annualreport

2012–2013

“As parents facing a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder, we were so worried for our child. From professionals to parents, everyone we spoke to offered the highest recommendations for ABC of NC, and they couldn’t have been more right!”

“It was an absolute joy to have our daughter attend ABC of NC’s Summer Education Program, especially after a challenging first year in public school. Even with the help of financial aid it took a lot for us to get her there but it has been worth every bit of the expense. She thoroughly enjoyed the eight-week summer program. She made great progress and met, and even exceeded, many of the goals set for her. We are excited that she will continue into the next school year as a student at ABC of NC.”

“Jack had his first soccer practice yesterday and did awesome! When he was first diagnosed with autism, I never thought we would get to experience moments like this with him. I truly attribute much of his success to ABC of NC. Thank you all so much!”

Growth. We all want our children to develop, learn, achieve and flourish.

But when a child has autism, families must fight harder for progress, especially in language, social and behavioral skills. ABC of NC Child Development Center is here to help with its vision of all children with autism spectrum disorders reaching their full potential through effective diagnosis, therapeutic and educational services.

We celebrate our growth with this annual report and highlight another year of seeking funding so that we can provide quality individualized, evidence-based services to families from any economic background.

ABC of NC grew in almost every way possible in the last year and we could not have done it without you, our generous donors. Here are just a few of the top achievements:

■■ Hiring Dr. Kelly O’Laughlin as our staff psychologist who opened our Autism Clinic in late 2013, providing new diagnostic and therapeutic services

■■ Helping a record number of children through our school and community-based service offerings

■■ Awarding financial aid to 35 families in 2013, the most ever for our organization

■■ Introducing our collaborative autism para professional class at Forsyth Technical Community College, helping to provide better trained autism workers for our communities

■■ Adding collaborations with school systems and autism service providers

■■ Securing a new grant from Reynolds American for teacher training in our surrounding public school districts

■■ Traveling overseas for the third year with Knowledge for People, providing autism training and supplies to under-served families in The Maldives

Autism advocate and 2013 Gourmet Lunchbox Lunch speaker Dr. Maya Angelou said, “You may not control all the events that happen to you, but you can decide not to be reduced by them.” We believe that this characterizes our families at ABC of NC—a group that may not have chosen the world of autism, but continues to thrive within it.

On behalf of these brave families and our wonderful staff, thank you for helping us improve, prosper and grow.

ABC of NC has provided $1,375,190 in financial aid to families over the last five years.

Andy* was a good baby and seemed to be reaching some, but not all, of his developmental milestones. We didn’t realize how very different he was from his peers until he

was enrolled in a typical preschool. At first it was just little things, but then his behavior became so severe the preschool asked us not to return until he had a formal assessment. When it revealed that Andy had autism, we were at a loss.

We allowed ourselves to feel sorry for ourselves briefly and then set about figuring out what to do next. Our search led us to ABC of NC for guidance. Like many children with autism, Andy couldn’t express his wants, needs, and feelings. He would become extremely frustrated—it was common for him to engage in self-injurious and aggressive behaviors as a means to communicate. ABC of NC taught us that our first priority was to develop Andy’s communication skills so he could put words to these powerful feelings.

After a couple of years of intensive therapies, Andy’s language had blossomed, and he was able to transition into a typical Kindergarten setting. He flourished! Today he is in the seventh grade at a neighborhood school. He is bright, funny, and creative. He has developed close friendships, and gotten the opportunity to explore his passions and interests, like cooking. He has enjoyed participating in ABC of NC’s Buddy Club (social skills group), and we continue to receive consultative services. The road hasn’t been without its bumps, but ABC of NC has remained a constant support in our lives for more than ten years—growing up right alongside Andy.

*Name changed for confidentiality

Autism is the fastest-growing serious developmental disability in the U.S. and costs the nation over $137 billion per year.

Autism receives less than 5% of the research funding of many less prevalent childhood diseases.
