> “Didn’t we just watch that the other day?”
A typical reaction when turning on the TV set nowadays.
It seems they’ve run out of content or news; not to mention that the news we have is of-ten repeated every ten minutes, as if we had not gotten or understood it the first time. And sure there are viewers who tune in and out of channels… I’d say mainly because they are an-noyed by an overwhelming amount of com-mercials. It’s more like a lineup of commercials that has a few minutes of content in-between. I feel cheated, paying for cable/adding more channels and receiving less and less of actual content every year. Of course I like commer-cials as much as the next guy, however, under-standing that the commercials are only effec-tive to some degree is important.
When analyzing the advertisement industry, it is important to remember that television advertisers are presented with “Nielsen Rat-ings,” which promise that millions of viewers will be watching their segments, but in reality, these estimates are based on a small amount of people. These ratings are tested on perhaps 1,000 or so viewers that, in actuality, are volun-teers, and the rest of the numbers are simply guesses.
I would be very surprised if a print magazine could sustain such practice. At Style Maga-zines, we know that if we were to repeat our editorial content in every issue, probably very few people would be enticed to read or even buy another magazine.
Most people do not realize the valuable influ-ence that magazines have on consumers when compared to other forms of media. A recent study of luxury magazine advertising ROI by ‘Marketing Evolution’ found that magazines are the most cost-effective means of influenc-ing consumer behavior at certain stages of the decision-making process, or “purchase fun-nel,” beating out television and online media.
The magazine industry is more capable of reaching, and more importantly, keeping con-sumers than other media, and it dominates two crucial stages of the consumer process: brand familiarity and purchase intent.
The brand familiarity of luxury magazines has become almost twice as effective as both TV and online media combined, and a study has revealed that in estimating numbers of con-sumers reached per $1,000., magazines index at 181 people versus 100 for television and 101 for online media. This brand familiarity is even more economical in the magazine industry, as the per capita cost to increase brand familiarity is about $1.40 for magazines, which comes in at a lower rate than the $2.61 spent for tele-vision and the $2.58 for online media. Maga-zines also dominate purchase intent, influenc-ing 145 people versus 100 for television and 68 for online media. Expressed as a per capita expenditure, magazines cost about $1.23 per individual impact, much less than the $1.77 spent for TV and the $2.61 for online.
These results can be found in a study from ‘Marketing Evolution,’ an independent mar-keting research company.

> Aerial yoga has been evolving for years now but has just recently taken the yoga world by storm. Many studios that offer traditional yoga are starting to add new aerial yoga classes. Developed by former gymnast and Broadway choreographer Christopher Harrison, aerial yoga blends elements from traditional yoga and aerial art, which makes for a yoga practice that will literally sweep you off your feet!
So you probably want to know what you’re getting yourself into before you show up for class. Of course every studio has their own way of doing things but these are some basics about aerial yoga. Everyone will be using a fabric aerial hammock that’s suspended from two hooks attached to the ceiling. Each hammock can support up to 2,000 pounds, so no need to worry! You will be taken through standing and seated poses, inversions, and balancing postures all while using your hammock. It is a relatively low-intensity workout although, like any other yoga class, some poses can be challenging. Now it may sound like you have to be some kind of acrobat to give
aerial yoga a try, but that’s certainly not the case. Almost every studio you visit will tell you that beginners are welcome and encouraged to come to class. You have to start somewhere, right? So, before your first class go in with an open mind. This practice comes with some health benefits that are too good to pass up.
Aerial yoga helps build flexibility and agility as well as core strength. Floating in the air gives you the ability to ease into your stretches more than stretching on the ground. If you have back pain, aerial yoga could be your answer. The hammocks make inverted poses, such as hanging bound angle pose and shoulder stands easier to hold in correct alignment. If your alignment is corrected while holding these poses it takes a substantial amount of pressure off the neck and back. These inversions relieve back pain by creating space between your vertebral discs of your spinal cord which helps decompress and realign the spine.
Poor posture is an issue many people are faced with. Aerial Yoga can take you out of that slump! It increases your joint mobility, gives your tight muscles a break and properly aligns your bones to better your posture. Proper posture in itself has plenty of long-term health benefits. Feeling stressed or down in the dumps? Another benefit of aerial yoga is it makes you feel happy. Inverting your body can trigger the release of endorphins and serotonin, which are happy hormones.
Your favorite pose in aerial yoga may be the cocoon pose. All you are asked to do is relax and curl in a ball; your hammock will support you and do the rest. You’ll leave your studio wanting more time to hang upside down! So if you’re looking for something new put a twist on your traditional yoga class and give aerial yoga a try!

