Colchester and Tendring OpenStudios is organised by Peter Jonesand the Open Studios Committeeand is made possible with supportand assistance from:

warren

Welcome to this very specialColchester and TendringOpen Studios

and the participation of local artists.

Now in its 20th year, I thought itwould be a good opportunity toreflect on how the event startedand name a few people who havehelped along the way and beenregular participants since itsinception in 1998.

In 1997 artists from both CuckooFarm Studios and Trinity StreetStudios under the auspices ofColchester Arts Forum cametogether with support fromColchester Borough Council and Eastern Arts (as it was then),Firstsite and Tendring DistrictCouncil to create an open studios event.

Using other open studios as amodel, it was agreed that it wasimportant to create a high qualitybrochure and map, although atthat time technology and financeonly allowed us to produce atwo-colour brochure. Workingclosely with designer Paul Warrenwe created a strong andprofessional image that has beenmaintained over the last 20 years.

The event was and remainsorganised by the artists, initiallywith financial and marketing helpfrom CBC and Firstsite. It nowstands on its own feet funded by theparticipating artists from the area.

People who need special thanksfor supporting Open Studios overthe years are: Anita Tebbit whowas the Arts manager at CBC andreally helped financially at thestart of this venture, KatherineWood who was the director ofFirstsite and gave lots of adviceand support, and Paul Warren whohas been a constant support forthe event and integral in itsdevelopment through his work inproducing and evolving the designof the brochure and maps everyyear since its inception. Also Iwould like to thank Ed Hughes ofHughes & Co Design who helpedget the OS web site up and running.

I would also like to list the artistswho where not only in the firstbrochure but have been mainstaysof the event and appear in thisyear’s event. Their names will nodoubt be familiar to fans ofOpen Studios:

Jane FrederickMike MiddletonDaphne SandhamMel KingJayne KnowlesSara BarkerElizabeth MorrisPam SchombergLisa Temple-Cox.

Finally, I would like to thank you,the visitors whose continuedsupport pushes us to keep theevent going. I hope you enjoy this year’s opportunity to meetboth regular and new participating artists.
