What is PARCC?

▪ The Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers

▪ Innovative 21st century, technology-based assessments

▪ The PARCC assessments are directly aligned to the Common Core State Standards

▪ Content will include English Language Arts and Mathematics

▪ Provide educators valuable data throughout the year for accountability, measures of growth, and to inform instruction

What are we doing to prepare our students?

▪ Aligning curriculum – common core (3 years), K-5 ELA and Math

▪ Instructing Students– Benchmark Assessments– Keyboarding Without Tears– Study Island

▪ PARCC Video Tutorials and Practice Tests

▪ Teachers familiarize students with the types of questions they will encounter on the PARCC

▪ Ongoing professional development for teachers and administrators

What is Hamilton Township School District doing to prepare for PARCC?

The administrative team created a committee to prepare for the PARCC assessment:

▪ Conducted ongoing trainings and workshops for teachers and administrators beginning last year

▪ Field testing as a pilot school district for PARCC administration

▪ Purchasing hardware and software: Laptops, Mice, Headphones, Laptop carts

▪ Preparing the infrastructure: wireless campus, bandwidth

PARCC Design

▪ PARCC assesses two formal times during the school year: 75% and 90%

▪ Performance Based Assessments (PBA)

▪ End of Year Assessments (EOY)

▪ Scoring – 5 Levels of performance: Level 1 represents lowest performing and Level 5 represents highest performing

▪ Different from NJASK in that PARCC is an online assessment and is given during two testing windows

PARCC Lingo

▪ Prose Constructed Response (PCR)–Writing Task (write about reading, narratives,

research)

▪ Technology Enhanced Constructed Response (TECR)–Drag & drop, select/deselect, highlight

▪ Evidence Based Selected Response (EBSR)–Multiple Choice

Differences: March vs. May

March (PBA) - 75% through the year

May (EOY) - 90% through the year

Mathreasoning and modeling

questions require both short &extended responses(explanations - why is this wrong?)

How can I help my child?

▪ Relax and stay positive…if you seem nervous, they will notice and may become nervous too

▪ Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep

▪ Each testing morning, provide a good healthy and hearty breakfast for your child

▪ Make sure they are wearing comfortable clothes that will not leave them too hot or cold

▪ Encourage them to their best…that is all they can do!
