PRELIMINARY ACTIVITIES:
A National Seminar on “Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods” was organized by the Department
of Food Processing and Preservation Technology, Faculty of Engineering, Avinashilingam
Institute for Home Science and Higher Education for Women, University, Coimbatore on
29.6.2017.
The information regarding the National Seminar was hosted in the University website.
Banners were put up on different places in Coimbatore.
The brochures were sent to various universities and colleges like
Karunya University, Coimbatore
Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathyamangalam.
Kongu Engineering College, Erode
PSG College of Arts and Science, Coimbatore
Periyar University, Salem
SRM University, Chennai
JCT College of Technology, Coimbatore
Sree Sakthi Institute of Engineering and Technology, Coimbatore
and many more.
Posters were invited on relevant topics to the seminar.
Chapters for Proceedings were invited.

REGISTRATION
The registration for outside participants was open from 9.00 am.
A total of 10 students had enrolled for the seminar.
The students were provided with a kit containing a notepad, pen, registration card
and the CD of the proceedings.
The students enrolled were from colleges like

Bannari Amman Institute of Technology, Sathy
Kongu Engineering College, Erode
WELCOME ADDRESS
The inauguration commenced with the prayer song by students of FPPT
department.
Dr.S.Maragatham, Dean, Faculty of Engineering, Avinashilingam University welcomed
the gathering and introduced the Chief Guest of the day Dr.R.K.Sharma,Director, DFRL,
Mysuru .

PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS
The Presidential Address was delivered by our Respected Chancellor,
Padmashri Dr.P.R.KrishnaKumar on the topic “Food as Medicines” that inspired the
students to ask questions.

GREETING THE GATHERING
Vice Chancellor of our University, Dr.Premavathy Vijayan, greeted the gathering and
deliberated about the importance and uses of Nutraceuticals and Functional foods.
Madam encouraged the students by sharing her experiences in the field of Food and
Nutrition.

ABOUT THE SEMINAR
Professor and Head of the Department of FPPT, Dr.M.Shakila Banu deliberated about the
objectives and scope of the seminar.
Dr.M.Shakila Banu, described that the Seminar aimed to bring together researchers and
students, working in academic Institutions, University Research Laboratories and
Industries, to a common platform, where they can interact and exchange information and
explore the recent developments in the area of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods. It
was emphasized that the Seminar would highlight the need for study of innovative
technologies in specific areas of Nutraceuticals and Functional Foods and their research
to discover future prospects.

INAUGURAL ADDRESS
The Inaugural address was delivered by the chief guest Dr.Rakesh Kumar
Sharma, Director, DFRL, Mysore on the topic “Nutraceuticals And
Functional Foods –Contributions by DFRL, Mysore”
He spoke about the main objectives of DFRL highlighting about the
different types of foods which included Designer foods also. He discussed
with us the global scenario, the Indian Market for nutraceuticals, its scope
and challenges and the problems faced by people due to these foods were
also discussed.
The functional foods at the R&D for soldiers were shared like
1. Beetroot juice as Vasodilator
2. Lettuce food bar for Anxiety
3. Aloe vera fruit spread etc.
He concluded the session by quoting Hippocrates “ Let food be thy medicine
and medicine be thy food”.

She expressed her gratitude towards the dignitaries for their presence that
graced the occasion.

TECHNICAL PRESENTATION I
The technical presentation was given by Dr.(Mrs) S.Kowsalya, Registrar,
Avinashilingam University
The presentation was about “NUTRACEUTICAL POTENTIALS OF
BLACK RICE AND SEA WEEDS.”
The different nutraceuticals that can be obtained from black rice and sea
weeds were a major topic during this session. Madam spoke with an
example of diabetes and the glycemic level.

TECHNICAL PRESENTATION II
The technical presentation was given by Dr. Amar Shankar, Assistant
Professor, Department of Food Technology, School of Engineering and
Technology, Jain University, Karnataka.
He presented on the topic “NUTRACEUTICALS AND NANO
MATERIALS”
He briefed on the introduction and objectives of nanotechnology and about
the Nano technology incorporated in herbal crops and in nutraceuticals.
He discussed about the future perspective and Nano technology in herbal
drugs uses various operations like spray drying, Nano encapsulation and
ultrasonification
Technical presentation and poster session evaluation was given by
Dr.Amar Shankar, Assistant Professor, Department of Food Technology,
School of Engineering and Technology, Jain University, Bengaluru.
POSTER PRESENTATION
The posters made by students were exhibited during this session.
The total numbers of six posters were presented
The posters were on the topics:
1. Food and Nutritional Science.
2. Role of Functional foods.
3. Food supplements in health.
4. Nutaceuticals in Food Technology.
5. Nano Encapsulation of Foods
The National Seminar was concluded with the poster presentation session.
