Using the Florida Document-Based Assessment Workbook
The Florida Document-Based Assessment workbook for Prentice Hall World History allows youto practice the skills that you need to act as a historian. Using a variety of practicematerials, you will read, evaluate, analyze, and interpret different kinds of written andvisual documents. You will apply critical thinking and other skills to a number ofdocuments and images that relate to major themes in world history.
Kinds of Practice MaterialsThe workbook contains four kinds of practice materials: skills practice worksheets,multiple-choice questions, constructed-response questions, and document-based questions. These practice materials include written and visual documents and various kinds ofquestions that may appear in standardized tests on world history. The best way to preparefor such tests is to practice.
Skills Practice WorksheetsThe first part of Florida Document-Based Assessment contains skills practice worksheets. Theworksheets cover social studies skills that you need to analyze written and visualdocuments.
Practice Test QuestionsNext, Florida Document-Based Assessment provides practice in the three types of questionsthat you may see on standardized tests on world history. Each unit of the workbookincludes multiple-choice questions, a constructed-response question, and a document-based question focusing on topics corresponding to Florida Prentice Hall World History.
Here are some tips to help you approach these kinds of questions:
How to Approach Multiple-Choice QuestionsStep 1: Read the question very carefully. Make sure you understand the question.Step 2: Read all four answer choices. Even if you think you know the correct answer,
check your choice. Reread the question and all the answer choices to make surethat you have not missed a key word in the question or answer.
Step 3: If you do not understand the question, read it again. If you still do not understandthe question, or if you are unsure of the correct answer, don't give up. Use theprocess of elimination to find the answer. Begin by rejecting any answer choicethat you know is wrong.
Step 4: Look for answer statements that do not relate to the question. To do so, reread thequestion. (Remember that sometimes an answer choice is true, but it does notrelate to the question.)
Step 5: Look for clue words in the answer choices. For example, be careful of an answer that uses words such as all, everyone, only, or completely. It can be wrongbecause it is too broad or too extreme. A correct answer might use words such asoften, generally, or at times.
FL 4
PH_WH_DBA_i_vi.qxd 4/13/11 9:30 PM Page FL 4
How to Approach Constructed-Response QuestionsIn this part of Florida Document-Based Assessment, you will work with what are calledconstructed-response questions. The questions are based on one or more written and visualdocuments. For example, a constructed-response question could be based on a reading or agraph. It could also be based on a graph and a reading, a graph and a map, or tworeadings.Step 1: Identify the subject and nature of the document(s) in the question.Step 2: Read through the three questions that follow the document(s).Step 3: Highlight, circle, or number the area of the document or image that helps you
answer the question. Then answer the questions in the order in which theyappear. Remember to refer to the information in the document(s) to answer thefirst two questions.
Step 4: Don't forget to use the skills you reviewed in the skills practice worksheets toanalyze the document(s).
How to Approach Document-Based QuestionsStep 1: Read the introduction to the activity. Read the essay question several times to
make sure that you fully understand it. Keep it in mind as you study thedocuments.
Step 2: Read or study each document. First, make sure that you understand what thedocument says or shows. Then, decide whether the document is a primary orsecondary source. How reliable do you think the information is? What is the pointof view of the person who created the document?
Step 3: Highlight, circle, or number the area of the document or image that helps youanswer the question.
Step 4: Answer the questions that follow the document.Step 5: After you have read all the documents, read the essay question again. Write down
one or two sentences that give your basic answer to the question.Step 6: Outline your essay. Think about how to use each document to support your idea.
You do not need to use every document.Step 7: Write your essay. Your essay should have three parts: (1) an introduction that
states your answer to the question; (2) a body that develops your answer andoffers evidence from the documents; and (3) a conclusion that restates youranswer. You should include specific historical details. Work to include commentson documents in your essay.
Step 8: Edit your essay. Read the essay, changing it as necessary to make your sentencesclear and effective and to correct errors in spelling and punctuation.

Skills Practice 1: SummarizeWhen you summarize a passage, you confirm your understanding ofthe text by restating the main points in your own words.
This skill will help you answer standardized test questions like the one near
the bottom of the page. Follow the numbered steps to apply the skill. Then
answer the question on the line provided after the last step.

Step 5 Choose the
best answer to the
question. Write your
answer choice here.
Step 4 Read the
question and test
each answer choice to
see whether it agrees
with what you think is
the overall meaning.
Then test it again
against the details in
the passage.
Step 3 Determine
what the details tell
you about the
subject. Write down
what stands out as
your overall meaning
of the passage.
Step 2 Identify
details about the
subject.
Step 1 Read the text.
Identify the subject. The Greek historian Thucydides wrote about the
Peloponnesian War between Athens and Sparta. In this
passage, Thucydides gives an account of a speech made in
430 B.C. by Pericles, a leading Athenian statesman, at a
funeral for Athenian soldiers killed in the war.
Pericles’ Funeral Oration
I doubt if the world can produce a man . . . graced by so
happy a versatility as the Athenian. And that this is no mere
boast thrown out for the occasion, but plain matter of fact,
the power of the state acquired by these habits proves. For
Athens alone of her contemporaries is found to be greater
than her reputation. . . . The admiration of the present and
succeeding ages will be ours, since we have not left our
power without witness, but have shown it by mighty proofs;
and far from needing a Homer . . . or other of his craft whose
verses might charm for the moment only for the impression
which they gave to melt away at the touch of fact, we have
forced every sea and land to be the highway of our daring,
and everywhere, whether for evil or for good, have left
imperishable monuments behind us.
—from The History of the Peloponnesian War
by Thucydides

Step 5 Choose the
best answer to the
question. Write your
answer choice here.
Skills Practice 2: Identify Main Ideas and DetailsWhen you identify the main idea of a passage, you determine what itis mostly about. Some main ideas are stated directly, but others areimplied. Supporting details in a passage also indicate the main idea. You must determine the main idea yourself by reading carefully.
This skill will help you answer standardized test questions like the one near
the bottom of the page. Follow the numbered steps to apply the skill. Then
answer the question on the line provided after the last step.
In the passage above, the writer describes Italy during theRenaissance, which began in the 1300s. Which statement belowbest expresses the main idea of this passage?
A Art played a role in every part of life in Italy during the Renaissance.
B Italian Renaissance artists tried to make ordinary objects beautiful.
C Art and architecture became overly ornate during the Renaissance.
D The Renaissance spread from Italy throughout Europe.

Step 4 Read the
question and test each
answer choice to see
whether it agrees with
what you think is the
main idea. Then test
the question and
answer choices again
against the details in
the passage.
Step 3 Write down
the main idea and
supporting details
here.
Step 2 Identify
details and decide
what overall main
idea they support.
Step 1 Read the text.
Identify the subject. The speech of the Italians [during the Renaissance], their
social habits, their manners, their standard of morality, the
estimate they formed of men, were alike conditioned and
qualified by art.… On the [most basic] articles of domestic
utility, [such as] cups and platters…and lids of linen-chests, a
wealth of artistic invention was lavished. [E]very Italian was
a judge of art. Art supplied the spiritual oxygen, without
which the life of the Renaissance must have been atrophied.
During that period[,] the entire nation seemed to be
endowed with an instinct for the beautiful, and with the
capacity for producing it in every conceivable form. [Today]
we still marvel at the incomparable and countless beauties
stored in every burgh and hamlet [and wonder] how could
Italy have done what she achieved within so short a space of
time? [To] explain this universal capacity for the fine arts in
the nation at this epoch, is perhaps impossible. Yet the fact
remains, that he who would comprehend the Italians of the
Renaissance must study their art…
