POWER PARAGRAPH

Paragraphs are clusters of sentences that make up a composition.

There is no specific length for a paragraph, but most paragraphs seem to be between five to ten sentences long.

In some special instances like journalistic writing or narrative writing a paragraph can be just  a sentence.

WHAT IS A PARAGRAPH?

Let’s look at 1234 in action.

Although I have several hobbies, fishing is my most             enjoyable   leisure – time. When I am fishing, this is the  time I feel closest to the natural elements. The sunrise, the quiet stream or lake, and the one – on – one experience with nature relax me more than any other activity. I am convinced that fishing will always be a positive experience for me.

Although I have several hobbies, fishing is my most enjoyable leisure – time. When I am fishing, this is the time I feel closest to the natural elements. The sunrise, the quiet stream or lake, and the one – on – one experience with nature relax me more than any other activity. In this peaceful scene, there is also the thrill of conquering a bit of the wilderness. For years, I will remember the seven big trout I caught on a fishing trip several years ago. I am convinced that fishing will always be a positive experience for me.

REMEMBER: YOU CAN HAVE AS MANY 2 3 AS YOU WISH IN A PARAGRAPH.

Two purposes in writing the introductory paragraph: • States the theme (reason for writing/ message to

convey)• Lets the reader know what to expect from the

essay/writing piece Needs to be interesting and capture the interest of the reader so that they want to keep reading.

INTRODUCTORY PARAGRAPH

There are a few ways to start a composition:

Ask a question and provide an answer.Use newspaper headlinesUse dialogue or direct speechGive an opinionRelate a story or an anecdoteGive a quotation, proverb or an idiomGive a definition of a topic or state a fact

about the topic.

A QUESTION AND ANSWER

What is the major cause of fires in Malaysia? Contrary to what most people think, the major cause of fires is neither short circuit nor lightning. The majority of fires in Malaysia is due to negligence or arson.

NEWSPAPER HEADLINES

Kampung Permai fire leaves 80 homelessPaper products go up in smokeThree family members die in a fireNewspaper headlines such as these appear so

frequently in our local dailies that they no longer fail to catch the attention of the readers. In fact, it will not be too far – fetched to say that there is at least one major fire in the country every month.

DIALOGUE

“Fire! Fire! Get out of this building and run for your life,” someone shouted. His shouts of warning were drowned in a frenzy of panic stricken screams. Immediately, there was a patter of hurried footsteps as people rushed to the emergency exit.

OPINION

People, generally, do not give priority to fire prevention methods at home or at work unless and until a fire breaks out. By then, it may be too late. A few lives may have been lost by then. Valuables and property may have gone up in smoke. Then, comes the realization that fires can indeed cause a lot of destruction.

A STORY OR ANECDOTE

It was on the second day of Hari Raya. The women folk of En. Azizan’s household were busy clearing the dishes after dinner. The men were talking in the verandah while the children were playing with fireworks in the compound. Suddenly, there was the smell of something burning. “Fire!” someone shouted.

QUOTATION, PROVERB OR IDIOM

“Fire is a good servant but a bad master.” If only people realized the truth of the statement. It will certainly make more people careful if they knew the destructive effects of fire on lives and property.

FACT

The forest fires that occurred in Kalimantan, Indonesia was an eye opener in many ways. In the first place, the fires were a grim reminder of what the environment of the future would be like if collective efforts are not taken to tackle the problem. Secondly, the fires brought about the haze and a host of other health – related problems which made Malaysians aware of the dangers of uncontrolled fires and open – burning.

Conclusions are often the most difficult part of an essay to write, and many writers feel that they have nothing left to say after having written the paper. A writer needs to keep in mind that the conclusion is often what a reader remembers best. Your conclusion should be the best part of your paper.

CONCLUDING PARAGRAPH

stress the importance of the thesis statement,

give the essay a sense of completeness, and

leave a final impression on the reader.

A conclusion should:

Bring the story to a climax

Write a summary of what you have already discussed in the body of your composition.

Repeat your theme

Predict an outcome based on the facts provided

SUGGESTIONS

Do not begin with an unnecessary, overused phrase such as "in conclusion," "in summary," or "in closing." Although these phrases can work in speeches, they come across as awkward in writing.

Do not state the thesis for the very first time in the conclusion.

Do not introduce a new idea or subtopic in your conclusion.

Do not make sentimental, emotional appeals that are out of character with the rest of an expository paper. Your opinion needs to match what you said in the introduction and tried to convey throughout the paper

Do not include evidence (quotations, statistics, etc.) that should be in the body of the paper. Quotes should finalize your thoughts and statistics should be used to prove your point in your detail sentences.
