CTE Intern Project and Annual Goals
In General:
• Enhance communication about CTE and related programs. Increase promotion efforts (e.g. dual credit, clubs)…have “tools in hands” of counselors, parents, students.
Specific Focus:
• The KGHP Radio Broadcast Station
Some Concerns:
-Expensive program to run, numbers of students signing up for the class have decreased significantly, staff needed to run a quality station would require additional funding (“catch 22” situation)
-Our expert advisory member, a radio engineer, is needing to gradually back out….who will we have to replace him?
KGHP Radio Station 89.9 (main) 93.7 (new translator)
- Launched in 1988
- Moved to an automated system in 2003
- 9 other high school radio stations in the state
- Articulated with PC3
- Some students go on to WSU’s program
- Funded by program 81 funds (facilities) and program 31 (class)
Progress
• Collected Examples of bylaws for two foundations that support CTE programs: West Sound Skills Center, and Clark County Skills Center
• Met with the dean and instructor at Clover Park Technical College to ask questions about the management of their radio station.
• Obtained the manual that Nathan Hale uses for the students of their radio station
• Drafted “Performance Goals” to outline expectations and job responsibilities for station manager.
• Met with counseling dept to encourage promotion of program
Next Steps
- Foundation…whether to develop one…or not.
- School board policy….do we need one?
- Replacement cycle for automated system, software and technical support. What funds pay for this?
- Do I need to pursue a grant?
- Planning for continuing advisory support, and expertise.
- Examine, plan, and set aside resources…increase staffing support?
