Celebrating Diversity through Independent FilmThroughout the year, WGBH creates and presents programs that reflect the many aspects of our shared history and humanity. During February, we join in the celebration of Black History Month. We are excited to feature the powerful work of several independent filmmakers whose documentaries we are proud to nurture locally and who are showcased nationally on the series Independent Lens.
Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Sam Pollard explores issues of race and identity in his American Masters documentary Sammy Davis, Jr.: I’ve Gotta Be Me (page 18), the biography of the Harlem-born performer and his struggle to reconcile his heritage with his “Rat Pack” fame.
Pollard began his career 30 years ago as a producer on the acclaimed series Eyes on the Prize II, presented on WGBH. In this new documentary, he peels away each complicated layer of Davis—as a performer, a rebel and a survivor—showing
both his strengths and his vulnerabilities through never-before-seen photo-graphs, personal anecdotes and scholarly analysis.
“I want audiences to know that Sammy Davis, Jr. was one of the greatest entertainers in the 20th century and to recognize how talented he was as a dancer, singer, impressionist, musician and actor,” Pollard says. “Even with all that talent and success, he could never escape the slings and arrows of being a black man in America.”
We’re pleased that a film by WGBH’s former Filmmaker-in-Residence Chico Colvard is part of this month’s lineup on Independent Lens. His documen-tary Black Memorabilia, (page 9), which was featured in the Roxbury International Film Festival, examines the subculture around the collectibles that serve as reminders of America’s troubled racial history. Now teaching at MassArt, Colvard observes people from China to Brooklyn who still reproduce, consume and reclaim these racially charged objects.
Also on the Independent Lens docket is Hale County This Morning, This Evening (page 14) by director RaMell Ross. This 2018 Sundance award-winning film offers an intimate look at the lives of two young men over five years in today’s rural Alabama. A former artist-in-residence at the MIT Media Lab, Ross shows his innovation in filmmaking by abandoning traditional narratives and adopting collage-like visual storytelling that transcends everyday moments.
And this month we pay tribute to children’s television pioneer Fred Rogers with a special showing of Won’t You Be My Neighbor? (page 12). A minister and a compassionate voice for generations of children, Mr. Rogers embraced the meaning of “neighbor” in the deepest sense. More than 50 years ago, he created Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood to empower children to recognize their own value and to do the same for others. We are fortunate that Independent Lens was able to bring this top-grossing biographical documentary to public television for one night for us all to experience.
At WGBH, we are grateful for the diversity of voices that enrich our world and for the independent filmmakers who bring us their stories. We appreciate your support in helping us give them a platform to be heard.

Living under the SeaIn February 1969, off the shore of California, a US Navy crane lowered 300 tons of metal into the Pacific Ocean. Known as the Sealab project, it was the brainchild of a naval pioneer who
dreamed of pushing the limits of ocean exploration. This film tells the little known story of this daring program that tested the limits of human endurance and revolution-ized the way humans see the sea. American Experience/SealabTue, 2/5 at 9pm on WGBH 2

The Power of PicturesTwenty-five years since the genocide against the Tutsi, many Rwandans remember their loved ones through random images: a passport photo, a pic-ture on an ID card or a casual family snapshot taken at a wedding or baptism.
With so much destruction, the surviving pictures are precious objects. Some people have only a solitary photograph of their loved ones, and many have none at all. This documentary honors the treasured images of lives lost and the undying love of family and friends left behind.AfroPoP/ The Faces We LostMon, 2/4 at 8pm

A Place of Their OwnAmong the untold stories in American history was the effort to make Oklahoma and territories like it all-black states. Although segregated states never materialized, dozens of independent all-black towns formed, and many residents within them thrived. Today, only a few of these towns remain. Many have dwindling populations and are barely hanging on. This documentary shares the stories of the last-remaining residents and their heroic attempts to save the independence, character and future of the places they call home.America ReFramed/Struggle & HopeTue, 2/19 at 8pm
Still Marching for Racial EquityOn Oct. 22, 1963, more than 250,000 students boycotted the Chicago Public Schools to protest racial segregation. Many marched through the city calling for the resignation of School Superintendent Benjamin Willis, who placed trailers on playgrounds and parking lots of overcrowded black schools rather than let black students enroll in nearby white schools. Blending unseen
16mm footage of the march with the participants’ reflections today, this World Channel exclusive connects the story of one of the largest civil rights demonstra-tions in the North to contemporary issues around race, education and youth activism.Local, USA /’63 BoycottMon, 2/25 at 9pm

WGBH News investigated how members of the lowest Indian caste, called Dalit, have experienced limited job, marriage, housing and educational pros-pects in the United States. This prejudicial treatment
often comes at the hands of more privileged Indian immigrants. The problem is compounded by a lack of specific protections in the United States.
“By working with reporters and producers from The World, WGBH News was able to bring international attention to this unique problem,” Schachter said. “We’ve found that our audience is acutely interested in issues of equality and discrimination,” he said. “While casteism effects only Ωa niche component of our audience, the issues arising from this form of discrimination are relevant to everyone.”

