Papua New Guinea is Australia’s closest
international neighbour and as a single
country can boast the most diverse set of
cultures, scenery and activities available
anywhere in the world. PNG Holidays
presents a showcase of packages from
these diverse cultures, idyllic scenery
and amazing activities just waiting to be
experienced.
In Papua New Guinea you will experience
their traditional cultures that have been
kept alive through the incredible and
difficult topography making so many
areas remote and only accessible by
plane. There are no roads connecting
many of the far off and wonderful
destinations. The largely Melanesian
cultures still actively hold their feasts
and ceremonies using wigs, shells, body
painting and headdresses. Sing-sings are
vibrant and spectacular.
PNG Cultures are extremely different
according to their region. They range
from The Highlands which are high up
in the mountains amongst many Birds
of Paradise and pristine rainforest
waterfalls, to coastal and island villages
where they travel by outrigger canoe in
sparkling diamond clear waters.
All of Papua New Guinea is a delightful
bounty of pristine nature, largely
untouched and undiscovered by the rest
of the world. We invite you to explore
this wonderful land and encourage
respect and understanding of Papua
New Guinea Culture and Nature for a
sustainable future.
In a world where there is nothing new... PNG Holidays opens the gates to a forgotten place... Where time stands still and beauty remains unchanged...

Travelling hintsTIME The whole of PNG is GMT+10, however, when people mention ‘PNG TIME’ or ‘Melanesian Time’ this equates to a relaxed view to timings and schedules, similar to ‘Pacific Time’ which is evident on most Pacific islands.
TIPS are not expected at resorts but always appreciated. A kind word is always welcomed.
CURRENCY is in Kina (notes) - pronounce as ‘kee-na’ and Toea (coins) - pronounce as ‘toy-ya’. It is based on the decimal system similar to Australia.
MOBLE PHONES are widely used and there are two main carriers: Telikom and Digicel. Both offer local prepaid phone cards which you can setup to use in your mobile phone. These can be obtained upon arrival at the main airports.
HEALTH RISKS: Malaria - It is wise to bring insect repellent of your choice and consult your doctor for anti-malarial preparation.
BANKS are not easily accessible so it is best to exchange some money prior to entering PNG. Some Australian debit cards can be used in the local ATMs to withdraw local currency.
CREDIT CARDS are accepted at major hotels.

Papua New Guinea is located in the coral triangle of marine biodiversity with the highest diversity of tropical fish and coral in the world. PNG occupies the eastern portion of the island of New Guinea, the second largest island in the world. Situated directly north of Australia, it consists of a mainland with some 600 islands, of which New Britain, New Ireland and Bougainville are the largest.
PNG is recognised internationally as one of the best dive locations in the world, with twice as many marine species as the waters of the Red Sea and up to ten times as many as the Caribbean. It has become known as the ‘under-water photographer’s paradise’ with many international award-winning photos being taken in PNG waters.
The country is surrounded by the Bismarck, Coral and Solomon seas whose constant movements feed and enrich the marine environment. With 17,000 km of coastline and 45,000 sq kms of reef systems, divers can enjoy minimal contact with other dive groups. The immense diversity of sites include barrier reefs, coral walls, coral gardens, patch reefs, fringing reefs, sea grass beds, coral atolls and wrecks.
All dive operators offer dive instruction, scuba gear hire and a range of other services, with Nitrox offered by most operators. Diving is possible all year round, the optimal season is generally from mid-April to mid-June and from mid-September to mid-December. Water temperature ranges from 26°C along the edge of the Coral Sea and up to 31°C in the Bismarck Sea, with visibility from 50 to 150 feet.
PNG has its own hyperbaric recompression facility located in Port Moresby. The facility is situated within a private hospital and is operated and maintained to international standards by Hyperbaric Health Australia.

