The 10,000 Hour Rule or Myth John O’Sullivan, a coach and founder of the Changing the Game Project, presented a

talk to soccer coaches to clarify the 10,000 Hour Rule (or myth) published by Dr. An-

ders Ericcson (1990). His research found that it takes 10,000 hours (20 hours for 50

weeks a year for ten years = 10,000) of deliberate practice to become an expert in

almost anything. Books have been written to discuss the 10,000 Hour Rule to ex-

plain athletic excellence like in Malcolm Gladwell’s “Outliers: The Story of Success”

and in Daniel Coyle’s “The Talent Code: Greatness Isn’t Born. It’s Grown. Here’s

How.” However, in recent years, books like David Epstein’s “the Sports Gene -

Inside the Science of Extraordinary Athletic Performance” have debunked the

10,000 Hour Rule (or myth) to become an Elite Athlete. READ MORE.

Midwest Regional League(MRL) Changes for 2014-15

March 2014 Volume 1, Issue 3

The weekend of February 21-22, 2014 in Topeka, KS was the AGM for Kansas Youth Soccer. As a part of the

events offered at the AGM, there were five presentations given for coaches to attend. Here are copies of the

presentations provided by the presenters.

“Motivation & the Young Player—Making an Impact”

- Presentation by Scott Moody, Owner of Athlete Fit

“Coaching With Purpose”

- Ryan Krzykowski, President and Founder of Community for Coaches

“Coaching the Female Athlete”

- Jill McCartney, Washburn University’s Assistant Athletics Director

How would coaches in this country like abundant skilled players to coach at lower costs?

Players and families can spend less time devoted to youth sports and spend more time with

family and school. We can have more success for our national teams and elite individual

athletes. This all sounds good to me and you would probably agree.

In this article posted on the ‘Changing the Game Project’ website, John O’Sullivan speaks to

the idea of identifying and developing talent for future success instead of selecting talent for

results today.

Tactical Evolution of the Game—presented by Nepean Hotspurs Soccer Club

Kansas Youth Soccer would like to recognize our players, coaches, and teams each month in this newsletter. How-

ever, no nominations were provided this month so we are featuring a past player to see where they are now and

where the game has taken them. The featured player is Adrianna “AD” Franch.

AD grew up in Salina, Kansas where she played multiple sports as a youth. However, soccer would be the sport of

choice. In 2004, AD would attend a tryout for the Kansas Olympic Development Program and history would be

made. CLICK HERE to READ MORE.
