History

– the 1950s: Bernanose first observed EL in organic material

– 1960: Martin Pope and co-workers developedohmic dark-injecting electrode contacts to organic crystals

– 1965: W. Helfrich and W. G. Schneider produced double injection recombination electroluminescence

– the same year, Dow Chemical researchers patented a method of preparing electroluminescent cells

– Roger Partridge made the first observation of electroluminescence from polymer films (patented 1975 and published 1983)

– 1987: Ching W. Tang and Steven Van Slyke reported the first OLED device

Advantages of OLEDs

Anne-Marie Engeler OLED‘s 22.06.2016

• Higher contrast – no backlight needed• Low weight and thickness• Better viewing angle possible- direkt emmitting• Faster response time• Lower energy

• Furture: lower prize because OLEDS can be printed

12

Disadvantages / Problems

Anne-Marie Engeler OLED‘s 22.06.2016

• Expensive• Lifespan• Bad coulor banance, because of blue emmitters• Damaging by water and air• materials for flexible displays
