Foreword

Pakistan Gender Coalition

I am delighted to welcome Pakistan Gender Coalition (PGC) members to the first meeting of

the Coalition after its launch on July 16, 2012.

Coalitions are effective mechanisms for collective action and weenvisage that the PGC will

have acceptance, credibility and an impact created out of the combined strength of its

members.

We envision that PGC willinculcate anew the spirit of volunteerism amongst its members. The

enthusiastic participation of PGC members in the '16 Days of Activism to end Violence Against

Women'2012 global campaignillustrates PGC members' commitment.

The Coalition's first meeting being held this month will thrash out how it will take cumulative

action towards women's empowerment. The PGC will not only meet annually at the national

levelbut provincial meetings will also be held.

This dynamic and vibrant force will strengthen the member organizations. It promises to

become the first point of contact for anyone working towards ensuring that all citizens of

Pakistan are treated as equal and have the right to feel secure in their homes and in the public

domain.

Background

The Pakistan Gender Coalition (PGC) is envisaged as a network of Pakistani civil

society organizations, academic institutions, research institutions and media

organizations that have a commitment to working towards gender equality and equity;

and that are former and current sub-grantees of the Gender Equity Program (GEP).

Future sub-grantees will become PGC members when they come on board.

The Pakistan Gender Coalition is the custodian of the mission and objectives of GEP,

working together and bringing to bear the experience and resources of the member

organizations to strive towards a Pakistani society that is just, democratic, and gender-

responsive – a society that itself calls for and guarantees equal rights for women and

women.

The Coalition is also a way to sustain the government-NGO linkages being built by GEP

and for strengthening the interface between academia, research, media and practice to

give more prominence to the gender agenda and women's rights that has, hitherto,

been largely the life-work of a number of NGOs.

Aurat Foundation's values of caring and sharing and principles of participatory

democracy and development, transparency and accountability nurtured over 25 years of

activism and institutional development at all levels (from grassroots to policy and

legislation), will be the bedrock of the Coalition. PGC members will share best practices,

novel actions, lessons learnt, difficulties and solutions, strengthening the synergy that is

a hallmark of GEP.
