Training is an integral part of all BSA activities. While Merit Badge Counselor training is not online, Portola District has scheduled an additional last minute training session for Merit Badge Counselors.
Jan 31st 7 -9 PM Brea Scout Center - The training is good for 3 years. In order to be a counselor in 2017, all counselors must complete the training. Please contact PortolaAdvancement@gmail.com to sign up for any of the above sessions.

Camporee is April 21 - April 23 at Firestone Scout Reservation. Documents and information can be found here: http://portola.ocscouter.org. Documents are being reviewed and updated frequently so check often.
Camporee patch design entries are due by the January Roundtable. They can also be emailed to either: claymoh@aol.com or caphethean@yahoo.com. The winning designer will have his Camporee fee paid. If an adult wins,
that adult will need to designate a youth to sponsor. Details are on the Website.
Please let Bill Scarberry know about your unit’s summer plans, i.e. Scout camps, high adventure activities, Cub Resident camp, and Cub Day Camp: sb6065@gmail.com.
Also please advise if any unit wants detailed information about any Scout camp in the western USA, national high adventure bases, or specifics about Cub Resident camp and Day Camp.
We would like input from the Troops about whether to keep rifle / archery as a contest event or just as an optional fun event.
We will be collecting information from all units about your 2017 summer plans during December and January. Please let us know if you would like information about Cub Day Camp, Cub Resident Camp, or any Scout camps in the western US.

Journey to Excellence - District Performance Each standard in the Journey to Excellence lays the foundation for delivering a quality program to youth. It is a road map to assist units in being successful.
As a member of the district, you have a direct responsibility in helping units succeed in achieving their Journey to Excellence as well as meeting criteria for your district. This training will not only help you understand your role on the District committee, but it will give you the tools and resources necessary to be successful in your own position.
Recognition Participants may wear a "Trained" patch for completing this course, and fulfills the training requirement for the District Committee Knot.

Portola Camporee 2017
2017 Theme: STAR WARS
2017 Portola Camporee Patch Design Contest
The Portola District is holding its annual patch design contest for Camporee. The contest is open to all youth and adults. The winning youth patch designer will get to attend the camporee free of charge or if an adult will be given credit for one youth participant.
Patch Design Guidelines
Encompasses the theme: STAR WARS Has either BSA or the fleur-‐de-‐lis Has the words Portola District and Camporee 2017 on the patch
o Usually around the edge, but anywhere is fine Has the words “STAR WARS” on the patch
o Usually around the edge, but anywhere is fine No words or designs that the BSA would consider, at its sole discretion, to reflect poorly on the values of the BSA or that it would deem offensive to the BSA and/or its members
No More than a 4” round or square design No more than nine colors
o Note: Darker colors on lighter show up better for details o Note: Thread size will blur / distort very fine detail

Ten Commandment Hike Saturday January 14, 2017 Downtown Chapel

The 10 Commandment hike is a wonderful way for Scouts of any and all faiths to grow in their
understanding of what it means to be reverent. This is a fun, interactive, outdoor experience for
the entire family.
Be sure to bring water for this pleasant hike and enjoy complimentary root beer floats at our
final stop, St. Angela Merici Catholic Church in Brea.
This event qualifies as an activity requirement for most Religious medal programs for all faiths
and rank advancement requirements. All participants receive a patch for their participation.
