EX Scanner
Why a new EX platform
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Customer’s needs for different combinations of technologies and bands, due to new E-UTRA bands definitions and the simultaneous support of 2G/3G/4G overlay networks, is increasing.
• Flexibility is key for integrating multiple technologies and bands (uplinks and downlinks) into a single receiver
– Field upgrades for both bands and technologies in many situation is critical.
– OEMs can inventory the scanner and load the required bands and technologies as/when needed.
• A clear migratory path to emerging and tomorrow's technologies and new or re-farmed frequency bands, must be understood and easily achieved (i.e. LTE Advanced).
SeeGull EXflex Overview
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• The next step in the evolution of the PCTEL EX platform – provides
the flexibility operators need to adapt to increasing network complexity.
• Support for the predominate technologies utilized by carriers today
– TD-LTE, LTE(FDD), WCDMA, GSM, CDMA, EV-DO, TD-SCDMA
• Supports for any cellular band between 150 MHz to 6 GHz
• Advanced scanning capabilities with low power consumption
(17W typical, 21W Max.)
– High Dynamic Range, – Fast scan speeds for greater data density, – GSM/WCDMA/LTE (FDD and TDD) Layer 3 information. – Blind Scan for all technologies
• Support for Wideband spectrum analysis
– 150 MHz to 6 GHz, – Test signal power of WiFI or Public Safety networks.
EXflex Provides maximum flexibility for adding future bands and technologies.
EX Mini Price consideration, supports up to 2 bands, with up to three technologies (LTE/CDMA/EV-DO). Single technology supported for LTE, WCDMA or GSM.
EX Supports up to 4 bands and up to three technologies (LTE/CDMA/EV-DO). Single technology supported for LTE, dual technology for WCDMA/GSM. Supports MIMO.
EX+ Supports up to 6 bands and typically configured with 3 technologies. Normally sold as an upgrade to existing SeeGull EXs. Provides better scanning speed in some cases. Supports MIMO.

Competitve Analysis
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Provide complete picture of the network’s RF landscape
• Identifying and resolving network issues
• Beneficial applications through all the phases of the network life cycle.
• Thorough benchmarking of one or more networks
Benefit of Scanners for drive testing
UE’s find issues, Scanners resolve
them!!
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Costly Redrives : Drive testing is inherently expensive. Poor performing testing equipment cause costly and time consuming redrives.
Costs of choosing a wrong scanner
• Multiple Scanners: Like performance often requires running multiple inferior scanners to match PCTEL capabilities.
• Inaccurate Data: Questionable performance and inaccurate data in real life conditions will miss critical problems and is useless.
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
Comparative Analysis – Competitor A
• LTE : Slow speed, incomplete bandwidth scanning, lower dynamic range and erroneous measurements in multipath scenario.
• WCDMA : Significantly decreased scan speed with increased pilots, less pilot detection in over the air testing and lower detection rate with decreased Ec\Io values.
• GSM: Slow speed, lower channel detection rate, poor sensitivity to co-channel and adjacent channel interference detection.
• Multi-technology : Further reduced scan speed amplifies problems in multi-technology environment.
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Competitor A LTE scan speed is at least 1/3 less than MX. Competitor A lower measurement speed increases risk of missing transient but disruptive behavior.
• Competitor A only scans the center 6 RB’s instead of complete
bandwidth
• Competitor A does not report CINR values below -8 dB, over estimates above 26 dB. MX is linear through -20 to 40 dB.
Competitor A Comparative Analysis – LTE
Inaccurate detection at low CINR values, signifies lowered ability to detect interference and complete profile for every sector
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Static Multipath: Competitor A exhibits 100% variance in value of CINR measurements in static multipath conditions poor accuracy causes inability to identify problems.

Confidence in multipath measurement High High None Low
The MX has consistent RS_CINR and RS_RP associated with the
second path.
Huge variation in measured values with Competitor A, little confidence
in either measurements.
SINR is set to 40 dB, and the delay and phase angle of the second path are varied.
Accurate Multipath measurements are critical for LTE throughput optimization especially with MIMO .
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Fading Multipath: Competitor A cannot track slow or fast fading multipath.
Competitor A Comparative Analysis – LTE
Inability to report accurate measurements in both static and fading multipath, leads to erroneous and unreliable CINR and RSRP values and inaccurate RF
profiles for sectors.
Competitor A, the effects of
fading show
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
Competitor A Comparative Analysis – WCDMA
• Competitor A WCDMA scan speed significantly reduces with increasing number of pilots when compared against MX
MX Scan Speed Advantage
Under typical real network environments, with pilot counts of 15-20, the scan speed of the Competitor A would become unusable in terms of adequate data representation.
1 Pilot 2.2x Competitor A
5 Pilots 2.8x Competitor A
16 Pilots 1.6x Competitor A
PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
Competitor A Comparative Analysis – WCDMA
• Competitor A WCDMA detection ability begins to drop quickly below -14dB and falls to 50% at -20dB, compared to MX/EX’s accurate detection up to -28 dB and -26 dB
• In over the air WCDMA testing, MX detects 64% more pilots than Competitor A.
Scan Speed Avg. Number
of Pilots
MX 15.1 scans/sec 66 ms/scan 18
Competitor A 14.3 scans/sec 70 ms/scan 11
Accurately detecting all transmitting pilot in any region is necessary to identify and resolve Pilot
pollution issues PCTEL Confidential - Ascom
• Competitor A reports 20% less channels and detected
50% less BSICs in actual drive tests.
• Competitor A is 40% less sensitivity to co-channel
interference, and
• Competitor A is 500% less sensitivity to adjacent channel
interference
Competitor A Comparative Analysis – GSM
Lower detection rates combined with less sensitivity results to more drive test costs without the ability to accurately identify interference.

Comparative Analysis – Competitor R
• LTE : Very slow scan speed compared to the MX, incomplete bandwidth scanning, reduced on higher end and erroneous power measurements in multipath scenario.
• WCDMA : Decreasing scan speed with increasing pilots, less pilot detection in over the air testing and Ec/Io detection stops at -25 dB.
• Multi-technology : Further reduced scan speed amplifies problems in multi-technology environment.
