CARDIAC COOGSOne year ago across state lines, the Cougars completed the most improbable comeback in program history
2 \\ Saturday, September 8, 2012 The Daily Cougar
Dawn of a new gamedayWhen the bright lights of Rob-
ertson Stadium faded Saturday night, Houston hoped the old adage, “it’s always darkest before the dawn,” would hold true.
UH saw several dark moments in its 30-13 loss to Texas State and the after-m a t h s e r v e d equally as dim with the resigna-tion of offensive coordinator Mike Nesbitt.“The sun came
up this morning and the sun came up Sunday morning,” said red-shirt senior defensive back Chris Cermin.
“You just kind of learn and burn. You watch the film, you see what your mistakes are and you correct them.”
The Cougars combated disap-pointment with determination as the week moved forward, believ-ing they were better than what was shown.
“Don’t believe that’s how we play,” said redshirt sophomore quarterback David Piland. “It’s the University of Houston and you should want to come out to every game because it will be that fun to watch.
If there’s someone on the wall about whether or not this is that team — this is that team — and we’ll make a believer out of you this Saturday for sure.”
The Cougars have a chance to redeem themselves against a strong and experienced Louisiana Tech squad tonight — a program that pushed UH to the brink of its first loss before Houston stormed back from a 34-7 deficit for a one point victory in Ruston, La. last season.
“They’re a veteran team and they’re similar to us on the offen-sive line with a lot of veterans back,” said head coach Tony Levine. “They’rwe a great team offensively and they’re really sound and aggressive defensively.”
A win over the Bulldogs — a potential Bowl Championship Series buster — would be the equivalent of throwing gasoline on the flame that is scarcely flickering and would ignite faith in a team with a long season ahead.
“We’ve got high expectations for our program,” Levine said. “You don’t judge a program, a team, on one opportunity.
You want to look back at the end of the season then you’ll have a feel how the year went.”

Some called them “Comeback Coogs” while others preferred “Cardiac Coogs” but whatever fans called them, no moment exempli-fied their nickname more than the comeback of all comebacks on Sept. 17, 2011 in Ruston, La.
The Cougars entered the 2011 season full of promise following the announcement of the NCAA granting Case Keenum an unprec-edented sixth year. After a state-ment-making victory over UCLA at Robertson Stadium in its opening
week, UH faithful examined a relatively soft schedule envision-ing perfection – then came the trip to Ruston.
Over 2 ½ quarters, Louisiana Tech dominated the Cougars, mov-ing the ball consistently and with ease on UH’s defense. The Bulldogs found the end zone twice in the first half and tacked on two field goals, while the Cougars offense struggled mightily and turnovers proved costly.
The Bulldogs took a 20-7 lead into half and had no intention of looking back.
“They confused us a little early,”
head coach Kevin Sumlin said in a statement after the game. “We talked at halftime about playing each way and how we can’t get it all back at one time; it’s going to take every play.”
Louisiana Tech tacked on two more touchdowns and took a 34-7 lead with 5:11 remaining in the third quarter. Then, something happened.
“There was some real soul-searching going on,” Sumlin said. In those situations, there’s a time to get mad, there’s a time to be angry — but there’s also a time to think rationally about what you’re
trying to do.”Fo r t y- f o u r s e c o n d s a f t e r
the Bulldogs took their biggest lead, Keenum and the Cougars responded – big, courtesy of a 50-yard touchdown pass to Patrick Edwards.
The next two UH dr ives lasted just under four minutes, both taking nine plays and more importantly ended in touchdowns courtesy of two Bryce Beall rushes closing the gap 34-28.
Then thanks to a huge sack by Sammy Brown forcing Louisiana Tech to punt, the Cougars got the ball back and made the most of
it.On a play where Keenum was
forced to scramble out of the pocket, he found Patrick Edwards at the back of the end zone for an over the shoulder catch.
“That’s just him, hustling,” Keenum said in a statement. “I just put it out there and he made one of the best catches I’ve ever seen in my life.”
The 35-34 win marked the biggest comeback victory in the 66-year history of UH football and helped further the legend of the Cougars heart-wrenching come-back abilities.
What’s in a name? One year ago, on the brink of their fi rst loss trailing 34-7, the cardiac, comeback Cougars lived up to their billing
In a game for the ages, quarterback Case Keenum helped lead the Cougars to 28 straight points over a quarter and a half capping the largest comeback in UH history. | File photo/The Daily Cougar