Before we said goodbye to February and hello to spring, Athleta and Or-lando Style Magazine presented Ath-leta’s Orlando store-opening party at the Mall at Millenia. Over 500 people
packed the brand new store on Febru-ary 17th, bringing a whole new meaning to the phrase “grand opening.” Athleta boasts performance-driven apparel in cute, feminine designs for all your active adventures. Guests of the grand open-ing party enjoyed drinks and appetizers as they scoped out the new store and shopped for some of the hottest work-out apparel to hit the City Beautiful!
The month of March marked the first full month of KASA Modern Tapas & Raw Bar’s all new Unwine’d Wednesdays. Since its kick-off on Feb 26th, KASA has steadily seen a growth in the popularity of their hit weekly event. Wednesday night! Unwine’d Wednes-days is becoming a weekly highlight for many locals who enjoy a refreshing beverage and live entertainment on the outdoor patio of one of Downtown Or-lando’s hottest restaurants.
Any event is bound to be successful with Orlando Style in the mix so it only makes sense that we would team up for yet another successful event. Located in the heart of downtown, Firestone Live has become a nightclub of international recognition. Hailed as one of the “fresh-est nightclubs in the world” by Billboard magazine and Rolling Stone, on March 7th, Firestone Live kicked off their first collaborative artistic event “One Chic Fete.” The ticketed event featured over 40 local artists, musicians, fashion de-signers and more, including vocal sensa-tion The Edge Effect and special guest Casey Conroy. From runway shows and live music performances to henna art and a photography gallery, One Chic Fete brought together a fantastic fusion of all things creative for one unforget-table celebration.
From March 8-16th, more than 100,000 Harley-Davidson enthusiasts from across the globe turned out for Orlando Bike Week 2014. The event was headquar-tered at the Orlando Harley-Davidson Historic Factory Dealership, a detailed re-creation of the 1910 factory and the 1903 “shack” in which the Harley legend was born. Some of the many festivities included live music, games and shows. One of the headlining events was the Thursday Night Fight that took place on the 13th. Large crowds turned up to watch amateur fighters take each other on in a “Bikeweek Beatdown” of ex-treme cage fighting. In addition to the many other Bike Week activities, attend-ees also got the chance to enjoy various vendors providing everything from new
bike accessories and sunglasses to clas-sic leather attire and heavy metal jewelry.
St. Patrick’s Day weekend brought a very different kind of party to Wall Street Pla-za from March 15-17th. Downtown Or-lando’s popular hangout spot was a sea of green as hundreds arrived from near and far to enjoy a three day weekend of partying with live Irish music and plenty of green beer. The fun-filled weekend kicked off on Saturday with the St. Prac-tice Day Block Party. Sunday Funday St. Pat’s Style followed with yet another raging party, but Monday proved to be the main event with the St. Patrick’s Day Block Party. Doors opened at high noon so everyone could start their week off right—with more Guinness, more Jame-son and even more green beer! Live mu-sic from 7 Nations, Off Kilter, The Lighter Exchange and Pipes & Drums kicked the party up a notch as attendees laughed, drank, threw beads and shook their shamrocks all night long.
Wedding bells are in the air and many Central Florida women were able to say “yes to the dress” at last month’s Brides Against Breast Cancer Charity Wedding Gown Sale & Bridal Show. The success-ful event took place on March 16th and brought a large crowd and plenty of
brides to Embassy Suites Altamonte. From March 21-23rd, the 2014 Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival held its 55th annual show. Named America’s Best Ju-ried Fine Art Fair by Art Fair Calendar, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival is one of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals. It is also ranked the #1 Best Fine Art and Design Show in the southeast by Sun-shine Artist magazine. The festival took place in Central Park along Park Avenue in downtown Winter Park and brought thousands of local artists and art lovers in the Central Florida community to-gether. The festival is produced by an all-volunteer board and draws more than 350,000 visitors each year. > The former headquarters of the Orlando Utilities Commission now has a South Beach look. The three-cylinder combustion engine in the BMW i8 develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric motor draws its energy from a lithium-ion battery, which can be charged from a conven-tional domestic power socket, and sends its power to the front axle. This bespoke plug-in hybrid system, de-veloped and produced by the BMW Group, enables a range in everyday driving of up to 35 kilometres (approx. 22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (approx. 75 mph) on electric power alone, coupled with a “glued-to-the-road” all-wheel driving experience headlined by powerful acceleration and a dynamically-biased distribution of power through enthusiastically taken corners. The more powerful of the two power sources drives the rear wheels and uses the electric boost from the hybrid system to deliver hallmark BMW driving pleasure while at the same time offering groundbreaking levels of effi-ciency. The sprint from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) takes just 4.4 seconds, yet av-erage fuel consumption – as calculated in the EU test cycle for plug-in hybrid vehicles – stands at 2.5 litres per 100
kilometres (113 mpg imp) from launch. CO2 emissions come in at 59 grams per kilometre.

