Generations of the Rossi family gather each deerseason to share the traditions of the hunt.
Story By Kathy Andrews
Returning from the servicein 1969, Dan Rossi was sur-prised to learn that deerhunting was open in Mont-gomery County.
“We’d never seen a deer, or even adeer track, on the family farm, but Idecided to give it a try,” Rossiexplained while gathered around thedining room table with 10 of his hunt-ing partners listening in, each chimingin with details they recalled from hear-ing recounts of the hunt. “I shot a 7-point buck with my Hunter’s 60-inchlongbow, and then our Dalmatianhelped me track it.”Rossi quickly pointed out that deer
hunting has changed considerably inthe last 39 years.“I’ve changed my tactics a lot since
those early days,” Rossi continued. “Iused to walk all over, but now I just sitin a tree or on the ground.”But some things remain constant—
sharing the sport with the family. Morethan a dozen family members nowgather each deer season at the elderRossi’s farm.“I’ve tried to teach the youngsters
two things: Safety comes first andkilling means something,” Rossi said.
“We’re not doing this for the thrill ofthe hunt.”The 11 hunters—ranging in age from
11 to 67—collectively had 210 years ofdeer hunting experience and had har-vested 263 deer. The house was filledwith noisy banter about the impressivebuck—the largest harvested by any fam-ily member—Rory Rossi had harvestedthat morning, and how each deer standhad earned its name: Brass Factory,Padded Stand, Swamp, Cliff Hanger,Two-Seater, Burlap and Airport.“Over the years we’ve built enough
deer stands to build a house, andhelped out the economy considerably,”Fred Rossi said with a chuckle.“Deer hunting is the best thing in
the world and a great way of life,” DanRossi said. “It doesn’t matter when the
family gets together—Easter, Thanks-giving or Christmas—we’re always talk-ing deer or turkey hunting. It’s in ourblood and we can’t get it out.”
The Big Buck Recognition Pro-gram honors deer hunters annually.
Qualifying deer taken by firearm andarchery hunters are scored by certifiedmeasurers after 60 days of drying, withstandards set by the Boone and Crock-ett Club. To qualify, deer taken byfirearm must have a minimum score of140 for a typical rack and 160 for a non-typical rack. For archery and crossbowhunters, the minimum score is 115 fortypical and 130 for non-typical antlers. For a list of measurers, visit www.dnr.state.il.us/events or call (217) 785-5091for more information about the BigBuck Recognition Program.
