What is a programmable room thermostat?

Aprogrammableroomthermostatisbothaprogrammerandaroomthermostat.Aprogrammerallowsyoutoset“On”and“Off”timeperiodstosuityourownlifestyle.Aroomthermostatworksbysensingtheairtemperature,switchingontheheatingwhentheairtemperaturefallsbelowthethermostatsetting,andswitchingitoffoncethissettemperaturehasbeenreached.

So,aprogrammableroomthermostatletsyouchoosewhattimesyouwanttheheatingtobeon,andwhattemperatureitshouldreachwhileitison.Itwillallowyoutoselectdifferenttemperaturesinyourhomeatdifferenttimesoftheday(anddaysoftheweek)tomeetyourparticularneeds.

Turningaprogrammableroomthermostattoahighersettingwillnotmaketheroomheatupanyfaster.Howquicklytheroomheatsupdependsonthedesignoftheheatingsystem,forexample,thesizeoftheboilerandradiators.

Neitherdoesthesettingaffecthowquicklytheroomcoolsdown.Turningaprogrammableroomthermostattoalower

settingwillresultintheroombeingcontrolledatalowertemperature,andsavesenergy.

Thewaytosetanduseyourprogrammableroomthermostat is to find the lowest temperature settings that youarecomfortablewithatthedifferenttimesyouhavechosen,andthenleaveitalonetodoitsjob.

The best way to do this is to set low temperatures first, say 18ºC,andthenturnthemupbyonedegreeeachdayuntilyouarecomfortablewiththetemperatures.Youwon’thavetoadjustthethermostatfurther.Anyadjustmentabovethesesettingwillwasteenergyandcostyoumoremoney.

Ifyourheatingsystemisaboilerwithradiators,therewillusuallybeonlyoneprogrammableroomthermostattocontrolthewholehouse.Butyoucanhavedifferenttemperaturesinindividualroomsbyinstallingthermostaticradiatorvalves(TRVs)onindividualradiators.Ifyoudon’thaveTRVs,youshouldchooseatemperaturethatisreasonableforthewholehouse.IfyoudohaveTRVs,youcanchooseaslightlyhighersettingtomakesurethat

eventhecoldestroomiscomfortable,thenpreventanyoverheatinginotherroomsbyadjustingtheTRVs.Thetimeontheprogrammermustbecorrect.SometypeshavetobeadjustedinspringandautumnatthechangesbetweenGreenwichMeanTimeandBritishSummerTime.

Youmaybeabletotemporarilyadjusttheheatingprogramme,forexample,“Override”,“Advance”or“Boost”.Theseareexplainedinthemanufacturer’sinstructions.

Programmable room thermostats need a free flow of air tosensethetemperature,sotheymustnotbecoveredby curtains or blocked by furniture. Nearby electric fires, televisions,wallortablelampsmaypreventthethermostatfromworkingproperly.

InstallationThe thermostat is designed to be flush mount, a back boxof35mmshouldhavebeensunkinthewallpriortoinstallation.

Step1Carefullyseparatethefronthalfofthethermostatfromtheback plate by placing a small flat head terminal driver in to theslotsonthebottomfaceofthethermostat.

Step2Carefullyunplugtheribbonconnectorwhichispluggedintothefronthalfofthethermostat.

Placethethermostatfronthalfsomewheresafe.Terminatethethermostatasshowninthediagramsatthebackofthisbooklet.

Screwthethermostatbackplateontothebackbox.

Step3Re-connectthethermostatribboncableandclipthetwohalvestogether.

Comfort Levels Explained

Comfortlevelsallowyoutosetdifferenttemperaturesthroughouttheday.Forexample,youmaywantthehomewarminthemorningwhenyouaregettingreadyforwork,coolerduringthedaywhenthehouseisunoccupiedandthenwarmerintheeveningwhenyouarehomerelaxing.Thethermostatoffers5/2DayProgramming(4levelsfortheweekday,4fortheweekend)and7dayProgramming(4levelsforeachday).Seepages17-22fordetailsonhowtoswitchbetweenthesemodes.

Tip!Ifyoudon’twanttouseallofthecomfortlevels,justsetthetimeto--.—andthethermostatwillignorethissetting.

Changing the Comfort Levels

Locking the Keypad

Thethermostathasakeylockfacility.Toenablethispressthebottomrightcornerofthedisplayandholdfor10seconds.

Whenactivated,youwillsee.Tocancel,repeatthestepsabove.

Temperature Override

Usingthekeysallowsyoutoadjustthesettemperature.Whenyoupresseitherofthesekeys,youwillseethewordSETandthedesiredtemperature.PressDonetoaccept.

Note:Youshouldnotethatthisnewtemperatureismaintainedonlyuntilthenextprogrammedcomfortlevel.Atthistime,thethermostatwillrevertbacktotheprogrammedlevels.

Temperature HoldTheTemperatureHoldfunctionisidealforpartiesorwhenyouwillbegoingoutforanumberofhours.Itallowsyoutoholdatemperatureforadesiredperiod.