Smooth SaxNicknamed by a teacher annoyed that he memorized music instead of reading it, David “Fathead” Newman distinguished himself as a key member in Ray Charles’ bands. The sought-after saxophonist famously collaborated with an array of top artists, including Hank Crawford, B.B. King and Dr. John. Host Eric Jackson pays tribute to the smooth sounds of this jazz legend on the anniversary of his birth.Sun, 2/24 at 9pm
Relaunch of The Thread Looks to Deepen Audience ConnectionTo foster a deeper connection with its growing audience, WGBH News recent-ly relaunched its weekly newsletter in a redesigned format. Called The Thread, the newsletter is intended to help listeners and readers cut out the noise from the busy news landscape
by distilling the most essential WGBH News stories each week.WGBH News Digital Managing Editor Laura Colarusso, who oversaw the
newsletter’s relaunch, said the goal of each issue is to deliver readers to a place where they can feel “well informed during a time in our country’s history marked by divisiveness and misinformation.” The newsletter will help pull back the curtain on the WGBH newsroom and initiate an ongoing dialogue with 89.7 FM listeners, WGBHNews.org readers and fans of Greater Boston, Beat the Press, Open Studio and Basic Black, she said.

WGBH News Partners with The World to Explore Caste Discrimination in the USIn collaboration with PRI’s The World, the WGBH News team recently completed a multi-part investigation into caste discrimination in the United States. The series focuses on the prejudice that the growing number of Indian immigrants in Massachusetts face when the rigid caste system from their native country follows them abroad.
To report on the series, a team of reporters and photographers, including veteran journalist Phillip Martin, traveled to India and explored local immi-

F ebruary has always seemed to be a difficult month. On one hand, while winter’s end is probably closer than its beginning,
it still feels like a long stretch before warmer days will be here. On the other hand, it’s the month that includes Valentine’s Day. Because it’s said that music is the food of love, where better to spend that day than right here on WCRB?
So, although I won’t tell you exactly what you’ll hear on Valentine’s Day, I can assure you it will be filled with romantic favorites and music that speaks of love. It’s our musical valentine to our listeners.
But there are 27 other days of the month, and those too will be filled with the wide range of music, hand-picked to make your days that much

As for special broadcasts this month, our week-end cornerstone programs—Boston Symphony Orchestra Broadcasts and WCRB In Concert—are filled with incredible performances. The schedule below is a guide to these offerings. And don’t forget to listen Sunday nights to Voices with Chris Voss, our weekly exploration into that most unique instrument, the human voice.
Happy Valentine’s Day! May your month be filled with the music we love to play for you!

What’s on WCAI Online: capeandislands.orgOn-air: 90.1 Martha’s Vineyard, 91.1 Nantucket, 94.3 Brewster, 89.7 HD3 Boston
E very year, the third graders at the Martha’s Vineyard Tisbury School start
buzzing about valentines in January. Why so early? They work for many weeks composing and rehearsing valentine radio poems for their families:
Roses are red,Violets are blue,You love me,And I love you!
Dan Tritle, WCAI host and production director, makes his annual trek to the school library to record the students reading their poems, which then air on WCAI during Valentine’s Day. The activity was started by third-grade teacher Jill Waxweiler about 10 years ago, and it continues to this day as a school library project, coordinated by librarians Whitney Burke and Kathryn Harcourt.
When January rolls around, the kids really look forward to creating and reading their special verses, Burke said. “Sometimes they are nervous at first,
but the excitement of recording their poems wins out,” she said. “One current fourth-grade student said, ‘I liked how we did it on the radio because a lot of people heard it.’”
Moving the Valentine’s Day recordings from the classroom to the library made sense, Burke said. “It works well as a library activity because libraries are about creating lifelong learners, and there’s something very exciting about hearing your own work on the radio,” she said.
“Parents love it too, and luckily WCAI keeps the link up on their webpage.”Tritle said he enjoys this yearly trip. “The kids are so sweet, and some of
the poems are very creative,” he said. “It’s a nice way of inviting children into the world of public radio.”
Want to get into the Valentine’s Day spirit? Listen to this year’s poems on WCAI throughout the day on Feb.14, or check them out on the WCAI website: capeandislands.org.
