Gold Fever
One of the most exciting events in the history of North America was the California Gold Rush. Before the discovery of gold in California, few people lived there. Most of those who did farmed or ranched. The only communities of any size were along the coast. That is where a few traders set up shop to provide wood, water, and supplies for ships that stopped there. However, a new California was coming. One man's accidental discovery changed California almost overnight.
The man who made that discovery was James Marshall. He was a carpenter who went to work for a rich landowner named John Sutter. Sutter owned most of the Sacramento Valley. On his land, there was a fort and many homes and shops. Sutter wanted to build even more. He asked Marshall to set up a sawmill to cut lumber for building. Marshall left Sutter's Fort and looked along the American River until he found a good spot for a sawmill. It was about forty-five miles northeast of Sutter's Fort. They later named this spot Sutter's Mill.
Slowly, gold fever died down, but the Gold Rush had changed California forever. So many people had come to California that it was made a state. Only the large mining companies with big equipment stayed in business. The West was well on its way to being settled.

#5 The Gold Rush was an important event because before the rush California’s population was very small. The number of people who settled afterwards was very significant and this led to California becoming a large and important state.
#6 The priority for many of the gold seekers was not necessarily comfort so many of the dwellings built were lacking in sanitation and even safety. Many of the camps were hastily constructed and much of the law was non-existent.
