WORLD DOWN SYNDROME DAY
21st March 2015 CAN YOU HELP US PROMOTE THE DAY?
Many schools have come forward to help us
celebrate the day and raise awareness and during
March we will be delivering assemblies at many
schools. A pack asking schools, organisations and
businesses to raise awareness and funds is still
available. It includes a CD of resources with poster,
sponsor form, ideas to raise cash, labels for
collecting tins/buckets and a PowerPoint should any
school wish to deliver their own assembly on Down
syndrome.
FAMILY EVENT AT CEDAR COURT
SATURDAY 21st MARCH 2015 We will be celebrating in style at the Cedar Court
Hotel, Bradford. Shabang! will be providing the main
entertainment, along with a disco room, hot buffet
and sleep over. There will also be tombola, raffle
and teddy tombola.
We would like to encourage families who have not
attended before to join us for the event. We have a
great time at the hotel and families staying over are
welcome to use the pool and leisure facilities. Its
like a mini holiday and breakfast the following

Thanks to Lindsay, a work experience volunteer, our
basement has been reorganized and two of the rooms are
now being used to display second hand toys, DVDs , books,
unwanted gifts, newly hand knitted baby
clothes and much, much more. All items are
very reasonably priced and we are happy to
accept donations. Our plan is to launch
Aladdin’s Cave on 17th March with tea,
coffee and scones served by Kim and a
chance to view some of the fantastic art
produced by our youth club.

ART EXHIBITION Over the months the young people who attend our WisH Club
have been producing many great works of art with Les, our
volunteer artist. These works of art will be on display on the
day and available to buy for a donation.
Why not call in on Tuesday 17th March between 10am and
12pm for a relaxing browse and refreshments.
“YOU CAN” EVENT ‘You Can’ is a free event organised by West Yorkshire
Sport in partnership with Bradford Metropolitan Council
and Bradford Disability Sport and Leisure. The event will
be held on Saturday 14th March, 10am to 2pm at University
Academy Keighley and will offer a wide range of activities
for disabled people including archery, boccia, rugby,
taekwondo, curling, athletics, climbing wall, adapted bikes

DEVELOPMENT
GROUPS
RED GROUP Tuesdays 3rd
and 17th March, 10.30am
to 12.30pm. This group is
delivered by Izzi Hogan
and is for infants with
Down syndrome aged
around 12 months. Any
younger babies are invited
to join the second half of this session at 11.30am when
there will be an opportunity to meet other parents and ba-
bies, chat, and join in singing and signing.
BROWN GROUP Our second new baby group will run
Thursdays 12th and 26th March, 10am to 12pm with
Margaret Southern.
BLUE GROUP, with Wendy Uttley. For children aged
around 2 years. Mondays 9th and 23rd March, 10 to 12pm.
PURPLE GROUP
Thursdays 5th and 19th March, 10am to 12pm, with Izzi
Hogan, for children aged around 24 months.
GREEN GROUP, with Izzi Hogan, for children aged around
3 years. Thursdays 12th and 26th March, 9.30am to
11.30am.
PINK EARLY EDUCATION GROUP for children aged
around 4 years, with Izzi Hogan. Mondays 9th and 23rd
March, 10am to 12pm.
ORANGE EARLY EDUCATION GROUP Mondays 2nd and
16th March, 10am to 12pm with Izzi Hogan. This is our se-
cond group for children aged around 4 years.

PLUS - with Wendy
Uttley Our EEG+ run once per month
for children aged 5
upwards. Support staff are en-
couraged to be present in the
room rather than parents, who
are welcome to attend but will be asked to sit in our parents
room or are welcome to share the session.
WHITE GROUP Monday 2nd March, 10am to 12pm. This
month we will be working on the speech sound k, the number 6
and basic sentences.
YELLOW GROUP Monday 16th March, 10am to 12pm.
GOLD GROUP Tuesday 24th March 10am to 12pm.
The yellow and gold groups will be working on numbers up to
12, early addition, words beginning with sn and st and early
shopping skills.
SPEECH & LANGUAGE GROUP SESSIONS
MARCH WELCOME TO OUR NEW TRAINEE THERAPISTS
This month we welcome Jodee and Lauren, two 3rd
year speech and language therapists, who have been
employed to work alongside Ben and Monica and learn
how best to deliver group sessions to children and
young people who have Down syndrome.
BEN and MONICA, with help from Lauren and Jodee,
will be delivering their group sessions on Saturday 21st
March.
MARY’S groups will run on Tuesday 17th March.
Wendy Rhodes will remind families of their time by text.
REGULAR GROUP SESSIONS
EASTER BREAK Groups break for Easter 30th March to 13th
April. Please note that this break follows the
Bradford school holidays rather than the Leeds
which is a week later.
FAMILY SWIM, SPLASH AND PLAY ON SUNDAY 15th MARCH
11AM TO 12noon AT BINGLEY
POOL
The swim session is free and the
pool is for our sole use. Come
along for a splash around, play
with the floats and practise your
swimming. Funded by the Brelms
Trust.
STREET DANCING Our weekly street dance session for young people with Down
syndrome aged 11 upwards is at Nabwood Sports Centre
every Monday, 6pm to 7pm with Karen. Come along and learn
some new moves and enjoy the music and dancing. Cost £3.20
per session - young people pay at the door as they arrive;
sneaking in some money skills as well!
Funded by ESH Charitable Trust.

holidays.

