Once again, I would like to thank Carm Zomeri and the committee members and volunteers who worked with her to bring together all of the various parts of last Sunday’s “Pennies To Heaven” event. It was a successful day. As usual, the chicken BBQ was great. We are known for our high-end theme baskets, and this is a major component of the day. Thanks to the parishioners and friends of the parish who donated them. The other activities added a nice touch to the day, as well. All in all, it was a good day. It usually takes several months for us to receive all of the bills for expenses related the this event. I’ll provide a final report on the event as soon as I can. Again, thanks to all who made it a successful day.
Wednesday of this week, August 15, is the feast of the Assumption of Mary into heaven – a holy day of obligation. The Vigil Mass for the holy day will be at 7:30 p.m. on August 14. Masses on the holy day itself will be at 7:30 a.m., 8:15 a.m., 12:10 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.
The feast of the Assumption marks the end of Mary’s life. It is also called the “dormition” or “falling asleep” of Mary. It is one of the oldest and most important feasts in the church calendar. It celebrates the heavenly birthday of Mary – the day she was taken into heaven. The feast is celebrated by the Catholic Church, all of the Orthodox churches, and the Anglican church. Our Catholic belief teaches that Mary, “having completed her course of earthly life, was assumed body and soul into heavenly glory.” The painting on the ceiling of the dome of our Basilica depicts the Assumption and Coronation of Mary. While we were on our spring pilgrimage to the Holy Land this past May, we had the privilege of praying at the Church of the Assumption (called the “Dormition Church”) in the area of Jerusalem called Mount Zion. It is a beautiful church and it was a beautiful experience.
Summer is quickly coming to a close. The local saying “once the Erie County Fair is here, summer is over” is truer than most of us want to believe. Before we know it, we will back in full swing with all of our fall routines. As students are returning to college, high school, and elementary school, I want them to know that we are praying for them and will continue to pray for them throughout the up-coming academic year.
We are awaiting a date from Bishop Malone’s office for the Sacrament of Confirmation this fall. We are hoping for a date in mid-to-late September or very early October.
May Jesus bless you and Our Lady of Victory watch over you.

Sacrament of Baptism: Our Parish offers a special Pre-Baptism preparation program for parents who desire to share their faith with their children. Parents-to-be must attend this class prior to the birth of their child. Baptisms are usually scheduled two times each month. Call the Rectory to register for classes. Godparents must be Confirmed and practicing Catholics. Non-parishioners are required to have a Letter of Recommendation to serve as a sponsor.
Sacrament of Marriage:
To be married in the Basilica, you must be an active parishioner for at least 9 months prior to setting a date. Engaged couples should contact the pastor before making other wedding arrangements. Couples are required to attend a Pre-Cana Conference, or equivalent pre-marriage preparation program.
Letters of Recommendation:
Recommendations to act as sponsors for Baptism or Confirmation can be issued only to registered members of Our Lady of Victory Parish who have received the Sacrament of Confirmation, attend Mass and receive Holy Communion regularly, have their children attending a Catholic school or Religious Education class. If married, the marriage must be in conformity with the regulations of the Catholic Church.
Devotions:
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament begins immediately after the 12:10 p.m. Mass in the Basilica on Fridays and concludes with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.
First Friday:
On the eve of the First Friday of each month there are confessions from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m. Mass is celebrated at 7:30 p.m. on First Friday.
Care of the Sick:
Please notify the rectory office for a visit to any family member who is sick, in the hospital or confined to home. Regular home Communion visits are usually on the First Friday of the month by a priest, deacon, or minister of the Eucharist.
Tours:
To schedule a tour of Our Lady of Victory Basilica, please contact Dianne Bosinski, Tours & Basilica Programs by email at dbosinski@ourladyofvictory.org or by phone at (716) 828-9424.
Summary of the Readings Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Today we resume the “Bread of Life” discourse from John’s Gospel that began two weeks ago. He makes reference to the Jews’ ancestors who ate manna in the desert. These days we would think primarily of Israel wandering in the desert, but faithful Jews would also have known the story of Elijah that we hear today. Strengthened by food and drink in the desert, the angel of the Lord sends him on his forty-day and forty-night journey (the biblical number for a preparation time). Like the food given to Elijah in the desert, Jesus tells his listeners that he is bread for the life of the world. It is very important that we not stop listening to Jesus after his promise of eternal life—a marvelous promise, but this “reward” is not the only reason we feast on the Bread of Life. We also come to the table to be made strong for the journey of mission, that the whole world might have life in the fullness of Christ. We are compelled, if we have eaten of the bread of life, to go forth in service to all. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

Adult Confirmation Classes
There are many adult Catholics who have not been Confirmed. Besides the fact that they have not been received into the full initiation of the Catholic faith, it becomes a problem when they want to serve as godparents/sponsors for Baptism/Confirmation. If you are a practicing adult Catholic (that is, go to Communion, and if married, married according to the rite of the Catholic Church) and have completed high school (high school students should be in our teen Confirmation program) consider attending the five catechism-review classes and receive the Sacrament of Confirmation from Bishop Richard Malone in the Fall. The classes begin this Thursday, August 16, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. in the Marian Room on the lower level of the Basilica. Please register by calling Father Romulus at 828-9425.
Life in the Spirit Seminar
Would you like to experience more of the Holy Spirit’s power and gifts in your life? Fan into flame the Holy Spirit you received at Baptism and Confirmation. Cost: $20 donation. Checks payable to Charismatic Renewal. Please RSVP by September 21.

Vocation Thought Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Jesus assures us that all who believe in Him will have eternal life. I’m sure that we have heard this lesson many times, but it can still be easy to forget. How is Jesus asking you to remind His people of His promise of eternal life? If God is calling you to a Church vocation, call Father Andrew Lauricella at 716-847-5535. Also, check out the “Priest of the Month” stories at www.buffalovocations.org.
