a similar fate. I wonder how far this story will have gone by the time you read this?
On a lighter note. I entered Pilning Flower Show as usual. My years of watching and helping Poppy (Yes, she’s my wife, Pat) arranging flowers led me to have a go. I became quite successful, learning the NAFAS rules, and the pinnacle of my efforts was to win £25 and the Bristol Flower Show Novice Cup. My competitive streak led me to take on the local flower arrangers and try to beat them! I came close on many occasions, coming second to an expert. 2015 was no exception and I decided to compete in all three classes. I enjoyed a few hours sitting in the garden with a bucket of greenery, the indispensable ‘Oasis’ foam and bunches of flowers. I also had a go at a ‘Man made cake’. I said to the lady who always beats me (she’s good) that I aimed to beat her and she said “I’m too busy to enter this year” Oh, I thought, I’m in with a chance! No, it got worse. Poppy swept the board!!I shall never beat her, and, in case you’re wondering, my cake got second prize, but then, there were only two entries!!

Hearts and Flowers
When the Hunter jet careered onto the A27 killing 11 people bits of video were soon on our TV screens. At the same time 70 bodies were discovered in a truck in Hungary, people fleeing war and wanting better lives. Prior to that around 500 people lost their lives in the sea off Libya, what happened to them? Then in Shoreham hundreds crammed onto a bridge and loads of flowers were laid. They held a minutes silence and the Last Post was played. Who, I wondered was mourning the people, including children, who suffocated in a lorry? As for those who drowned, who cared? Our TV screens never told us about that.
This ‘crisis’ isn’t going to go away. Our politicians tinker around the edges, but the problem is mostly ‘over there’ and they hope it will get solved somehow. Should we close our borders, pull up the drawbridge and drift away from Europe? I was beginning to wonder about how good we all are as fellow human beings when the awful images of a little boy lying dead in the sea suddenly galvanised our P.M. from ”No more migrants” to respond to a great wave of horror from the electorate.
Two little boys and their Mum may have changed British minds, and I hope they have saved others from

CommentWhy go to Church?
I sometimes wonder if people don’t go into Churches because they are afraid they are full of Christians. That everywhere they look they will see cheesy smiles and 1950’s hair-dos. I don’t suppose the ubiquitous heavy oak doors that lead into the church make that first visit any easier. Thoughts of saloon doors swinging open and all within turning their heads to make quick judgement before the organ strikes back up, and conversations are returned to, might well be evoked. Once inside, fears of looking foolish could well arise. What are all these rituals, words and responses about? Everybody seems to understand what is going on except me. Church can appear to be such and strange and threatening place. Best stay away! However as daunting as that first step into church may be, with so many unknowns and so full of potential for awkwardness, it can be undertaken without fear. Everyone is there for reasons both personal and collective. There is no definitive reason, some people will go for the music, some to be part of the history of the building, some for company, some for the rhythm the services give to the year, some through habit, some to worship above all else. The reasons are as many as the people who go. In my experience it is a step that many people wish to make but don’t. When people find out that I am a church goer they are often surprised. My lack of a 50’s quiff the reason I suspect. But so often they seem keen to talk about it, to understand my why’s and where’s and how longs. I’m frequently left feeling that many people have a sense that within that strange heavy doored building and within the words and mutterings and music there is something for them.
Rowan Williams has recounted hearing a student of his make the point that, ’The church is still a place where people put emotions that won’t go anywhere else.’ Rowan Williams himself builds on this point by expressing his belief that, ’We are living in a society which is uncomfortably haunted by the memory of religion and doesn’t know what to do with it.’ This idea of a lost memory is a powerful one for me as it seems to be what lies behind much said in my conversations with friends and colleagues about church. That there is something unique within the loss. At St. Peter’s we have times when the church fills, Remembrance Sunday, Weddings, St. Georges Day. Christmas etc. These are key points within life and the calendar of the year when the need to seek out something more, to make it special becomes a powerful desire. There is a call for that uniqueness. So why go to church? I believe it is to become a part of that uniqueness, the humanising pattern of commitment to something both inside and outside of oneself, to overcome the fear of the challenge of belonging, to embrace the transformative nature of the words and music, to be open to an ever deeper understanding of life and to be wrapped within the rhythm of the year. The opportunity to experience the reflection embodied within this is so rare. So hard to find. These days with the firestorm of image and inform that goes on around us, the gift of St. Peter’s allows us to step outside by going within is to be cherished. One allows oneself to be changed, to be made ready for the week ahead, to be reset. So ‘Why go to church?’ Well answered by Fr Timothy Radcliffe when he replied, ‘To be sent out again.’

