perplexer• A man who lives on the tenth floor takes

the elevator down to the first floor every morning and goes to work. In the evening, when he comes back; on a rainy day, or if there are other people in the elevator, he goes to his floor directly. Otherwise, he goes to the seventh floor and walks up three flights of stairs to his apartment. Can you explain why?

In the First Semester we will be learning

about:Ecology, Science safety and

tools, cells and the human body

Ecology UnitStudents will learn about• Biomes – large areas where similar plants,

and animals live (ie- desert)• Food chains and food webs• Consumers- herbivore, omnivore, carnivore,

decomposer, scavenger• Population Dynamics – how populations

change • Environmental Science

Mrs. Reding working with wildlife ecologists- tagging a brown thrasher

Cells UnitStudents will learn about• Cell Discovery and the History of the

microscope• Cell Structure – the parts of the cell• Cell Function – what all the parts do• Cell Division – how cells reproduce• Microscopes – the parts of the microscope

and how to use them

Human Body UnitStudents will learn about• The major systems of the human body• The main parts of each system• How the systems work together• How the human body relates to the cell

Students simulating the workings of a cell membrane

Comprehensive Final Exam

Covers all material from the past 18 weeks

10% of total grade

The Second Semester will include:

Genetics, Evolution, Classification,

The Kingdoms of Life, &Research Projects

Genetics UnitStudents will learn about• The history of genetics • Gregor Mendel’s experiments• Meiosis and DNA• Punnett Squares – how to predict the

outcome of a genetic cross• Dominant and recessive genes • Common genes in humans

Evolution UnitStudents will learn about• Charles Darwin’s historic voyage • Iguanas, tortoises, finches, and more!• Adaptations - characteristics that help an

organism survive• How genes affect the survival of a species

Some Activities:

“Extracting DNA”“Hemophilia and more”

“Fruit Fly Genetics”

Kingdoms of Life UnitStudents will learn about• The six main kingdoms of life

– Archeabacteria– Eubacteria– Protists – Fungi – Plants– Animals

• History of classification • Classification system for living things

Kingdoms of Life UnitStudents will also learn about• Dichotomous keys• Types of bacteria and their role in ecosystems• Types of protists and view living protists with

the microscope• Types of plants and how they reproduce• Fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and

mammals

Interactive Science Logs

• A great way to stay organized• Uses summary techniques to

promote higher level thinking and comprehension

• Ask your child to see it today!
