OUR LADY OF FATIMA ATHLETIC NEWS
Congratulations to our Grade 7 boys’ cross country
team, who placed 3rd at the board tournament on
October 29 at Centennial Park. Great season,
looking forward to it again next year.
Congratulations to our intermediate boys and girls’
volleyball teams who just recently played in the
BW mini tournaments
INDOOR SHOES We would like to remind parents to send an extra
pair of shoes to school with their child/ren. The
muddy weather is definitely upon us, and the extra
pair of shoes would help to reduce the tracking of
outdoor mud into the classrooms. Please be aware
that students must have the proper indoor gym
shoes to participate during gym time.
WINTER - EXPOSURE TO EXTREME COLD At rest, an unprotected person is able to maintain
their core body temperature until the
temperature falls to or below minus 25 degrees
Celsius. The main risks of exposure to extremely
cold weather for relatively short periods (recess
or lunch periods) is that of frostbite. Someone
who is protected by clothing or is physically active
may be able to withstand exposure to colder
temperatures.
In the past, the temperature at which frostbite
initially posed risk was based on a healthy adult.
However, there are others who are at greater
risk. For example, children, seniors, people with
circulatory problems, people taking certain
prescription medications, etc.
The amount of time outdoors should be reduced
for children (grade 8 and under) when the
temperature is -20 degrees Celsius or colder.
When the temperature or equivalent wind chill
temperature is minus 25 degrees Celsius or lower
children shall be kept indoors.
What is the Wind Chill Factor?
On a windy day, it feels much colder outdoors
compared to a day without wind. This apparent
coldness is due to a rapid cooling effect produced
by the wind. The wind chill factor is a measure of
the combined chilling effect of temperature and
the wind and represents the real rate of how fast
an object (or person) cools.
For determining the present outside temperature
and wind chill factor, log on to the following
website and search by city.
http://www.weatheroffice.gc.ca/city/pages/on-
24_metric_e.html
Cold Weather Guidelines for Schools
Peel Health has made the following
recommendations regarding the steps to be taken
to prevent cold injuries:
1. Establish both a policy and plan to deal
with extreme temperatures and winter
storms;
2. Reduce the amount of time children (grade
8 and under) spend outdoors when the
temperature is -20 degrees Celsius or
colder, with or without wind chill. Keep
children indoors when the temperature is -
25 degrees Celsius or colder, with or
without wind chill. Some medical conditions
may increase sensitivity to cold, parents
should consult their physician (Source:
Environment Canada);
3. Allow indoor breaks if children say they
are feeling cold or during extreme
temperatures;
4. Ensure children are dressed warmly,
covering exposed skin: insulated boots,
winter weight coats, mittens, hats, and
neck warmers;
5. Change wet clothing or footwear
immediately;
6. Although these conditions are unlikely to
occur during the school day, ensure that
all staff are able to recognize and treat
symptoms of frostbite and hypothermia.
Give plenty of warm fluids to prevent
dehydration;
7. When children are outside, be watchful
for shivering or signs of numbness in
faces, ears, hands or feet;
8. Educate children in dealing with cold
weather: drinking plenty of fluids, dressing
warmly, and recognizing signs of cold
injury, etc.
Cold Weather Guidelines for schools are also
available at the following link:
http://www.peelregion.ca/health/cold/extreme-
cold/schools.htm
DRESSING FOR THE WEATHER -
CHANGE OF CLOTHING With the cold and wet weather come wet socks,
pants, etc. We encourage parents to send an
extra pair of socks, pants, etc. especially for the
younger children. If they do get wet, they will
have a change of clothing and we will not need to
interrupt your work schedule.
CHRISTMAS BREAK The Christmas Break shall be from Monday
December 24 to Friday January 4 inclusive.
