A Quick Description
• The word Poem originated in Ancient Greece meaning I Create.
• Some types of poems are : acrostics, alphabets, haikus, limericks ,and rhyming poems. There are many more types about many different subjects from humor to history(a ballad if you were wondering).
• Poetry is a great way to teach people, particularly children how to read and write creatively, especially now in the modern world.

Amanda the Panda
Amanda the panda plays in a banda.
She plays a base guitar that sounds really bizarre,
when she plays the C string.She has never left Beijing
and Amanda the panda will never leave, but will always believe

Wolf but not one

Farewell
All of these poems were written by me and I hope you enjoyed them. If you were inspired by them or want to write your own I have brought paper to write on. So goodbye to the farewell friend. Parting is such sweet sorrow. Although we are saying goodbye, we are really preparing for our next

Types of poetry
Haiku
• A Haiku is a type of Japanese poem that can also be called a Hokku
• A Haiku poem has 3 lines and a total of 17 syllables
line 1- 5 syllables *Haiku poems DO
line 2- 7 syllables NOT have to rhyme*
line 3- 5 syllables
EXAMPLE: (5) The sky is so blue. (7) The sun is so warm up high. (5) I love the summer.
Riddles
• A riddle is a type of poem that describes something without actually saying what it is, making the reader guess
• A riddle can be about any subject. It can be funny and it can rhyme
EXAMPLE: I am an animal
I am black and white
I live in Asia
I eat bamboo
What am I?
ANSWER: A Panda Bear

• A Theme Poem is a type of poetry that describes an object and is shaped the same as the object the poem is describing.
• For example, a poem about love can be in a heart shape or a poem about a cookie can be in a circle shape
Acrostic
• An Acrostic Poem is a poem in which the first letters in a line spell out a word or phrase
EXAMPLE: Tall as the sky
Red crisp leaves in the fall
Ever growing
Endless beauty
Diamante
• A diamante poem is a poem that takes the shape of a diamond
• This poem has seven lines and follows these guidelines:
Line 1: Beginning subjectLine 2: Two describing words about line 1Line 3: Three action words about line 1Line 4: A short phrase about line 1,
Line 5: Three action words about line 7Line 6: Two describing words about line 7Line 7: End subject
Activity
We will separate the class into five groups. Each group will get a different type of poetry. Using the subject cards, you will make a poem using the guidelines of your groups type of poetry. After you have created your pieces, you can volunteer to read them aloud to the class.
EXAMPLE: Poetry type: Haiku Subject: Monkeys
poem: They eat bananas (5)
They hang out in the tree tops (7)
I love the monkeys! (5)
