FOR THE DEVELOPING STUDENTCOMPILED AND EDITED

BY DANIEL SCHMIDT

Little is known about Paul DeVille other than the fact that he wrote one of the seminaltexts for the teaching of Saxophone which has been the standard for almost 100 years. It is interesting to note that the Universal Method was part of a larger series of books byDeVille. The Universal Method series included pedagogical methods for Flute, Clari-net, Harp, Saxophone, Cornet, Trombone, Sarrusophone and Xylophone all published by CarlFischer. The Saxophone method is the only method in the Universal Method series that remainsin print.

Daniel Schmidt is director of bands and professor of saxophone at Mars Hill College, just outside of Asheville, N.C. He is highly regarded as a woodwind pedagogue and hasperformed professionally on flute, clarinet and saxophone. Danny is a student of PatrickMeighan, Eric Nestler, James Riggs and Sigurd Rascher and holds degrees from theFlorida State University, the University of North Texas, and the University of Kentucky.Dr. Schmidt is a clinician for the Yamaha Corporation of America.
