What this is & what this isn’tThis is:

• Sharing of information/facts

• Important information for RSCA, RTP, and instructional materials

• Providing you with the information you need

This isn’t

• My opinions/personal philosophies

• My time to tell you what to do

Open Says MeOpen Access in the Academy

…..And we care about this, why?

•Open Access (OA) has been around since before the web!

•Originators wanted to combat traditional publishing (and their prices / closed access)

• Libraryland has a long history with OA

So, if its been around since 1909, why are you here NOW?

• Hitting certain parts of our campus now

• Lack of basic information

• Lack of understanding of the topic

• Competing personal philosophies

• There is a dark underbelly

• Insert appropriate “oooooooh” sound here

• Need to get the word out

• ESPECIALLY as it relates to evaluations and RSCA

A recent (and extreme) example!

Screaming for StreamingStreaming Media & Teaching

So what’s the deal?• We want to stream media

• Media = videos and audio

• Videos = motion pictures, tv shows, commercials, educational videos, etc.

• Audio = musical pieces

• We want to take existing media (VHS, DVD, LP’s, CD’s) and transfer them to other media formats (VHS -> DVD, LP -> MP3)

AND / OR

• We want to convert traditional formats to streaming format to view via Beachboard

• We seem to want to do this regardless of the mode of instruction

So, what’s the problem?• None of these are easy to accomplish

• CANNOT just transfer formats of copyrighted materials (that’s piracy)

• CANNOT just stream copyrighted materials (unclear via copyright law)

• Lots and lots of due diligence required

• CSU wide issue

• Technology as well as policy problems

• HOWEVER…..

Help is on the way!

• CO finishing RFP process for software solution

•We are working on a policy solution

• I am working with faculty on a one-on-one basis with Lisa Moske to solve immediate issues

•Working with Lisa’s office to put into place training