SCHOOL OPERATIONS
SAFETY IN THE SCHOOL YARD In order to avoid injury and to help ensure
student safety, students are frequently reminded
over the PA, and by their classroom teachers, to
play safely in the school yard. Students are
advised of the board regulation not to throw
snowballs, or kick snow, as well as to stay off snow
hills and off any ice patches. Play fighting and
contact sports are not permitted. Students are
reminded to report problems to the teacher on
duty, rather than taking matters into their own
hands. Please review with your child the
importance of playing safely in the school yard and
to use their W.I.T.S. (Walk away, Ignore, Talk
it out, Speak with a teacher).
WEATHER CONDITIONS During the winter months, inclement weather
and/or poor road conditions may cause the
disruption of bus transportation and regular
school operations. In these cases,
parents/guardians should develop alternate
care/transportation arrangements.
A decision to cancel bus transportation and/or to
close schools is made by 6:00 a.m. Decisions are
based on several factors including precipitation,
air temperature and road conditions. A decision to
cancel bus transportation may be system wide
(where all buses in Dufferin County and the Region
of Peel are cancelled) or municipality specific
(where buses in one or more municipalities are
cancelled).
If buses are cancelled in the morning, they will not
operate in the afternoon. Therefore, students
transported to school by parents require the same
transportation home. Please see attached for
more information.
Our Families
SCHOOL COUNCIL NEWS – CHRISTMAS
MARKET Our School Council would like to thank all parents,
staff, and the entire school community for making
our Christmas market such a success! With your
support we were able to raise over $1,400 which
will go directly to funding families in need in our
school, as well as enhancing our students'
experience this year. Please join us at our next
meeting on January 14, at 6:00 p.m. to share your
ideas for the coming months.
We wish you all a blessed Christmas and a happy
and healthy New Year.
STUDENT ABSENCE/LATE ARRIVALS We ask that parents continue to call to notify the
school each day if their child will be absent and/or
late. Your phone call to attendance line regarding
their attendance will ensure safe arrival to the
school. Remember that you can call the school
24/7 to report your child’s absence at 905-
459-4737 and leave a message on the
attendance line. Students who are late must
report to the office and sign in. School staff is on
duty at 8:15 a.m. in the morning. There is no
supervision for students before 8:315 a.m. and
students should not be dropped off prior for
safety reasons. Students should arrive on time
each day to line up and enter the school with the
rest of their class.
DROPPING OFF LUNCHES If you are bringing a lunch to the school for your
child, please follow our procedure:
Place the lunch on table outside of the
main office
Ensure your child’s name is on the lunch
Ensure your child knows, before school,
that a lunch will be coming to school for
him/her.
If students are to leave the school grounds at any
time during the day, please advise the school in
the form of a note. These measures will enable us
to be aware of students’ whereabouts in order to
better ensure their safety.
PHONE MESSAGES FOR STUDENTS In order to minimize disruptions in the classroom,
we do not relay phone messages to students,
except in case of an emergency, in which case
the student is brought to the office and given the
message. We trust you will understand the need
for this policy.
FLU SEASON To reduce the spread of illness in schools, certain
measures such as hand hygiene, cough/sneeze
etiquette, staying home when ill and keeping the
school environment clean – can prevent or reduce
the spread of influenza.
Parents and guardians are reminded of the
following:
1. Wash your hands frequently
2. Practice good hygiene
3. Eat nutritiously
4. Get lots of sleep
5. Monitor health
SAFETY AT SCHOOL Please review the following items to help us
provide a safe learning environment for your
children here at Our Lady of Fatima School:
All parents/visitors are required to sign in
at the main office and receive a visitor’s
sticker. Unless you have an appointment
with a teacher or volunteering parents
should not be in the school during school
hours.
If students are leaving school early,
parents are asked to notify the teacher
by note and pick up their children at the
office and sign them out.
When meeting students at dismissal times,
parents must wait outside the school
entrances and not in the hallways of the
school.
Parents are not to be in the school yard
during recess times, which includes 8:15
A.M.—8:30 A.M. (Please remember that
to most of the children in the yard,
including the teachers on duty, you are
a stranger.)