Up,up and away!
On Monday evening 31 August, Mike Gibbons and his fantastic crew took Drs Fiona and Ian Ormerod on a spectacular Balloon flight, leaving from from Bradley Stoke and arriving 2 hours later as the sun was setting on Chipping Sodbury Common.
It was a beautiful, serene, exciting experience that I shall always remember.
I am most grateful to Mike and the patients of Pilning who organised this extremely special evening for me, as part of my very generous retirement send off.
Thank you all, and please know that I frequently reflect fondly about you all and on the happy years I spent working in Pilning.
Fiona
IN MEMORY OF RONALD BERNARD SINGER (RON)
It was with sadness that the Parish Council learnt of the death of Ron. Ron served as a Parish Councillor from June 1970 to June 1979 and from October 1981 to July 1987. During his time on the Parish Council he presented the New Cemetery Land to the Council and continued after his retirement to serve on the Edmunds and Cole Charity of which he was Chairman for many years, finally retiring in 2014. The Parish Council presented him with a piece of Bristol Blue to mark his many years of service. His funeral was at Canford on Friday 21st August at 10.30am, with donations to the
Salvation Army. On a personal note I will remember Ron with thanks for helping me when I first joined the Parish Council in 1976, being the only woman it was a bit off putting, but he and Roy (Edwardes) looked after me. I shall always remember our chats, after he retired, through the fence at his orchard when he would talk about the trains and the memories of friends buried in the cemetery. Rest in Peace Ron and thanks for all you have done for the Parish.
Frances Barr, MBE, Chairman of Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council.

News for Pilning & Severn Beach
7th September 2015
Dear Ward Members,
service at Avonmouth without adequate onward transport to our station.
Infant Mortality Rate – Still born babies have dropped by 8% and there has been a reduction in small babies. This is attributed to the reduction in smoking around pregnant women.
Whooping Cough vaccinations – 50% of pregnant ladies are no longer having these free injections. They are meant to give new born babies a resistance to this disease.
Drug Deaths – 33,000 people died of drug related illness including addiction in 2014.
Travellers – The encampment of travellers have left the Severn Beach foreshore on the 14th August, leaving behind piles of rubbish including half a lorry load of industrial video tapes one with the name of Mark Weston LWT (London Weekend Television) and leaving two residents with dog bites, so I am informed. The Public right of way is

now open. Abandoned horses have been left in the field next to Pilning School.
Tattooing DIY Kits - These are being sold online for £24 each. The LGA (Local Government Authority) is worried about the complications using these can cause people and the extra expense to the NHS.
Antimicrobial Resistance – This big medical word implies that a great number of patients are regularly being prescribed too many antibiotics which
can compromise their future treatment for an illness. Over the last 20 years no new ground-breaking antibiotics have been approved.
Yours sincerely,Robert C. Griffin Councillor for Pilning & Severn Beach.

NHW -‐ Easter Compton -‐ August Newsletter Subject: Be aware of spoof emails claiming ‘buyer protection’ From: Action Fraud (Action Fraud, Administrator, National)
Online auction websites are being used by fraudsters to advertise vehicles for sale which do not exist. The fraudster advertises on an auction website and gets their victim to agree to purchase a vehicle, making sure that all correspondence is done via email. The victim then receive emails which claim to be from genuine payment merchants or auction websites which state that the money they have paid for the vehicle will be held in an ‘escrow account’. The email indicates the money will be released to the seller, once the person has confirmed that they’re happy with the purchase. The email says that this will provide the person with ‘buyer protection’. In reality these emails are fraudulent, they don’t come from the named companies and the bank accounts are controlled by fraudsters. Protect yourself: - Always stay within the terms and conditions of the auction websites. - Remember that PayPal do not include vehicles under their buyer protection. - Meet the seller ‘face to face’ and view the vehicle before parting with any money. - Be vigilant of emails that purport to be from genuine companies and check the ‘domain’ name of the email address for any inconsistencies. - Check feedback online by searching the associated phone numbers or email addresses of the seller. - If the vehicle is below market value consider whether this is an opportunity which is too good to miss.

SEVERN BEACH FOR GLOR'OUS SUNSETSMy requests for pictures for the cover of In View frequently turn up photo's of the two bridges, sometimes in glorious sunsets. lt wouldn't look right to have similar pictures on the cover too often, and, they often come in landscape format, which means cropping off half of the picture. Here is a beauty by Andy Trott
Having sat in 'The Fox' a few times, opposite a sunset picture, I begin to realise how photogenic our bridges are, adding interest to the skyline that wasn't there 50 years ago. I always feel we have so much in our bit of the world to wonder at.