If Saturday’s matchup with Louisiana Tech is anything like last season, fans are in for a thrilling game.
In that classic, UH could not wrangle the lead from Louisiana Tech until the waning minutes of the fourth quarter when Case Keenum hit Patrick Edwards for 32 yards with 1:36 remaining.
“In our game against them last year, it took us roughly 58 minutes to finally win it, so it will be a tre-mendous challenge this year,” said head coach Tony Levine.
“Everybody knows what we have ahead of us Saturday and everybody will be up for the challenge.”
Both teams are depending on
different quarterbacks than the one’s who stood behind center in Ruston, La.
Bulldog senior, Colby Cameron replaced Nick Isham in Louisiana Tech’s competition against Utah State where he led two scoring drives that gave the Bulldogs a win.
Cameron never looked back and garnered a firm grip on the job by leading the Bulldogs to an 8-5 season. Louisiana Tech won six consecutive games and won the Western Athletic Conference after the aforementioned victory with Cameron’s best game being a 402-yard outburst in a 41-21 win over Fresno State.
“They’re a lot like our offense in the fact that they like to pass the ball a lot. We’re just going to go against our offense with our
tempo, and we should be fine,” said senior redshirt defensive back
Chris Cermin. The Bulldogs have a two-
pronged attack out of the backfield that compliments the passing
game where Ray Holley and Hunter Lee will both see time.
Lee’s named was added to the Doak Walker Award watch list in the preseason after rushing for 650 yards and five touchdowns in 2011 and also earned a scholarship last season after walking on as a freshman.
Holley rushed for 62 of the Bulldogs’ 233 yards on the ground against UH last season. The Bull-dogs had 66 rushes, compared to 32 pass attempts.
On defense, despite UH’s change at offensive coordinator, the Bulldogs said they are prepar-ing for the same Cougar offense.
“It does not [change our plans]. It cannot really,” Louisiana Tech head coach Sonny Dykes said.
“I think we are just going to assume we are going to see the
same thing. That is all you can assume.”
“They have been practicing what they are doing since the spring, so you have to assume that is what we are going to see on Saturday.
“We will adjust and prepare if we see something different.”
Louisiana Tech senior defensive back Chad Boyd could play a major factor in pass and run coverage. Boyd finished last season with 76 total tackles and three intercep-tions. Showing, he is not a corner who is afraid to mix it up with run-ning backs.
For Louisiana Tech, Saturday is its first game of the season after a matchup against Texas A&M in Shreveport, La. was postponed until Oct. 13 due to Hurricane Isaac.
Veteran program provides diffi cult matchupLouisiana Tech’s pass-heavy offense, tenacious defense similar to that of UH program from one year ago

Leader of the pack
Louisiana Tech Bulldogs running back Hunter Lee carried the ball just once last season against UH but is expected to be an intricate part of the offense
in 2012. In all, Lee racked up 650 yards and fi ve touchdowns on the ground last season while playing as a backup to Lennon Creer. The Cougars will hope to improve upon the 131 yards and two touchdowns given up against Texas State running back Marcus Curry in last weeks home opener. — Andrew Pate/The Daily Cougar

For offensive coordinator Travis Bush, coaching in Texas is in the blood.
Bush’s father, Bruce, was a high school head coach in the Lone Star State for more than three decades at Alice, Gregory-Portland, San Marcos and Pharr-San Juan-Alamo.
In 33 years, Bruce boasts 259 wins in-state.
The younger Bush followed suit, with stops at Texas Christian Univer-sity, Texas State, University of Texas at
San Antonio and now, UH.It’s Travis’ turn in the spotlight
now, finding himself in command of a Football Bowl Subdivision offense — granted, not in the best of circumstances.
When Mike Nesbitt resigned on Monday, it was announced that Bush would take over as offensive coordi-nator. He previously served as the UH running back coach.
Bush spent six years at Texas State, his alma mater, three as a receivers’ coach and three as the associate head coach and co-offensive coordinator
Bush met head coach Tony Levine
while a receiver with the Bobcats, where Levine was an assistant coach.
Levine is still confi dent in Bush’s ability to lead an offense.
“I feel good about our staff right now, and Travis Bush has done a fantastic job in the short time that we’ve all been here together. I have a tremendous amount of confi dence in Travis and the rest of our offensive staff, as do our players. I’m looking forward to not only Saturday night, but the rest of the season and the next 11 games that we’re promised,” Levine said.
During Bush’s fi nal season at Texas State, the Bobcats finished 12th in total offense (422 ypg) and eighth in passing offense (289 ypg), which led to an opportunity to christen University of Texas at San Antonio’s football program as offensive coordi-nator with former Miami head coach Larry Coker.
At UTSA, Bush’s offense averaged nearly 27 points per game with a bal-anced approach. The Roadrunners passed for 219 yards per game and rushed for 145 per contest.
Now Travis Bush is tasked with developing David Piland into a great
quarterback.“We are really excited. Coach Bush
stepped into the role and has done a great job of accepting it,” Piland said. “I was thrown into the fi re two years ago and now he is. He has been work-ing really hard around the clock, and we’re excited for Louisiana Tech and what he’ll bring for us.”
Once Bush was promoted, he stressed moving forward in two meet-ings with players, where the team discussed where it’s going next.
“We put Texas State behind us and started focusing on Louisiana Tech,” Bush said.
Bush takes over at OC following stint as RB coach