The revolutionary character of the BMW i8 is emphasised by a further innovation: the use of an internal combustion engine which is making its debut in this model. The BMW i8 is the first BMW production model to be powered by a three-cylinder pet-rol engine. This highly turbocharged unit is equipped with latest-generation BMW TwinPower Turbo technology. It is exceptionally compact and develops maximum power of 170 kW/231 hp from its 1.5-litre displacement. The re-sulting specific output of 113 kW/154 hp per litre of displacement is on a par with high-performance sports car en-gines and is the highest of any engine produced by the BMW Group.
The car’s second power source is a hybrid synchronous electric motor specially developed and produced by the BMW Group for the BMW i8. The motor develops maximum power of 96 kW/131 hp and produces its maximum torque of around 250 Newton metres (184 lb-ft) from standstill. Typically for an electric motor, responsive power is instantly available when starting and this continues into the higher load ranges. Credit for the linear power de-livery, which extends right up to the high end of the rpm range, goes to a special motor design principle ex-
clusive to BMW i. BMW eDrive tech-nology refines and improves on the principle of the permanently excited synchronous motor with a special ar-rangement and dimensions for the torque-producing components. This results in a self-magnetising effect nor-mally confined to reluctance motors. This additional excitation ensures that the electromechanical field generated when current is applied remains stable even at high rpm.
Customers also have the option of or-dering the BMW i Wallbox Pro. Among the benefits provided by this second version of the charging point are addi-tional convenience features. The BMW i Wallbox Pro has a 7.4-inch colour touchscreen which optimises manage-ment of the charging process. Among the information displayed on the TFT monitor are the battery charge level, the amount of energy fed into the bat-tery so far and data on previous charge cycles. Information about charging times and energy consumption can be called up in lists sorted by user or ve-hicle. The available information can be transferred via an internet connection, for example for comparison or billing purposes. A BMW i Wallbox Pro which is accessible to several users can be protected from unauthorised use via PIN codes.
This version of the charging point has been specially designed for use with self-generated solar energy. To this end, BMW is working with SOLAR-WATT to give future owners of a BMW i vehicle access to innovative carports equipped with glass-glass modules for charging the battery – and supplying their home with solar power. <

> Going organic is more than just a health craze, it’s a way of life – and more people are subscribing to it every day. The major benefits of living an organic life seem obvious: consume less toxins and genetically modified organisms (GMOs), have a cleaner, healthier body. But is that what’s really going on? Or are we falling victims to marketing by purchasing items labeled “organic”?
Perhaps one of the most popular miscon-ceptions is that the FDA is responsible for the truth behind organic claims. While the FDA certainly plays a role in product labeling, it’s the USDA that takes jurisdic-tion over certifying organic products. In order for the USDA to authorize a stamp of approval as truly “USDA Certified Or-ganic,” the products must meet the fol-lowing standards:
1. Produced without use of GMOs, radiation, or sewage sludge (yup, these are the words of the USDA. Makes you wonder…)
2. Produced per the National Allowed and Prohibited Substances list.
3. Overseen by a USDA National Organic Program authorized certifying agent.
These three little rules may seem bland at best, but their importance is emphasized when compared to non-organic produc-tion standards. And remember, certifying a product as organic is not the only step. The product needs to be packaged and labeled – this is where things can get con-fusing to the consumer. Take a look at the USDA’s categories of organic foods: 100% organic; organic; made with or-ganic ingredients; specific organic ingre-dients. Confusing, right? It shouldn’t be. Terms such as “confusing” or “mislead-ing” are adjectives the FDA works hard to avoid; product labels should clearly and honestly inform the consumer what it is purchasing. The FDA does its best, but oftentimes the labels are so misleading, the consumer has no idea what they are purchasing.