Pilning Flower Show Report 2015
The ever popular Pilning Flower Show continues to go from strength to strength in its 46th year. The judges reported the quality of the 462 entries, which beat the show’s record only set last year, to be as high as they could remember. Judge Ray Worsley from Thornbury, who organisers were pleased to see returning after being hospitalised in 2014, said “The standard has certainly gone up over the years and the main hall of St Peter’s School is a wonderful facility for showing things at their best”. The school was a mass of colour and was full of interest to the many visitors that came to see the displays of local talent during the afternoon.
Taking home the ‘Best in Show Shield’ was Graham Hawkins from Southmead, with his near perfect ‘top tray’ of vegetables. Graham’s vegetables took nine firsts and won four other trophies. Top in flowers was Mervyn Jacobs and special mentions go to Pat Edwardes and Albert George who had clean sweeps in flower arranging and wine making respectively. ‘Best in Show by a Parishioner’ went to Veronica Hathway for her beautifully detailed knitted circus clown in the well supported adult crafts section. Quality and numbers of photography entries were also up, with Steven Wharram of Severn Beach winning best overall. Taking most points in the show was the Dark family, narrowly pipping Edward England. Two special moments in the awards were; Lucy Perkins receiving the newly donated ‘Trevor Fry Junior Cup’ from Trevor’s son Sam, and former organiser and show President, Elaine Hodge, presenting the new ‘President’s Award’ to the top craft entry.
Everyone was able to pick up bargains in the concluding charity auction of show produce and special items donated by local businesses, which was amusingly delivered by witty locals; Dave Derham and Nick Harley. Top lots involved; an MOT at Pilning Garage, vouchers for Almondsbury Garden Centre and Thornbury Garden Shop, meals at the Plough and Hawkes House and flowers from Tesco, but top of the pile was Elmtree Garden Contractors’ ‘two men for a day’.
Anne Hale from this year’s chosen charity Pilning Pips, was on hand to present trophies and to receive an initial cheque for £500. Organiser Richard Edwards concluded, “It was a tremendous show and we really are grateful for the enthusiasm of the competitors, the appreciation and generosity of everyone that attended and of course all our sponsors. There are too many to mention individually, but they feature in the programme, on displays in the hall and on our Facebook page. We’ll put photos from the day and the full results onto Facebook and the results will also appear on the Thornbury Gazette website”. Other show awards: points in vegetables/potatoes/onions/tomatoes ‐ Graham Hawkins; fruit ‐ Richard Edwards; baking ‐ Diane Lloyd; Gladioli ‐ Mike Fish; best children’s entry ‐ Xanthe Larner; tallest sunflower ‐ Kirah Dark. Parish Council awards: Allotment Pilning ‐ Norman Pearce, Allotment S.Beach Jill Fysh; best front gardens ‐ Mr & Mrs R Hathway, Pilning, Mrs C. Nemeth, S.Beach; best commercial frontage ‐ The Plough.
The AGM will take place at 7:30 at the Plough on Mon 12th October All are welcome.
Ron Singer
Olive, Heather and Tony would like to thank everyone including all their family, friends, neighbours and the many villagers for your kind messages of support and sympathy at Ron’s passing. Ron lived all his life in Pilning and loved his village. He would have been honoured that so many of you were able to join us to celebrate his life and proud of all the very generous things that people said about him. The donations in Ron’s memory to the Salvation Army were over £400. Thanks to your generosity this will be gratefully received by Logos House, the local homeless shelter in Wade Street, Bristol.

Dear Editor13th August and another sewerageblockage in Wainbridge Cres. This is at least the third time it has happened this year. Wessex Water was called to clear the blockage. A large quantity of rags and wipes were dragged out of the system before it was cleared.
Since the late 1970's there have always been problems with the sewerage system in Wainbridge Cres. due, it is thought, to the collapse of the pitch Fibre pipes which were fitted when the houses were constructed in the 1960's and only had a life of 30 years, which has long expired.
ln the early years, up to a couple of years ago, when a blockage occurred theCouncil or a private company were called to clear the blockage and the residents had to pay for the work to be done as the sewer then was private. This all changed a couple of years ago when the sewer became public and we do not now have to pay to get any blockages cleared. Every time a blockage occurs it costs money to get it sorted and this could be happening five or six times a year.
Several years ago part of the main sewer was replaced due to collapsed pitch fibre pipes and the residents had to pay the cost, which amounted to several thousand pounds.
What l would like to see is a complete survey carried out on the sewerage system in Wainbridge Cres. to find out what needs to be done to stop the blockages occurring.