HolidayTheHolidayfunctionreducesthesettemperatureinyourhometothefrosttemperaturesetting.Thethermostatwillmaintainthistemperatureforthedurationoftheholidayandwillthenautomaticallyreturntotheprogrammodeonyourreturn.

AssumeyouprogramaholidayonMondayfor1day,theholidaywillstartimmediately,butthethermostatwillcountthenextday(Tuesday)astheholiday.ThethermostatwillthenrevertbacktoitsprogramatMidnightTuesday.

• PressHOLIDAY.• Enterthedurationofyourholiday.• PressDone.• TocancelaHoliday,reducetheHolidaytimeto00days.

TheHolidayfunctionworksindependentlyforeachzone.

Heat On / Off

Frost Protect Mode:PressingtheOffbuttononcewillplacethethermostatinfrostprotectmode.Inthismode,thethermostatwilldisplaythefrosticonandwillonlyturntheheatingonshouldtheroomtemperaturedropbelowthesetfrosttemperature(seepages17-22).Shouldtheheatingbe turned on whilst in frost mode, the flame symbol will be displayed.Tocancelthefrostprotectmode,presstheOnbutton.

Thermostat Off:Toturnthethermostatoffcompletely,pressandholdtheOffbutton.Thedisplayandheatingoutputwillbeturnedoff.Toturnthethermostatbackon,presstheOnbutton.

Clean Screen

PressingCleanScreenwilldisableallbuttons,allowingyou15secondstowipethescreenclean.

Factory ResetWhenthethermostatison,pressandholdtheSCREENbuttonfor10secondsandwhenyouseealltheiconsappear,presstheDONEbutton.Thescreenwillgoblank-thethermostathasbeenresetbacktothefactorydefaults.Pressthepowerbuttontoturnthethermostatbackon.

Re-calibrating the thermostatIfyouneedtore-calibratethethermostatfollowtheseinstructions:

1. PressandholdthePowerbuttontoturnthethermostatoff.

2. Selectthezonetocalibrate.3. PressandholdthePowerbuttonuntilthetemperature

appearsonthescreen.4. Usetheup/downbuttonstosetthenewtemperature.4. PressDONEtoaccept.5. PressthePowerbuttononcetoturnthethermostatback

on.

Feature 01 – Temperature Format:Thisfunctionallowsyoutoselectbetween°Cor°F.

Feature 02 - Switching Differential:Thisfunctionallowsyoutoincreasetheswitchingdifferentialofthethermostat.Thedefaultis1°Cwhichmeansthethermostatwillswitchtheheatingon1°Cbelowthesettemperatureandwillturnitoffwhenthesettemperatureisachieved.Witha2°Cdifferential,theheatingwillswitchon2°Cbelowthesettemperatureandwillswitchoffwhenthesettemperatureisachieved.

Feature 03 - Frost Protect:Youcansetwhetherthethermostatwillmaintainthefrosttemperaturewhenthethermostatdisplayisturnedoff.Asadefault,thisisenabled.

Feature 04 – Frost Protect Temperature:Thisisthetemperaturemaintainedwhenthethermostatisinfrostmode.Therangeis07-17°C.Thedefaultis12°Candissuitableforalmostallapplications.

Feature 05 – Output Delay:Topreventrapidswitching,anoutputdelaycanbeentered.Thiscanbesetfrom00-15minutes.Thedefaultis00whichmeansthereisnodelay.

Feature 06 – Communication Address:Thissettingisusedwhenyouhaveconnectedyourthermostattoanetworksystem.Eachthermostatonthenetworkmusthaveauniquecommunicationaddress.Thiscanbesetfrom01-32.

Feature 07 – Temperature Up/Down Limit:Thisfunctionallowsyoutolimittheuseoftheupanddowntemperaturearrowkeys.Thislimitisalsoapplicablewhenthethermostatislockedandsoallowsyoutogiveotherslimitedcontrolovertheheatingsystem.

Feature 08 – Optimum Start:Optimumstartwillbringtheheatingonearlyifneeded,sothehouseiswarmwhenyouwakeup.Thismeansyoudon’tneedtoallowanyextraheatuptimewhenprogrammingthecomfortlevels.Thethermostatwillautomaticallylearntherequiredheatuptimeandwilladjustitself,ifrequired,throughouttheyear.

Feature 09 – Rate Of Change:Thisisthenumberofminutesthethermostathascalculatedittakestoraiseyourbuilding1°C.Thethermostatwillcontinuetolearntheheatuptimeofyourhomeandwilladjustthissettingtosuit.

Feature 10 – 5/2 Day 7 Day Programmable:Thisfunctionallowsyoutoswitchbetween5/2dayor7dayprogramming.5/2daymeansyoucanprogram4comfortlevelsfortheweekdayand4differentlevelsfortheweekend.7dayprogrammingallowsyoutoprogram4temperaturelevelsforeachdayoftheweek.

Adjusting the Optional Settings

• Usetheatthetopofthescreentoselectthefeaturenumber(shownonpages21-22).

• Asthisthermostatoperatestwozones,youshouldselectzoneoneorzonetwotosetuptheparametersforthatzone.

• Usetheinthecentretoadjustthesetting.

• PressDonetoacceptandStore.
