ONETWOTHREEAUTOMATIONWITHNEWPARKERAUTOMATIONCONTROLLERTheOperationsManagerofasmallbutgrowingcontractmanufacturerofcosmeticsapproachedusataUtahbasedmanufacturingeventtoinquireaboutautomatinghislines.Hehadpreviouslymetwithacompetitorandwasnothappywithwhattheypresented.Themanufacturerproducescosmeticproductsforavarietyofcompanies.TheOMwasgiventhetaskto“leanout”theprocessatminimalcost.Priortoautomation,thecompanyhad14peopleworkingontheline.Thetasksneedingautomatingwasapickandplacebottlelinetomovebottlesfromoneconveyortoasecondconveyorwhereacodeisprintedontothebottle,andacapwasplacedonthebottle.Oursolutionperformedbothtasksandallowedthecontractmanufacturertodecreasepersonnelfrom14to7workers.OursystemfeaturesthenewEtherCATbasedParkerAutomationController(PAC),withParkerHMI,servodrives,motors,actuatorsandpneumaticsIn-PositionTechnologiesintegratedtheseParkercomponentstodeliveraturnkeysolutiontothecustomer.Thecustomerissopleasedwiththeprojectthattheyplantousetheprojecttolaunchaninhouseautomationteamtoduplicatethisdesigntobuildnumerousotherlines,allowingforthemtoimplementhighlycosteffectiveautomation.Futureprojectswillincludetheuseofvisionsystemstoinspectprintqualityand2Dbarcodes.Todate,thepickandplacelinewebuilthascappedmorethanamillionbottlesandpaidforitselfinless45days.Nowthat’sROI!
