The parents and future fresh-
men of the class of 2015 gath-
ered for a night of informa-
tion from administrators,
counselors, teachers, spon-
sors, and coaches. The annual
event occurred on Thursday, January 13, along with our other eight dis-
trict schools. According to Mr. Kleiser, we hosted a larger number of stu-
dents and parents compared to previous years. Above, the gym was obvi-
ously packed with the class of 2015 gathering
information about the sports programs offered
on campus and talking to various coaches. Ad-
ditionally, the enthusiasm of the current stu-
dents and the energy was inspiring indeed.
Current Glendale students assisted in answer-
ing questions and several students (Link Crew leaders) provided tours
around campus highlighting many of the programs now available to stu-
dents. The tour included stops in the Choir room, the Media Center, as
well as the new Culinary Arts building. Those who missed Future Fresh-
men Night are encouraged to contact the front office as soon as possible
to get more information about becoming a Glendale Cardinal next year
and getting involved in the many programs available on campus.

The new Culinary Arts building celebrated its grand opening
with a ribbon cutting ceremony in January. The dedication
hosted an array of people including GUHSD Board Members:
Vicki Johnson and Ian Hugh, in addition to GUHSD Superin-
tendent, Jennifer Johnson and other district representatives.
Principal, Deborah Jordan, spoke in regards to the process
that made the building possible and the hard work and dedi-
cation on everyone’s part that allowed the building to become
a reality. Alongside of West MEC (Maricopa Education Cen-
ter) and Glendale High School, the building was constructed
to be utilized by the students and provide a gateway to the
field of Culinary Arts and also as a means to reach the com-
munity at large. The enthusiasm for the possibilities were ex-
pressed by the Jennifer Johnson (GUHSD Superintendent),
Deborah Jordan (GHS Principal), and Gregory J. Donovan
the Superintendent of West MEC who was joined by Dean Pe-
terson also of West MEC. In addition to the actual ribbon cut-
ting ceremony, attendees were able to tour the facility which
houses a state-of-the-art fully-equipped kitchen, dishwashing
area, food storage and serving areas, as well as a demo
kitchen/classroom and an additional classroom. Chef Morris,
the Culinary Arts instructor, along with students from the
culinary classes prepared hors d'oeuvres for their guests to
enjoy. A member of the Culinary Club, Aaron Fourtner, also
had the opportunity to join in the ribbon
cutting ceremony marking this monumen-
tal event in Glendale’s history. Also, in at-
tendance were community members Mr.
Heatwole, former teacher and Principal of
Glendale, and the Mayor of Glendale,
Elaine Scruggs.

Art students from Ms. Zeoli’s Art 3-4 class hosted an
art showcase in the “Y” during both lunches to dis-
play their pieces. The event titled, “Art in the Why,”
and is a new venue for students showcasing the art-
work of our local
student artists. The
pieces were ab-
stracted representa-
tions of the stu-
dent’s “World View”
and included a small
message to explain
their interpretation.

GUHSD is strongly committed to Affirmative Action and Equal Opportunity and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, nation of origin, age, veteran status, disability, marital status, or sex-ual orientation in any of its programs or activities.
In December 2010, GUHSD’s Governing Board approved the formation of a Revenue Generating Committee. The committee, made up of parents, community members, principals, assistant principals, teachers, support staff employees and students, gath-ered in early February 2011 where the current state of GUHSD’s budget was shared. The committee was also given the charge to research and bring forth a recommenda-tion to the board regarding the need to go for a district bond to address facility’s needs. As a part of their process, the committee will be conducting three community forums to gather input and study the facility needs of the district. GUHSD needs input from their communities. Please plan to attend an upcom-ing budget presentation meeting and join in the discussion regarding aging facilities and the plans for the future of both these facilities.

Clubs on campus joined together to decorate trees and fill the community with much needed Christ-mas spirit. The students along with their sponsors gathered to decorate the trees after school prior to student council hosting the annual event for the families. The night of giv-
ing to the community families was filled with a traditional Christmas dinner prepared by the Culinary Arts depart-ment under the guidance of Chef Shawn Morris, Christ-mas carols and various others songs per-formed by members of the choir directed by Amanda Estes, and the opportunity for the children to visit Santa and receive a special gift. The
families re-ceived the do-nated trees and decora-tions to adorn their homes with Christ-mas cheer.
