tie i as in mind y as in fly

This phase will take children a year to learn and apply.

Phase 6Involves children learning the spelling conventions of English.

For example suffixes ( endings for words) such as s,- ed- ing - ly .....

Spelling longer words.

Year 1 screening

Government screen children in June nationally.

How to help...

Play phonics related games at home e.g eye spyHelp them learn their sounds BUT make sure you are saying them correctly.Ask staff if you are not clear on how phonics works.Read with children and encourage them to use their phonics knowledge.Encourage children to write using their phonics.