the roses”, release stress and get some

There are different aspects of aromather-
apy, the most important being medical
and holistic. The medical aspect involves
the use of essential oils which can as-
sist in wound healing, fever reduction,
skin problems, varicose veins, hay fever,
menstrual pains, digestive problems,
muscle aches, and so much more. On
the other hand, the holistic aspect fo-
cuses not only on the physical body, but
it also takes into consideration the mind
and spirit. Techniques that will help you
feel like new both physically and men-
tally, so why not start using it?
Although many people think the sense
of smell is not as important, it has been
proven to be just as powerful as the
other senses. So, surround yourself with
smells you like; buy flowers, aromatic
candles, your favorite perfume, and just
start breathing a better, tranquil you.
TASTE
The sense of taste is connected in a
way to the sense of smell. When you
are going to eat something, you first
smell it and then you can get an idea if
you’ll like it or not. It’s a good idea to
eat healthy, so have some colorful fruits
& vegetables, add a handful of nuts, as
these will benefit your body and make
you feel more energized during the day.
Nowadays, breakfast, lunch, and dinner
have become an activity that is done on
the go. It is important to take the time
to enjoy your meal, notice its flavors and
textures, and also notice how you feel
after eating. Eat more of the things that
make you feel good, and avoid foods
that might taste good but make you feel
down. They say you can change your
taste buds in as little as 3 weeks. So,
perhaps you’ll start enjoying the more
healthful foods such as fruits rather than
‘junky’ sweets.
HEARING
Studies have shown that listening to mu-
sic could decrease heart rate and blood
pressure. We are bombarded with noise
everywhere we go and this might be one
that is the cause of your stress.
Listening to half an hour of music each
day may significantly lower your blood
pressure. Try to find the time to listen
to some soothing music and just relax.
Start practicing meditation, put on a
nice, relaxing melody and just sit back
and close your eyes and think about all
the things that make you feel good, or
try to not think at all. This practice will
make you feel lighter and will allow you
to concentrate more during the day.
Another good practice is to listen to
your favorite music while you exercise.
Listening to music while you exercise can
help you last longer, be less bored, and
allows you to actually enjoy the activ-
ity. So make a playlist with all your fa-
vorite tunes and start losing those extra
pounds.
TOUCH
Being able to touch and feel can bring
a lot of satisfaction to your life. Just
think about how you feel when you hug
someone you love; it is an indescribable
feeling that makes you feel so good that
sometimes you don’t even want to let
go. The reason you feel this good is be-
cause the human touch releases endor-
phins which can physically help reduce
blood pressure, stress, and anxiety, they
can also boost your immune system, and
best of all they can slow down much of
the aging process. So go ahead, give
that someone special a great big hug!
Also, treat yourself to a nice relaxing day
either at home or at a spa, take a bubble
bath, exfoliate your skin, get a massage,
and just enjoy how your body reacts to
all this pampering. Taking care of your-
self will heal your mind, body, and spirit,
help you gain self-confidence, and you’ll
be glowing too.
Use all your senses to your advantage.
Get out of that same old routine and
don’t be afraid of trying new things; be
more curious and get to know yourself
on a deeper level. Life can get hectic at
times, but with the help of our senses we
can become better versions of ourselves.