Please be reminded that the school day
begins at 8:30 AM. (There will be staff
on duty beginning at 8:15 A.M. Please
do not drop off your children, or send
them to school, before these times as
supervision will not be available. This
also applies to inclement weather days.)
For the safety of all please remind your
children not to walk through the parking
lot when arriving at or leaving school.
(Students have been instructed to use
the adjacent walk ways.)
If you are picking up your child/ren
please make sure you are here at 3:00
p.m. dismissal.
Thank you for your cooperation and
understanding.
CUSTODY OF CHILDREN On rare occasions, we are faced with difficult
situations in which non-custodial parents arrive at
school asking to visit their child or to take their
child home after school. We are best able to serve
and protect students when we are made aware of
legal custody arrangements, visitation rights and
other special instructions. If legal custody
matters affect your family, please ensure that the
main office is aware of any custodial arrangements
that may affect your child during school hours.
KISS & RIDE PROGRAM We thank those parents who use
our Kiss N Ride daily in the
proper manner. Please remember
that the Kiss N Ride lane is not a
parking lane. Please do not park and exit your
car while accessing the Kiss N Ride program.
Kiss & Ride lanes are for the purpose of quick
disembarking of students. Within all Region of
Peel schools, children who are capable of safely
opening and closing car doors by themselves,
should access the Kiss & Ride lane. It is
understood that parents of younger children feel
it necessary to get out of their cars and escort
their children safely onto school property. If this
is your situation, please access the school parking
lot or park along Sunset Blvd within the
designated areas. Kiss & Ride is a convenience
provided to parents with the intention of adults
remaining in their cars and exiting the area quickly
once their children have safely left the vehicle
and are independently moving toward the school
entry door assigned to their class. Please be
aware that the City of Brampton Parking Control
may be monitoring our Kiss and Ride program in
the near future to ensure the safety of all of our
students. Once again we appreciate your
cooperation and support in bringing our students
to and from Our Lady of Fatima School safely
each day.
PEEL PUBLIC HEALTH SCHOOL DENTAL
SCREENING
(Only for Grades JK, SK, 2, 7) “Peel Public Health is offering FREE dental
screenings as required by the Ontario Ministry of
Health and Long-Term Care for students in JK,
SK, 2, 7, on January 24, 2019. Please note that
screening may be completed earlier than the
expected end date. A dental screening is a quick
assessment by a Registered Dental Hygienist who
will take a look inside your child's mouth. A
separate, sterilized mouth mirror is used for each
child. After Dental Screening, a form with the
results will go home with every child screened and
the parent may be contacted by a dental staff
member. A second dental screening may be
required to ensure that your child has received
the necessary dental treatment. Peel Public Health
will no longer be sending out paper exemption
forms. If you DO NOT want your child to be
screened, please visit

CHRISTMAS BASKETS
… DELIVERING PEACE, LOVE, HOPE and
JOY
‘Tis less than a month before Christmas, and the
students and staff of Our Lady of Fatima School
gather to help and hand out Christmas baskets to
the needy families in our community.
In preparation for the big day, we are appealing to
our fabulous community to support each other
during this blessed season. Each class is being
asked to provide some Christmas joy by donating
items to be delivered to a family who need some
extra support this year. Details about those in
need will be provided to each class through a
newsletter. If you can support in any way, it is
greatly appreciated that you send your
contribution into the school by Tuesday,
December 11, 2018.
The Christmas basket distribution is the result of
a community-wide effort – from the people who
donate money, gift cards and gifts to the
volunteers who help sort, prepare and distribute
the baskets.
We greatly appreciate your support and
generosity at this very special time of the year.
Please support our Christmas Basket project.
As a staff, we always appreciate the gifts we
receive from our students. In the spirit of giving,
we, as a staff, ask that instead of purchasing a
gift for teachers this year, to instead consider
supporting the families in need within our
school community
Christmas Blessings to All!

