Care Inspectorate News
The sheltered housing service underwent a
‘Validation Inspection’ from the Care Inspectorate in December 2015.
I am really pleased to advise that we were validated as still performing at a very good level.
The report concluded that :
“The manager and staff have worked hard to maintain the very good level of support to service
users.
The improvements made in support planning and
dementia awareness show a commitment to
continuous improvement and an acceptance of areas where improvement is required is evident.
The review of the service also secured the funding of a full time “Health and Wellbeing co-ordinator “.
This allowed the service to sustain and develop social and community activities and improve the
quality of life for service users.
We saw that service users were offered very good
quality interventions to improve outcomes and their general wellbeing. Staff were committed,
knowledgeable and determined to develop the support they offered to people.
Service users view the service very positively.”
If you would like a copy of the report, please speak
to your sheltered housing officer.

World Book Day—Lochfield Primary
My Life My Music—H-Arts
My Life My Music...was an unique reminiscence project which specialises in
working with our tenants in sheltered housing and isolated members of our
communities.
This inter-generational collaboration encourages participants to extend their
social network and supports them in creating music based performance
pieces. We had a series of tailored sessions to gather information and stories
and poems. The music and the script was created and rehearsed, using music
as a springboard for the sharing of memories. The process and the final piece
are ultimately personalised to each individual involved, encouraging creativity
building confidence and inspiring bright futures.
The final production was shown at the Strengthening Opportunities for Older
People in Renfrewshire Event within the Lagoon Leisure Centre and there was
also a performance for friends and family at Castlehead High School.
This project was thoroughly enjoyed by
everyone who took part and we are applying
for funding to enable us to produce another
project to celebrate Paisley 2021 UK City of
Culture Bid.
As part of our intergenerational work which has
been taking place at Lochfield Primary School. Our tenants were invited along to the school to
celebrate World Book Day. This involved reading to the children.
Our tenants were asked to take along their favourite book and everyone had a most enjoyable
day reading together.
We held our Annual General Meeting on the 11th March 2016.
There was a fantastic turnout and we were delighted to receive some new
members to the group.
We would like to express our
appreciation to all our committee members past and present, and give a
big welcome to the new committee members who have committed their own
time to the vacant posts.
We do try to keep these meetings fun and informative. We would like to hear
everyone’s views on activities they would like to see. You do not need to be a committee member to attend the meetings and free transport is provided.
If you are interested in attending these meetings, please speak to your sheltered housing officer.

Staff News
Forever Young—New Committee
We would like to extend our huge congratulations to
three of our sheltered housing officers.
Catherine McKay and Karen Winters both recently
successfully completed an SVQ Level 2 Health and Social Care. Both of them worked really hard and
we are very proud of their achievement.
Kerri Hunter was recently nominated in the ‘Team
Member of the Year’ category within Development and Housing Services Employee Recognition and
Awards Ceremony. Kerri was nominated due to her cheery, positive personality and her willingness to
help everybody. Kerri continuously works above and beyond her remit and is a valued member of the
team. It was a well deserved nomination.
Well done Catherine, Karen and Kerri.

Generations working together
We have been delighted to be working on some more intergenerational projects
and our tenants have been working alongside young people from local primary schools.
There is currently a gardening project with Glencairn Court and Gallowhill Primary School
Also there is our ‘Knit and Knatter’ project which is currently taking place
with tenants from Rowan Gardens and Speirsfield Gardens working with
Bushes Primary, Monkdyke House working with Kirklandneuk Primary School and Darkwood Court and Spingbank Complex woking with young people from
Glencoats Primary School.
We will continue to further develop our links with the wider community and will
expand on our intergenerational projects.
Here are some photographs from the sessions that have taken place.

Oral hygiene
We have arranged with Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership for an
Oral Health Training Officer to attend complexes to speak to you about Oral Health. If you would be interested in this taking place within your complex ,
please speak to Sally or your sheltered housing officer
Top tips for Oral Care
Brush teeth and gums twice daily using a dry toothbrush and toothpaste
containing 1450 parts per millions fluoride (can be found on the back of toothpaste tube)
Brush all surfaces of the teeth using a dry toothpaste with a pea sized
amount of toothpaste incorporating a gentle scrubbing technique.
After tooth brushing spit out excess toothpaste, but do not rinse your mouth out with either water or mouthwash to allow the fluoride to
strengthen the teeth.
Register with a general dental practitioner (high street dentist) and attend
for a oral examination at least once a year—even if you do not have any
natural teeth.
Denture Care
Clean dentures twice daily using a neutral detergent e.g. Fragrance free
hand soap, washing up liquid or a toothpaste formulated specifically for dentures.
Soak dentures for 20 minutes using a sodium hypochlorite solution e.g.
Milton.
Steradent tablets are not recommended as they do not eradicate MRSA or
oral thrush from the surface of the denture.
Ideally dentures should be removed at night and placed in cold water until morning.

Walk a mile
Tenants from Springbank and Monkdyke
participated in Walk the Mile on the 18th April, in aid of Mental Health Awareness.
Everyone had such a great time walking as a team.

are going to make a graph and celebrate each
milestone we reach.
If anyone is interested, please give your names
to Sally, Beckie or your SHO. We will also provide you with your own pedometer.
Congratulations Mr & Mrs Burns