> We all walk into the bar and usually order our regular cocktail without thinking twice. No matter what your elixir of choice is you know what you drink and what it tastes like. What if I told you the glass that holds your spirit preference makes a difference to your experience? Would that make you pay attention to what vessel you sip from the next time you are at your favorite watering hole? I promise you will appreciate your bartender who knows what glass to use even more the next time you belly up to the bar.
Most of us have a go to cocktail when we go out to a bar or restaurant. No matter where you are in the world your cocktail should conform to the glass in your hand. Vodka and soda is your choice; a rocks glass is placed in front of you without a second thought from you. A mojito is served in a tall glass with a straw and the ever-present mint and lime mingling together among the ice. A snifter gets pulled out after a dinner party for cognac and the like. But have you ever wondered why? There is a method to the madness that we would usually overlook. Most bars will serve a cocktail or liquor in a few glasses that should be found in all bars universally. You have the all-purpose rocks glass aka Old Fashioned or double Old Fashioned glass. There is also the Collins glass, snifter, martini and the list goes on.
I want to focus on the glassware you find most often in the bar, the rocks glass. Whether you realize it or not this glass helps accentuate the flavors that make you cherish the drink that sits in front of you. A single liquor drink on the rocks, with muddled fruit, bitters or a mixer is the classic drink that ends up in this style of glass. A usually short and wide brim allows you to take in the aromas and flavors that are mixed within. This style of glass affects both your taste and your sense of smell in a positive way. It is my favorite glass because it serves as the bartenders’ multi-tool behind the bar.
If you want your whiskey neat this is the glass I would use to highlight the flavor and style of the spirit. The size and shape allows the spirit to open up and reveal the magic and hard work that went into creating something meant to please. The Old Fashioned cocktail is proof that this type of glass is the perfect choice so much that it is usually called an Old Fashioned glass. The classic Old Fashioned features not only your favorite whiskey but the addition of bitters, sugar and finished with a cherry and orange slice. Take a sip of one of these and you understand why it earned the right to have its moniker attached to a style of glassware. The whiskey and bitters open up and meld nicely on that first taste while the cherry and orange tickle your nose like a fruit filled feather floating up from the glass. If this was in a
Collins glass, tall and thin, it would lose something without question. It might seem like a little thing but these little nuances add up to build a great cocktail experience.
Cocktails that contain a single liquor and mixer on the rocks are most often found in this type of glass as well. The same reasoning applies as the wide style of the glass allows the liquid within to become a harmonious blend that pleases our senses and usually ends up in the classic saying, “Bartender, hit me again.” One of the trends that is a perfect fit for the rocks glass is a large sphere of ice usually surrounded by bourbon or scotch. This glass allows the igloo size chunk of ice to slowly melt and let the chosen liquor in the rocks glass be the star.
I would be willing to bet that most of us do not even give it a second thought when it comes to which type of glass ends up in front of us or why. No matter how you prefer your cocktail be sure to know there was some thought in choosing the right glassware to fit the drink. There really is a reason behind the many shapes and sizes of the glassware that is awaiting the next cocktail behind the bar. Of those choices the rocks glass reigns supreme because of its versatility and ability to deliver and delight your senses in more ways than one. This is also why I award it “best in glass.” Cheers <

maybe cover up all the things in life that
aren’t so easy to fix. Looking good on the
outside can make you feel even better on
the inside, and who doesn’t want that?
3. What are your best tips for shopping
for different body types?
Patience is key! Don’t get discouraged
because you can’t wear the same brand
jeans your best friend can. Try and stay
focused and grab items that are your
size and will fit your shape. It may take
some time in the fitting room trying the
whole store on. I promise this will pay off.
Personal shoppers in the stores are also
free. Find an associate or ask to set up an
appointment. You never know, they could
find the perfect things you were never
able to find yourself.
4. Fill in the blank. I am the happiest when

I am the happiest when I am spending
time with my family, just laughing and
doing absolutely nothing. It’s all about
balance. Family is so important to me.

thinking directly impacted your body and

I have learned that no one can give you
happiness. You have to find that within
yourself first. There are going to be so
many challenges in life that come your
way and the only thing that will allow
ultimate happiness is positive thinking
and prayer. Life is not easy we all know
this. Keeping things simple and knowing
God has a plan is what keeps my body
and soul in check. I also practice a lot of
Yoga. Exercise is good for the body, mind
and soul.

I take great pride in delivering the news.
It’s an honor to keep the community
informed with what’s happening in their
neighborhood. The news isn’t always
positive and that’s why it’s even more
important to maintain an optimistic
attitude. As a news anchor you strive to
tell great stories and connect with the
viewers. To do that successfully I think a
positive attitude is part of the job.
2. How does looking the part affect your
career?
For me, it’s all about how I feel on the
inside! If I’m well rested and made it to
my yoga class, I’m on top of the world!
When it comes to wardrobe, I pick my
outfit the night before, because when
my alarm clock goes off at 2:45 a.m. my
fashion sense is still on snooze! I would be
lost without my hair stylist and hot rollers.
3. What are your tips for living a happier
lifestyle?
Make the most of each day, don’t sweat
the small stuff, and be forgiving of yourself
and others.
4. How has fashion played a role in
changing your mood?
My mom is my secret stylist, I guess
the secrets out! She knows I like to feel
confident and comfortable in my work
attire! I always feel good in a sharp suit,
stylish dress and even my shabby chic
favorites.

