Ryan Kellems, Ph.D
University of Oregon
Background
The Council for Exceptional Children (CEC) Division on Career Development and Transition (DCDT) board commissioned the study in March of 2008.
Purpose was to identify grassroots transition practices being used by practitioners.
Data Collection
An online survey was created using www.surveymonkey.com
Emails were sent to various stakeholders including: Current DCDT members Members of various listserves including those that
represent professionals and parents of students with disabilities (NSTTAC, NCSET, TATRA, etc.)
Data collection
Approximately 240 completed submissions were received.
Completed submissions were organize according to domains: Transition Planning Student Involvement Family Involvement Curriculum and Instruction Transition Assessment Assistive Technology and UDL Students from Specific Disability Groups
Review process
Initial review of the tips was completed by the researchers. The primary purpose was to combine similar tips and
eliminate incomplete submissions. Emails were sent to about 20 people requesting additional
information regarding their tip. 109 unique tips emerged from the initial review process.
Vetting Process
DCDT board members reviewed the 109 tips according to their areas of expertise.
The purpose was to make sure the tips did not go against best practices.
Approved tips were then edited for grammar and clarity but a special effort was made to preserve the unique voice of each submission.
