WEEK 2: The Faithful God of Abraham September 11, 2014
The LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. – Genesis 6:5-‐6 ESV
God created the world and He declared all that He had made, “good.” But something happened. Sin entered into the scene, shattering the shalom. At the core of the sin of Adam and Eve was their disbelief in the word of God and in His faithfulness. They refused to take Him at His word and listened to the lies of the enemy instead. But in spite of the unfaithfulness of Adam and Eve, God proved to be faithful – a characteristic of His nature that shows up throughout the pages of Scripture from beginning to end. Take Notes (Teaching):
As you listen to today’s lesson, write down anything significant that you hear. Be ready to share them with the men at your table during the discussion time.

• Take Part (Discussion): Sometimes God has a way of speaking through others as they provide insights or different applications from the lessons. As you discuss around your table, write down anything you hear that makes an impact on you. Or if you hear another man share a struggle or concern, write it down so that you can pray for him during the week.
• Take Time (Prayer):
Be sure and leave a few minutes for the sharing of prayer requests. Remember, keep your requests short and sweet. Don’t let the details bog you down. We don’t have to understand all that is going on to pray effectively.

Homework for week 3 To get ready for next week, spend some time preparing.
Read Judges 17:6, 18:1, 19:1 and 21:25 Why do you think God chooses to use this statement over and over again in reference to the nation of Israel? What is He saying about His people? What would it look like for us to do what is right in our own eyes (see 2 Timothy 3:1-‐5 for help)?
Read Deuteronomy 31:27,29 and Joshua 24:19-‐20 What do Moses and Joshua seem to know about the people of Israel? What does Joshua know about God?
Why do these two realities present a serious problem for the people of Israel?
Read Deuteronomy 9:1-‐3 What had God commanded the people of Israel to do and what had He promised to do on their behalf? Now read the following passages and write down what you discover about the various tribes of Israel: • Judges 1:19 • Judges 1:21 • Judges 1:27 • Judges 1:29 • Judges 1:31 • Judges 1:33 Read Judges 2:1-‐3 What does God have to say about the people of Israel, and what does He threaten to do as a result?

Read Judges 3:7-‐11 There is a cycle in these verses that is repeated throughout the book of Judges. Write down what you think are the key elements of that cycle:
Read the following quote: The purpose of the book of Judges is to reveal how God uses those around us to test his people to see if we truly do love him as we have proclaimed, or will we play the harlot with the gods (religions) and people of our homelands, and become like them. – Raymond Anderegg, The Story of God As Revealed in the Holy Bible For All Mankind Would you say that this quote illustrates a reality in your own life? If so, how? Read 1 Samuel 2:12-‐17 This story covers the end of the period of the judges. There was no king in Israel and everyone did what was right in their own eyes. According to these verses what did the sons of Eli, who were both priests, do that reflected that they too were doing what was right in their own eyes? Now read 1 Samuel 2:22-‐25 What further insight do you gain from the lives of the two young men in these verses? Finally, read 1 Samuel 4 What did the Israelites do with the Ark of the Covenant and what does it reveal about how they viewed God and this sacred icon of Israel? What happened to the Ark? What happened to the two son of Eli? What happened to Eli? How does the widow of one of Eli’s sons describe the condition of Israel in verses 21-‐22 of chapter 4?

WEEK 2 The Faithful God of Abraham Your faithfulness endures to all generations; you have established the earth, and it stands fast. – Psalm 119:90 ESV • The Faithfulness of God
Creation -‐ God’s faithfulness in creation (Genesis 1:1-‐2)
-‐ He created everything -‐ Wholeness out of brokenness -‐ Order out of confusion -‐ Perfection out of chaos
-‐ What the universe could not do for itself, God did -‐ God took the initiative – THIS IS HUGE! -‐ He is always the initiator in this story -‐ It is He who creates, calls, chooses, loves, invites, forgives, redeems, and restores
The Fall -‐ The shalom was shattered -‐ Man sinned (Genesis 3:6-‐7) -‐ And man’s sin would have serious consequences
The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved him to his heart. – Genesis 6:5-‐6 ESV Genesis, the first book in the story of God’s interactions with and plan for mankind, provides us with an amazing starting point. The first two chapters of this book – familiar to most of us – describe how God created the heavens and the earth, and all that is contained within them. But creation is only the subplot of this book. The real plot of Genesis is so amazing it’s almost unbelievable: God wants to be with us. The God of the universe has created a place to come down and be with a community of people. – Randy Frazee, The Heart of the Story
The Flood -‐ Rather than express gratitude to God for His faithfulness, mankind disobeyed and rejected His
will for their lives

So the Lord said, “I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the land, man and animals and creeping things and birds of the heavens, for I am sorry that I have made them.” – Genesis 6:7 ESV
-‐ But He also determined to extend grace and preserve a remnant -‐ He chose to show mercy when none was deserved
But Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord. – Genesis 6:8 ESV
-‐ God faithfully spared Noah and made a covenant with him
The Call -‐ God chooses Abraham (Genesis 12:1-‐3)
-‐ Not based on performance (Deuteronomy 7:7-‐8) -‐ He was undeserving of God’s mercy and grace -‐ God’s choosing preceded Abram’s following
-‐ God’s faithful plan (Exodus 1:5-‐7)
The Exile Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph. And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of Israel are too many and too mighty for us. Come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and, if war breaks out, they join our enemies and fight against us and escape from the land.” – Exodus 2:8-‐10 ESV -‐ God heard. God remembered. God knew. (Exodus 2:23-‐25) -‐ God intercedes and raises up a deliverer (Exodus 3:7-‐8, 10)
The Exodus -‐ He miraculously delivered them from captivity -‐ Not because they deserved it -‐ But in faithfulness to His promise to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob The Law -‐ For 40 years, God faithfully led His people through the wilderness -‐ He gave them His Law -‐ He provided the Tabernacle and the sacrificial system -‐ He assured them of His abiding presence and power
The Entry -‐ God fulfilled His promise and got them into the land -‐ Not because they deserved it (Deuteronomy 9:5-‐6)
The End -‐ God did His part by establishing them in the land (Joshua 24:13) -‐ He gave them victories over their enemies -‐ But the book of Joshua ends with a warning (Joshua 24:14-‐15)
The Falling Away -‐ How would the people respond to God’s faithfulness? -‐ Unfaithfulness (Judges 2:11-‐14)
The Hebrew expression “find favor [in the eyes of]” is an idiom meaning “to be an object of another’s favorable disposition or action,” “to be a recipient of another’s favor, kindness, mercy.” – NET BIBLE study notes