always feel better after a new haircut,
outfit, and pair of shoes. Change is always
good, everyone needs to freshen up their

Lab.
There have been many gratifying
moments over the last 7 years at Ego Lab.
We have participated in many events, and
also held many events at Ego lab. As far
as self-gratifying I would say every time
someone leaves the store excited about
their purchase or service I am happy.

I have to be 100% honest I am most
happy when I am writing a new song. It is
a completely spiritual thing for me.

For me learning to be in the moment
is very challenging, my mind is always

can only be found in the moments where
you are fully engaged in the now. We all
need to remind ourselves on a daily basis

So when I heard of Privé Salon’s newest addition, a hair care mira-cle, I set out to experience it for myself.

Your cappuccino, or a glass of wine, is waiting for you to enjoy while your team works its magic.
Your stylist infuses two unique elements: Pearls that are immersed in seawater and a cream rich in nourishing essentials.

Today I’m going to discuss bad breath; also called halitosis which can be down-right embarrassing. According to dental studies, about 85% of people with con-stant bad breath have a dental condition that is the blame. Gum disease, cavities, oral cancer, dry mouth, and bacteria on the tongue all can cause bad breath. Also; medical conditions can cause bad breath. Ketoacidosis occurs in diabetics when there is insufficient glucose in the blood for the body to use as energy. An obvious sign of this is a fruity-smelling odor in the breath. People with eating disorders may experience bad breath,
as well as frequent dieters. Breath will have a fishy smell or smell of urine or ammonia in people with chronic kidney failure. Sinusitis, which is very prevalent here in Florida, can cause bad breath. So you can see there are various conditions that can contribute to bad breath. Us-ing mouthwash to cover up bad breath only masks the odor and does not cure the problem. So how do I know I have bad breath? Here’s a simple technique; lick the back of your hand, let it dry and smell that.
The following guidelines will help you eliminate or reduce your bad breath :
1. Brush your teeth and floss everyday; especially after meals that may contain food or spices that contribute to bad breath. Brushing your tongue will help in getting rid of bacteria that can get trapped in the tiny hair-like fibers on the tongue.
2. Visit your dentist on a regular basis to insure there are no cavities or underlying gum disease.
3. An easy way to prevent bad breath is to chew parsley after a meal. Parsley contains chlorophyll, which happens to be a known breath freshener.
4. One can place a few drops of tee tree oil or peppermint oil on your tongue or a few drops on your toothbrush along with the toothpaste to freshened your breath.
5. Avoid foods that cause bad breath; garlic, onions, cabbage, certain spices, and coffee.
6. Smoking causes bad breath also so quitting has much more beneficial ef-fects than having better smelling breath.
7. Xerostomia or dry mouth is a major factor when it comes to bad breath. Sip water throughout the day and during meals. Chew sugar- free gum or dissolve sugar-free candy slowly in your mouth to increase saliva flow.
8. Avoid traditional mouthwashes. Most are loaded with alcohol which can cause dry mouth. These mouthwashes also cre-ate an environment that bacteria love.
9. Occasionally use a mixture of 50% hydrogen peroxide and 50% water as a mouth rinse. Hydrogen peroxide will help kill the bacteria that cause bad breath.
10. Finally the use of commercially marketed breath freshening kits and bad breath remedies may help prevent bad breath however there is insufficient research that has shown a cure for bad breath. Always ask your dentist or phar-macist before you invest in these prod-ucts.
I hope these simple suggestions will help you insure that your breath is pleasing and if not that it makes you aware that there could be an underlying problem. Remember not having pain does not mean there is no disease or pathology. If in doubt see your dental team. My best patient is the one I educate.

