akademie der autodidakten presents: OPEN CALL: ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS MUSIC AND FILM PROJECT WITH GHAZI BARAKAT AND MOHAMEDALI LTAIEF For an experimental music and art project with the musician and composer Ghazi Barakat and the artist and performer Mohamed Ali Ltaief, we are looking for young Arab, PoC and post-migrant musicians, filmmakers, and art enthusiasts between the ages of 16 and 27 who are interested in and available for participating in ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS between April and 3rd of June. We are looking for people passionate about music, film, and art that would like play Arab and North African instruments including oud, tar, tabla and others, or produce artistic videos. They can be self-taught, beginners or advanced in their skills, everyone is welcome. Traditional as well as modern instruments can be brought along and played. Turntablists and DJs may also participate. People interested in video can use their own equipment. ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS is aimed at bringing together a group of diverse youth to compose an electronic & acoustic musical and visual artistic synthesis capturing the multiple facets of life in Berlin and lifelines beyond the city from the young participants’ perspectives. The compositions of sound and visuals developed for ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS will be brought onto the stage at Ballhaus Naunynstraße as an orchestral happening. The project is geared towards young individuals from diverse Arab and North African communities as well as new arrivals in Berlin with a background in music, but also creative youth who do not have a classical education in music.
Ghazi Barakat is a German-‐Palestinian sound artist and musician working in Berlin since 1986. He has been practicing as a musician in Germany, the US and France for many years and has worked as a curator, journalist, and editor in various countries. His experimental work is influenced by jazz, old rituals, science-‐fiction and neo-‐brutalist architecture. He is also known under the artistic pseudonym Pharoah Chromium among others. At Ballhaus Nauynstraße Ghazi Barakat composed and produced the soundtrack for the project OUT IN THE OPEN of akademie der autodidakten in January 2016.
Mohamedali Ltaief (Dali) is a visual artist and performer. He studied fine art and philosophy in Tunis. Ltaiefs work was presented and performed among others in "Maxxi, National Museum of the 21st Century Arts (Rome), Haus der Kulturen der Welt (Berlin), Santarcangelo dei teatri (Rimini), Black box Theater (Oslo), Biennale Spielart (Munich). In addition to other projects, Ltaief directed workshops for children, young people and refugees in Kasserine, Tunis; Abt (Festival des cinémas d'Afrique), Berlin.
ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS will additionally be accompanied by the musicians Omar Karray and Osman Arabi. Artists’ Statement: For ACCIDENTS & INCIDENTS we’re looking for people who own oriental instruments such as oud, tar, tabla and gimbre and/or can play them; people interested in sampling and turntablism; and people who would like to produce videos with us in this context. The object of our project is to bring about the ultimate acoustic accident by experimenting with musical coincidences. We break away from indifference, dismantling existing connections and creating something new. By tactical disintegration we integrate into an environment where we re-live situations and create a laboratory for overcoming the linear reality of our destinies. We concentrate on the contradictions, the background noises constituting our personal stories, and transfer these sounds into a personal and at the same time universal language. If human life is like a film, we’re inventing the soundtrack to go with it. We undertake musical field research with found objects, memories, and fragments of sound that whizz through the historic context like gunshots. Everyone wants to go to heave but no one wants to die. Where is paradise? Is there still room? Are you in? Is there a life before death? Is it worth risking one’s life and if so, what does that sound like? In combination with our music we will be producing a collage of video, visuals & text, which will accompany and contrast the presentation of our soundtrack. Aesthetically we are consciously taking up a position against the kitsch and frostiness of Berlin auto-orientalism, countering it with methods referencing the artistic movements Action Directe and Fluxus as well as our own anti-national imageries.