NHS Friends & Family Test
The NHS Friends & Family Test is the health service’s biggest patient feedback tool. On the Reception desk at Pilning Surgery you will find NHS Family & Friends Test questionnaire cards.Following your visit to the surgery, either to see the doctor or a nurse, we should be grateful if patients could pick up and complete the short questionnaire. The information from the completed cards helps to measure the quality of service experienced by patients during their visit. The form can also be found on the Pilning Surgery
website should you prefer to complete one online.
With the help of your feedback the NHS can strive to improve the service for the benefit of us all.- Flu Vaccination Clinics -There are two definite dates planned for flu vaccinations, on Friday 2nd and Friday 9th October.Patients who are eligible for the vaccination will receive a letter in late September. Patients will need to telephone for an appointment as usual.

SEVERN BEACH & DISTRICT OVER 50’S CLUB Well, it’s October already, and to paraphrase the great Victor Meldrew “ I can’t believe it”. Of course the summer was a damp squib, literally, and easily forgotten, although we had some brilliant weather on our coach trips and some unforgettable moments, so fingers crossed for the same next year. At the club, as a concession to the approach of winter, as well as turning on the heating and donning our thermals (actually that’s just me) we have already agreed to ditch the sparkling Rose in favour of warm full-‐bodied Reds. We must all be prepared to adapt to the seasons! But whatever you do to get through the winter months, please don’t stay at home and hibernate. Get out of the house and come and have some fun with us! This month we have live entertainment from Tapestry, a coach trip to Exeter, a harvest sale, and prize Bingo. MARTIN GOETZE Martin was a partner in Goetze and Gwyn, the company undertaking the restoration of the organ at St Peter’s. There will be some of you who will remember him patiently explaining and demonstrating how to voice organ pipes when we visited the works earlier this year. Sadly Martin lost his battle with cancer at the age of 64 and will be greatly missed. He became President of the Institute of British Organ Builders for 4 years and travelled the world working on organs. His staff in Worksop made his coffin from old organ pipe cases, and will carry him to his resting place wearing their working boilersuits. A fitting tribute from staff
who held him in high regard. Roy

News From Severn Beach School
After 6 glorious weeks of the summer holidays, September soon arrived and we were thrilled to welcome 23 new children into our Reception class as well as 6 other children in other classes throughout the school. We now have well over 100 pupils!
We also welcomed 2 new teachers, Miss Griffiths and Miss Sheppard who, along with the children, are settling in well.
Future Stars are once again delivering sports coaching to pupils as well as running an after-school club. FunkyPunk are also coming in again this year, teaching ukulele, guitar and keyboard lessons and singing with the whole school each week.
Oystercatchers are having swimming lessons this term. They also spent a day dressed as WWII evacuees as they learned what life was like in Britain during the war.
Parents were invited into school in September to meet their child’s class teacher and we held Open Days for parents of children due to start in Reception this time next year. We are always thinking ahead!
We took part in International Speak Like a Pirate Day and everyone came to school appropriately dressed – aaarrrr!

PILNING & SEVERN BEACH W.I. October brought us to our Annual General Meeting, and election of Officers and Committee. Carl Sheddon from Trading Standards came to inform us of the changes recently introduced in connection with the Rights of Consumers. You now have 14 days to cancel a contract instead of the previous seven days. Unfortunately, milk deliveries, paper rounds and time-share agreements are not included. They co-operate with DEFRA, Police, Inland Revenue and Primary Care Trusts. Anything suspicious should be notified to them with a photograph or car registration number. Some interesting information. A good Federation Annual General Meeting was held at Weston-super-Mare in September and enjoyed by three members who attended. The Knitters’ Coffee Morning on 1st October was attended by 7 visitors and 12 members. There are also two events in November where some members will be present. Plans are being set up for our post Christmas Lunch in early January. Please ring 01454 631170 for any further information regarding our meetings on 3rd Wednesday of the month at Mafeking Hall, Pilning.
Pilning & Severn Beach WI Coffee & Cake Knitting Morning
10.15 Wednesday 7 October 2015 in Mafeking Hall, Pilning
Here we go again! We are looking forward to seeing you all to enjoy yet another of our coffee & cake morning get-togethers and to catch-up on the latest. We are always in awe at the amount of beautifully knitted items that you bring in, year in and year out, for many years now. Well done ladies, and it must be a joy to know it all goes to where it is needed the most, making some little ones lives just that little bit more comfortable. Your efforts are so much appreciated.
Anyone reading this and who loves to knit would be made most welcome at
our coffee mornings. No actual knitting is done on these days, it just gives the opportunity for knitters to bring in all the knitting they have done between coffee mornings, which we hold twice a year, on the first Wednesdays in May and October.
As always, we should be very grateful for any donations of knitting wool, which may be dropped off at our coffee morning, or feel free to stay! You will be made most welcome.