> Being under investigation for or charged with a crime is one of the great-est causes of stress and anxiety. Realizing that you may lose your liberty, as well as face public humiliation, causes stress that effects people in different ways. Loss of sleep, loss of productivity, loss of concen-tration and even thoughts of suicide are common examples of the effects of stress. In helping clients who must deal with the criminal justice system, I routinely discuss the impact stress may have on daily life. Recognizing that stress is a normal con-sequence of facing criminal charges is a first step in dealing with the stress. While most people have a certain amount of stress in their lives, few have had to deal with the extreme stress caused by a crimi-nal case. I have observed, both men and women, break down and cry in my office. They will call complaining of lack of sleep and inability to function. I believe it is im-
portant for an attorney to let clients know that what they are experiencing is to be expected, under the circumstances. Help in coping with the stress caused by a criminal case can take many forms. Open communication between attorney and cli-ent can relieve stress by answering ques-tions, explaining procedures, and under-standing the legal case. Reaching out to a spouse or family member may also be helpful. Many also benefit from talking with clergy or counseling with health care professionals. It is important to realize that help, both legal, psychological and emotional, is available and important. <

Gulden explains, “it never made any
sense to me that people defend or
excuse unsafe medical care, because if
this care is allowed to continue, then it
leads to more suffering.”

> When it comes to health care, John Leighton is passionate. “Patients get treated like second class citizens.” Leighton has seen so many cases of medical mistakes, so little regulation, and so many restrictions on patients’ rights, that it drives him harder than ever to represent victims of medical malpractice.
Leighton, an accomplished board certi-fied trial lawyer, handles malpractice cas-es throughout Florida but his reputation spans beyond the state, having been hired by families in Texas and Illinois to try malpractice cases there as well. In one, a hospital failed to promptly treat a woman who had a fluid build-up in her brain, causing her death. Leighton handled the case in Chicago and recov-ered $4.3 million for her family. In Texas he obtained $1 million for the victim of a botched weight loss surgery. Another of his Central Florida clients had a wrong leg surgery by a surgeon who had just made the same mistake on another pa-tient a year earlier.
In a record-setting case here, Leighton represented an Altamonte Springs girl who sustained brain damage at birth from a botched delivery. After years of delays and numerous appeals, Leighton convinced a Sanford jury to award $24 million in what was the largest malpractice verdict in Seminole county history. Recently he recovered $9 million for a woman who suffered brain damage from an anesthesia mistake and two years ago he won a $24 million wrongful death verdict in Orange County.
Leighton is most concerned by studies which show that medical errors are killing 200,000 to 400,000 people a year in America. To demonstrate the point, he recently published an article about why people are safer on a highway filled with drunk drivers than in a hospital.
15 years ago Leighton and a dozen of the nation’s top medical malpractice lawyers formed the Cooperative Association of Medical Malpractice Attorneys. Leighton is the author of a 2 volume text and has written numerous book chapters and articles. He has lectured in over a dozen states, including, The Association of Trial Lawyers of America’s “Litigating Catastrophically Injured Infant Cases” and “Holding the Hospital Accountable” seminars. He recently spoke to a different group – an association of health underwriters. His topic: “Medical Malpractice - What You Don’t Know May Kill You.”
Leighton has been selected for Florida SuperLawyers (6 years as a top 100 SuperLawyer in Florida), Florida Trend magazine’s “Florida Legal Elite” and The Best Lawyers in America. He serves as the Chairman of the Academy of Trial Advocacy, a national invitation-only association of some of the nation’s leading catastrophic injury lawyers, and is on the Executive Committee of the National College of Advocacy. He received his law and undergraduate degrees with honors from the University of Florida. > Rafael “Ralph” Martinez has been selected as Orlando’s Best Medical Malpractice Lawyer. Mr. Martinez is a Shareholder/Partner at McEwan, Martinez & Dukes P.A. The firm was established in 1948, housed in the historic downtown McEwan building where medicine was practiced from 1918-1949.
Mr. Martinez has a very active litigation practice with heavy emphasis on medical malpractice defense. He has tried to verdict over 100 complex litigation cases in Products Liability and Medical Malpractice. In 2007-2008 Mr. Martinez spent more days in the courtroom trying cases than in his office. When asked what his favorite part of the trial was, he indicated Closing Argument—“I like to put it all together at the end.”
Tom Dukes, one of Mr. Martinez’ partners, said that Ralph has mentored many of Orlando’s finest medical negligence attorneys. The Orange County Bar Association has honored Mr. Martinez with the Bill Trickel Professionalism Award, a coveted recognition and lifetime achievement.
A Cuban refugee before he became a proud naturalized citizen, Mr. Martinez has lived the American dream. When he arrived in the U.S. at the age of 12 he did not speak English. He came as part of Operation Pedro Pan where 14,500 children escaped from Cuba without their parents at the height of the Cold War. He learned English, put himself through school, graduated from the University of Florida with a journalism degree, and obtained his Juris Doctor at Florida State University. Mr. Martinez said he was one of the few Gators happy with FSU winning this year’s BCS Championship!
Mr. Martinez was appointed by President George W. Bush and confirmed by the
U.S. Senate to serve as one of 10 voting delegates to the U.N. General Assembly in 2002 where he served for a year while maintaining an active litigation practice in Orlando. In 2008 he was appointed by President Bush and again confirmed by the U.S. Senate as a commissioner of the U.S. Dept of Justice Foreign Claims Commission where he, in a non-adversarial manner, adjudicated claims of U.S. citizens against foreign countries. In the claims against Libya he adjudicated over $300 million of compensation to victims of 11 terrorist acts sponsored by Libya in the previous 30 years.
Mr. Martinez lectured at the 2005 College for the Judiciary on the subject of Medical Malpractice and in 1996 at the Florida Conference of Circuit Judges on the same subject. He has taught at the prestigious IADC (International Association of Defense Counsel) Trial Academy at Stanford University and the Florida Trial Academy at the University of Florida. He served on the Valencia Community College Board of Directors for 8 years and the Board of Trustees of the University of Richmond for 4 years. When asked about running for office, he said no—he would leave that to brother Mel and nephew John!
Mr. Martinez is very involved in community activities including the Central Florida Fair and the Central Florida YMCA where he served as Chairman of the Metropolitan Board of Directors and is active on the Camp Wewa and Metro Board. He also serves on the CNL Bank Board.