MADANG RESORT
The warm, fertile waters that surge through the many passages and channels in the barrier reef around Madang make the ideal environment for a vast range of marine life. Marine Biologists from all over the world make pilgrimages to the Madang waters to study their wonders. For sheer colour and diversity of life, the seas around Madang have no rival. Although you can enjoy world-class diving only minutes from the Madang Resort, the best spots are a little more remote and require more effort to get to. The extent and diversity of Madang’s marine environment is legendary amongst biologists, photographers and sport divers alike. The sheer volume of fish and coral life that engulfs the extensive barrier reef encircling the Madang area is unique - so unique that many species remain to be catalogued. Undoubtedly, the most exciting destination is Bagabag Island, lying 32 nautical miles off the coast. This small island has several excellent harbours that were put to good use by the Japanese Navy during WWII. The island’s close neighbour, Karkar, is still an active volcano. The other peaks remain underwater, sheer pinnacles that spear from thousands of feet to within 15 feet of the surface - being so far from the mainland there are no estuaries too muddy or soil the crystal clear waters.

Heavy game fishing from Port Moresby generally involves travelling out wider from the coast circa 15-40 nautical miles. This enables access to the first and second shelves where the chances of billfish activity (Blue and black marlin) are greater. Other fish species targeted include Yellow Fin Tuna, Wahoo and Mahi Mahi. Onboard Catalinnah, fishing tackle and gear are all state of the art and brand new Shimano Tiagra reels (15KG-37KG) and Shimano backbone rods.
Port Moresby’s reefs are hidden gems and produce fantastic opportunities to bottom fish and heavy and light game fishing. Only 45 minutes out from Fairfax harbour, are a myriad of submerged reefs. Combining the run off from the Owen Stanley Ranges and the strong currents along the Papuan Coastline and the continental shelf, these waters produce big game and much of it.
There are a variety of vessels available in Port Moresby that are available for charter, catering for all types of anglers (from beginners to the experienced) and all group sizes. If you are transiting through Port Moresby for a day or two, whether it be a business trip or recently completed the Kokoda Track, it is worthwhile getting out on the water and having a fish. All boats have all the latest safety equipment on board.
These charters also offer other techniques like jigging and popping with targets that include Giant Trevally, Mackerel and other reef species.

PNG is a surf rich country during the surf season but you need to get out there to discover and enjoy it. The New Ireland region directly around Kavieng has seven or so reef breaks, travelling down the New Ireland’s east and central coasts you also have an abundance of rarely surfed breaks, whilst the outer islands off New Ireland offer the same qulaity waves and variety of breaks as any surf destination worldwide, which means consistently good surfing conditions. The St Matthias group of islands, Manus Island, New Hanover and the inner islands around the New Britain Province are still raw and full of discoveries waiting to happen. Surfers have access to a variety of rights and lefts that are generally in the vicinity of 3’-5’ but occasionally peak at around the 6’ mark which can at times test your abilities. The northerly swell season runs from around October to May producing some world-class breaks that can be surfed on any tide. The surf is generally not as powerful as other regions in the world but you can certainly get sizeable, challenging and even shallow breaking waves depending on your choice of reef break.