A MESSAGE FROM YOUR CATHOLIC
SCHOOL TRUSTEE December 2018 Newsletter
Anna da Silva, B.A. M.A. Trustee, Brampton Wards 1,3 & 4 Vice-Chair of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board anna.dasilva@dpcdsb.org, 416-706-5679, Twitter @ampodesta Facebook Anna da Silva
Hello everyone: First of all, I want to thank you all very much for your support during the past election and for re-electing me to the Board of Trustees. I feel very honored and privileged to represent the families of Wards 1,3 & 4 on the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board (DPCDSB). Thank you all very much for such a strong vote of confidence. I am glad to say that both Darryl D’Souza and Shawn Xaviour are also back on the board this term. We all look forward to working together for the Catholic ratepayers in the City of Brampton. Two long-time Mississauga trustees are retiring from the DPCDSB this year. We honour and thank Esther O’Toole for her 27 years of service. Her contributions over the years in Mississauga’s Wards 2, 4, 9 and 10 have made a difference in the lives of the children in her schools. We wish Esther the very best as she moves on to new adventures with work and family. We also say farewell and thank you to Anna Abbruscato, who has represented Mississauga Ward 4 for 24 years. We thank Anna for her years of dedication.
We welcome Brea Corbet, representing Mississauga Wards 9 & 10 and Stefano Pascucci, representing Mississauga Ward 4. Both new trustees were sworn in as part of the 2018-2022 Board of Trustees on December 4.
As you may be aware, there have been some changes to Brampton City Council as a result of the recent election. While the incumbents for
Wards 3 & 4 were re-elected, we have a new mayor and two new councilors in Ward 1. I have been reaching out to these newly-elected individuals and I am glad to say that I was able to meet with Mayor-elect, Patrick Brown, as well as with Councilors Rowena Santos and Paul Vincenti. These meetings have been very positive, and I am pleased to say that all of them support Catholic education in our city. I look forward to working closely with them, on behalf of the DPCDSB, during the upcoming term. One of the items that I have been advocating for with the City is reduced transit fares for students. When I was elected last term, I advocated with City Council and supported parents on a proposal to allow students to ride on the city transit with the student card for a dollar. The proposal went for a vote to council but the motion was defeated by a single vote. I have been asking for council to consider this proposal. The same group that brought this proposal to council four years ago would like to bring it forward again. We would like more parents to come out and support the reduced fares for students. Please free to contact me via email if you would like to support this initiative. The new Provincial Conservative government is seeking to make changes to education. As many of you are aware, the Parents Reaching Out (PRO) Grants are still on hold and the government has been having many consultations with parents via tele-conference about items such as the STEM, Sex Ed and Parental Bill of Rights. The government is now looking for input to change how they fund all services, including education. Trustees have been asked to provide input on reduced spending. Dufferin-Peel has run a very lean ship for many years. The Ministry of Education manages the spending for school boards, centrally, through the Grant for Student Needs (GSN) which means that 98% of the budget is earmarked to be spent as the Ministry of Education directs. School boards monitor and administer the spending and manage the day to
day operations. The funding formula used today is the same funding formula that was brought in by the Harris government in 1998. It is an inefficient model. It will be interesting to see what the new provincial government will do going forward. I will report more as we receive further information. This is the best time of year to be a Catholic
Trustee. We are invited to attend Advent
Masses, Christmas concerts, Virtues assemblies,
and so much more. Thank you to our Catholic
school councils, whose members often budget
to support Christmas events in our schools, and
also a big thanks to our teachers, who work long
hours to prepare the students for many of these
events.
As we move through the Advent season and
into Christmas, we are reminded that all of us
carry heavy burdens sometimes and more so for
some, especially at Christmas. Thank you to all
of our schools that do so much to support those
in need at this time of the year and always. We
are a community of faith and love.
“Come to me, all you that are weary and are
carrying heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me; for I
am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find
rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my
burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
Wishing each of you the joy and peace of this
Advent and Christmas season. We hope that you
have an opportunity for rest and to be with your
family. May God bless you and keep you safe in
the hollow of His hands.