> Pat Telan is an enthusiastic and competitive attorney who represents hospitals, physicians, businesses, health care workers and individuals in a variety of litigation matters. Born to a Filipino father who worked tirelessly to become a successful physician after leaving the U.S. Army, Pat learned the meaning of courage and hard work. As one of four children born to a first generation, Irish, coal-miner’s daughter from Scranton, Pennsylvania, Patrick learned from his mother that a fulfilled life is one rich in family and friends, not in material possessions. Pat has merged his parent’s philosophies and strengths into his own, which he brings to each and every client he represents.
After graduating from the University of Florida with Honors with a degree in Economics and a minor in Spanish, Pat enrolled in law school at Stetson University College of Law. He was a member of the nationally recognized Moot Court Team and was selected as Outstanding Advocate in his final year of law school.
Shortly after his graduation from law school in 1992, Pat joined what is now the Grower, Ketcham, Eide, Telan and Meltz law firm. Pat credits much of his development to Mason Grower, one of the firm’s founding senior partners, who trusted him and believed in him. Now, as an owner and one of the senior litigators at Grower, Ketcham, Pat seeks to mentor and develop some of the firm’s young lawyers. Over the past 10 years, the firm has been able to grow and has also become more diverse in its lines of business.
As a trial lawyer, Pat has litigated cases across the Southeast U.S. in both Federal
and State Courts over the past 22 years. He devotes a significant amount of his professional time to the representation and defense of Hospital clients, Physician Groups and individual Health Care Providers involved in litigation and in administrative proceedings. Over the past 15 years, Pat has also developed a thriving practice in Trucking litigation, Civil Rights litigation, Environmental litigation and Commercial litigation.
Pat is a member of the U.S. District Court for the Southern, Northern and Middle District of Florida. He is also a member of the Eleventh Circuit Court of Appeals of the United States. He has litigated cases against some of the largest plaintiff’s law firms in the U.S. and also against some of the largest defense firms in the South. He prides himself on always doing what is best for his client and is always mindful of the financial, mental and emotional impact that litigation has on his clients.
Pat has lectured locally and nationally on various subjects dealing with medical malpractice litigation, EMTALA laws and deposition preparation techniques. He holds an AV rating from Martindale Hubbell, a testament to the fact that his peers rate him at the highest level of ethical and professional excellence.
Outside of work, Pat is a devoted father to Kyle (18) and Abby Ann (15) and loving husband to his high school sweetheart and wife of 22 years, Kirsten. He is a “foodie” who enjoys adventure travel, physical fitness and all of the outdoor benefits that our wonderful weather in Florida allows. <Patrick H. Telan