On 28th Feb is was our first anniversary and we had a party
to celebrate. We now have 23 members and each Friday
about 11 young people, plus volunteers and several personal
supports come along for a great evening.
If you are aged 11 or more why not come along and try out our
youth club on a Friday evening. The WisH Club, short for
Weekend is Here is full of equipment— large connect, pool
table, X box, TV, DVD player, football table, air hockey, chill
out area with bean bags and comfy couches. You are welcome
to bring along a friend or sibling age 11+.

Wendy Uttley will be talking to the
young people about personal
hygiene, in particular
managing hygiene around
menstruation. We hope the session will be relevant to
both girls and boys—they are at an age where they need to
understand more. If you would like more details on this please
drop me an email, Wendy.
GOING OUT CLUB, AGE 9+ This month our Going Out Club is for anyone aged 9+ and we
are going bowling to Shipley Lanes. On 18th March we will be
meeting at 6.15 for a 6.30 start. We will aim to finish for 8.
The evening is free but don’t forget to bring some spending
money for drinks and snacks. You are welcome to bring along
a sibling or friend, aged 9+.
Parents will be welcome to stay but
asked to be in a separate area
enabling the young people to develop
independence skills.

Clicker 6 - over two mornings Wednesday 4th & 11th March 2015, 9.30 to 12.30. Clicker 6 is a fantastic programme enabling users to build
their own sentences, make talking books by recording their
own voice, make word and picture lottos for topics and much
more.
The morning will introduce Clicker 6 and demonstrate its many
features. It will include activities to help you create your own
resources.
We have limited access to Clicker 6 at the Centre, however if
you already have Clicker 6 loaded on a laptop we encourage
you to bring it along. Please let us know when you book
whether you are able to do so or not.
Cost: £80 professional/£20 parent.

PARENTS, CARERS AND SUPPORT STAFF

Fridays: 13th March, 20th March, 27th March, 17th April, 24th April, 1st May 2015
The course will cover an overview of the learning profile of a
child with Down syndrome looking at how difficult behaviours
may develop. Parents will then be encouraged to focus on a
specific behaviour they wish to modify and we will discuss
methods and ideas to modify the behaviour. Support staff
working with the child are welcome to come along and be
involved in the session in a bid to provide a consistent
approach.
Each week opportunities will be offered to discuss progress
and learn from each other. Please note that this course is
primarily for parents.
Creche available 10am —12pm, £10, per child, per session.
My child has improved enormously, I have confidence in dealing with unwanted behaviours.
I am happier and more relaxed. My relationship with my child has improved.
I have been practising the strategies at home which are improving my child’s behaviour.

TRAINING
NORTH OF ENGLAND NETWORKING DAY
AT OUR CENTRE On Wednesday 22nd April, 9.30 to 3pm, we are planning a
networking event at our Centre in Bingley. Our aim is to
bring together the many support groups in the North of
England so that we can begin to share what we do and when.
The draft agenda includes opportunities for each support
group to detail the services they offer and discussion how
we could form ourselves into a strategy group to tackle
issues such as:
A pathway for babies, children, young adults with Down
syndrome – can we use our expertise to develop one that
covers all areas of development, ages and regions.
Do we need to develop a shared training package?
Speech and language – do we need to develop a network to
share expertise?
Early intervention – how can this be better shared/
developed?
Resources - can we develop a package of curriculum based
resources?
Funding – can we share ideas on how to succeed?
Developing groups/managing committees – can we share
expertise?

VOLUNTEERS AGED 12 TO 30 WITH DOWN
SYNDROME NEEDED FOR CLINICAL TRIAL Dr Mo Eyeoyibo, Clinical Lead and Consultant Psychiatrist
in Intellectual Disability ,Kent and Medway NHS and
Social Care Partnership Trust is running a clinical trial
which will look at the effects of an experimental drug on
learning, memory and language in people with Down

SIBLING STUDY As part of her third year psychology degree Kizzy Moss
is interested in learning more about what it is like to have
a sibling with Down syndrome. Siblings need to be over 18
and willing to take part in an hour long interview when
they will be asked to share their experiences.

ORAL HEALTH TRAINING SESSION The Oral Health Promotion Team is delivering a free 2
hour training session for anyone working with clients who
have learning disabilities. Tuesday 31st March 1.30 to
3.30pm at Waddiloves Health Centre, 44 Queens Rd,
Bradford, BD8 7BT.
The session will:
Provide information on dental access
Define oral diseases
Help you understand the duty of care, consent
procedure and capacity
Provide practical tips on promoting good oral health
Help you to be aware of the oral health problems of
people with learning disabilities
Raise awareness of the support which is available from
the Oral Health Team

HEALTHY ME
FREE FIVE DAY LEARNING HOLIDAY Between April 2015 and March 2016 there will be five
week long holidays based in Skipton for young people
with learning disabilities. The focus of the holiday is to
gain an understanding of how to make the right choices
in order to lead a more healthy lifestyle. Appropriately
trained and experienced staff will support individuals to
enjoy this unique experience. You will learn how to shop
healthily on a budget, cook healthy and tasty meals and
have fun while you exercise.

SUPER SATURDAYS AT EUREKA! Once a month there is a free fun packed morning at
Eureka’s Super Saturday and Holiday Clubs for disabled
children and their families. Clubs run from 10am'til 12pm,
then everyone's invited to join them for a Sensory Story
in the museum at 1.30pm and 3pm. The next session for