Set in complete privacy on 180 acres, Rubio Plantation Retreat is three hours south of Kavieng. With at least twenty breaks within close proximity, there are breaks to suit all levels of surf experience. The bungalows are made from native materials and are located along the beachfront; all beds have mosquito nets and the experienced and friendly staff will take care of all your needs. Solar panels and hydroelectric provide power for the retreat. There are flush toilets and showers in our deluxe and family bungalows and also in the toilet block.
RUBIO PLANTATION RETREAT
Located on Tunning Island, Clem’s Place is approximately a 3 hour boat ride from Kavieng. Five eco bungalows line the island in view of the large lagoon and maximum capacity is 10 guests. Each bungalow is placed strategically to view the surf directly out front and away from the heat of the midday sun. The island is covered by trees and vegetation and lined with tropical palms and coconuts trees that ensures you will enjoy cool nights and tropical breezes. The waves found in this area are made up of a variety of left and right handers which range from cruising hotdog waves to pitching peaks to long playful walls.
CLEM’S PLACE
Accommodation: Retreat
This private island is 20 minutes from Kavieng. With a capacity of 14 guests, it ensures privacy and secluded surf spots are guaranteed. Special agreements with the resource owners ensure that all breaks can be surfed at any time. The level of difficulty varies, depending on the size of the swell and the direction. Lissenung is close to some well known surf spots, such as Ral and Senta Pass, as well as newer breaks at Bangatan, Nusalomon and Lemus Islands. Ral is in their backyard! Their local guides will ensure that you get out there, to experience the best tropical reef surfing in uncrowded surroundings.
LISSENUNG ISLAND RESORT
Accommodation: Resort
Nusa Island Retreat is located just five minutes from Kavieng in the province of New Ireland. It has eco-friendly bungalows on the water’s edge, ensuring great views and cool seabreezes in the evening. For surfers looking for somewhere less crowded, New Ireland Province is an unspoilt playground with an excellent variety of breaks.
Nusa Island Retreat operates 6 long boats to access the breaks, and surfers need to prepay Surf Transfers for the duration of their stay. This transfer fee allows unlimited boat access to all of the breaks within the Management Plan area. There are no set transfer times, as we have boat drivers ready to take you surfing when you want to go surfing. Obviously, we try and spread groups around the different breaks, rather than piling you all onto the one peak, but essentially you choose where you want to surf. The boat and driver stay with you at the break for the entire period that you are in the water and will take you back to the retreat when you are ready.

The Kokoda Track was the scene of bitter fighting in 1942 as the Japanese advanced towards Port Moresby. Many Japanese and Australian soldiers died along the Track, both in battle and from malaria. As the interest in Australia’s cultural identity and recent history grows, walking the Kokoda Track has become a rite of passage for a new generation of Australians. Gain an understanding of what Australian soldiers endured during WWII.
Trekking Adventures
Our expedition will fly to the Track’s namesake, Kokoda, where we will see and feel what went on in this small village. From there we will trek to Deniki that overlooks the Yodda Valley and down to Kokoda village itself. The trek continues to Isurava where we will spend the night before returning to Kokoda the same way. This expedition gives those that have limited time or fitness an opportunity to see what the Kokoda Track is all about.

The Black Cat Trail runs between Salamaua and Wau in the Morobe Province. It is a forgotten WWII trail that passes through some of the toughest and most hazardous terrain in the world. Australian Diggers have often been heard describing the Black Cat Trail as the ‘hardest slog they’d ever done’. In fact the Black Cat Trail rates harder than the Kokoda Track. It includes dangerous river crossings, swamps, cliffs, trees that are fallen, moss covered rocks and dangerous ledges. This makes the Black Cat Trail one of the toughest tracks in PNG and in the world. It is recommended only for very fit and experienced trekker.

Near Rabaul, this track is a reminder of the little known yet significant experiences of an Australian military unit in WWII, known as the Lark Force. The Lark Force totalling 1200 men, the majority of whom was the 2/22nd Battalion who were sent to defend Rabaul against a Japanese invasion. Lark Force were forced out of Rabaul on 23rd January 1942 and informed by Australian authorities that there was to be no reinforcement, no further support and no evacuation. The current beauty and ruggedness of this 60km track belies the horrors, struggles and bravery of those who fled on this track in WWII. The Lark Force Track presents an adventure into unsurpassed environmental beauty, diverse cultural experiences, history and personal challenges.

FISHERMANS ISLANDLocated only 30 kilometres from Fairfax Harbour is a lovely sparsely inhabited island with white sandy beaches and an abundance of sealife. Fishing and snorkelling are a great way to explore the island’s seashore and you will find an amazing array of starfish and sea urchins. There is very little cover or shade on the island nor are there any shops or facilities. You would be exploring the island in its own natural beauty.