Community Spirit On a beautiful summer afternoon in July we celebrated the life of Wardie with a memorable service at Compton Greenfield Church conducted by Rev. Ann Lloyd. This was followed by a lovely cream tea. A sum of £400 was divided between Parkinsons UK and Marie Curie in lieu of flowers. On 9th August a Bumper Cream Tea in aid of Marie Curie was held at The Hunter's at The Yews Easter Compton, with a raffle and side stalls where an amazing £651.30 was raised.
Alicia. Nigel, Paul, Shari, Nicholas and Christopher would like to express their sincere appreciation for all the kindness and generosity of friends also everyone at Pilning Surgery and Pharmacy, all who contributed in different ways to enable Wardie to enjoy so much that our community has to give.

SEVERNSIDE SAFER STRONGER COMMUNITY GROUPS
The group held it's meeting at Easter Compton Village Hall on the 29th July and was well attended by around 45 members and guest speakers. The chairman opened the meeting by thanking everyone for their attendance and also thanked those who helped with the distribution of the leaflets and posters to advertise the event. The chairman gave a brief talk on his activities over the previous three months which included a meeting with Street Care to express concern over the poor state of some road surfaces in our area, these will be considered at the next Street Care meeting for inclusion in next years list for action.
I attended meetings with regard to the proposed helicopter site at Almondsbury. The planners had given their approval and at a meeting of South Glos councillors they also voted by an overwhelming majority in favour. This is now at the Secretary of State for a final judgment. We still await Hydrock to inform us of their intention for use of the old travellers site at Over and the Wave project is delayed due to technical problems with the machine that generates the wave. The two South Glos councillors were in attendance and Robert Griffin, Pilning and Severn Beach and Keith Birchell, Almondsbury were introduced to the meeting.
The first guest speaker was Kristy Spindler head of waste management at South Glos. Kristy gave a presentation on how our waste collections are managed and disposed of and informing us that we are still putting recyclables into our black bins which include food waste, glass and plastics, garden waste and textiles all of which could be recycled and therefore reduce the amount going to land fill.
Donna Whinham from planning gave a presentation on the Cribbs/Patchway New Neighbourhood development that included Filton airfield and sited the number of developers that are involved and the planned number of dwellings to be built together with Schools, Community Centres, Medical Facilities, Shops, Employment Facilities and others. It was also explained how transport for the region as a whole would be catered for via major junction improvements, new bus services, rail links and cycle paths and footpaths. The local Police Beat team gave their report giving numbers of burglaries, thefts and other crimes in our area assuring us that they are at a very low number. Horse fly grazing has become a little more of a problem but steps were being taken to trace and prosecute the perpetrators. Speeding on the roads was also mentioned with the Mobile Detection Van being deployed as often as possible. The chairman of Pilning and Severn Beach Parish Council gave a brief talk on their activities over the previous three months. There was no report from the Almondsbury PC.
There was then a review of priorities and any other business after which it was announced that Jacqui Ward our South Glos liason officer was moving to a different department and that this was her last meeting with us. Jacqui was thanked for all her work with us over the years and given a well deserved ovation.
Finally the chairman explained that the date of the next meeting could not be announced as the SSCG as a whole were the subject of reorganisation and restructure by South Glos. When the outcome is known it would be communicated in the usual way via leaflets and posters upon which the Chairman thanked everyone and the meeting was closed.

An Update from Severn Beach Dragon Tang Soo Do
August was a quiet month with the summer holidays. The younger students were able to stay an extra half an hour, cramming more learning time into their practice.
On 1st August, two students successfully graded for their next belt receiving their certificates a couple of weeks later. Mathew Brown has now achieved 2nd Gup Red Belt, meaning he only has 2 gradings left before he goes in for the Black Belt grading. He achieved some amazing scores on the day. Tyleigh Ellicott also graded to 6th Gup Green Belt, just under half way to Black Belt. On the day she ensured the examiners knew she was there, showing off her extremely high kicks and sparring ability. Overall I had positive feedback for both students and I was extremely impressed with their efforts.
We are now counting down the days to the Regional Open Championships held on the 19th September in Thornbury Leisure Centre. Several students will be competing, and we are working towards achieving another amazing sweep of trophies.
As a side note, we would like to say HUGE congratulations to Alex Conway, our 1st Dan Black Belt, who passed his GCSEs with exceptional results. He is now heading into Sixth Form. We are very proud of him.
