AN OFFENSE FOR A GAME OFTEN

When Irv Sigler first brought the Power-t to Olivet College in 2002, people in the M.I.A.A. said that he could never run the offense at the college level. They told him that college players and defenses were too good to run such a pre-historic high school offense. Well on November 13, 2004 people were singing a different toon. Thatwas the day that Olivet beat Albion College for the first time in 28 years. It wasn’t just a win, but a butt kicking contest as we won the day 58-35 and finished with 583 total yards of offense.2004 was also the year that we solidified ourselves as the nations top rushing football team in all of college football. We finished the season as the #1 rushing team with an average of 417.1 yards pergame. 417.1 happens to be the third highest regular season rushing total in NCAA history. Between 2003-2004 we led the country in rushing with an average of 401.5 yards per game on the ground. That’s a pretty good average for a pre-historic high school offense!It was a tremendous honor to serve Olivet College’s football team as the offensive line coach for these three seasons. Irv taught the entire staff how to coach and how to win. So much so that threemembers of the Olivet staff went on to become head football coaches at the high school level.It’s with gratitude and respect that I dedicate this presentation of the Olivet College Power-t to all of the offensive coaches from 2002-2004:

THINGS CHANGED AGAIN IN 2005WHEN THE NEW COACHING STAFF DECIDED TO GO AWAY FROM THE POWER-T TO THE MORE CONVENTIONAL COLLEGE OFFENSIVE GAME IN SEARCH OF BALANCE. WITH THE SAME PERSONNEL THE 2005 OFFENSE WAS INEFFECTIVE THROUGHOUT MUCH OF THE SEASON.

• Without the Power-t, Olivet’s offensive production was down from the previous three seasons average. The only statistic that showed an increase was number of pass attempts and average passing yards per game. HOWEVER,the Power-t only produced 17 interceptions over a three year period and the 2005 offense committed 13. The program appears to be slipping back into the state it was before 2002.

• THE BASIC PHILOSOPHY OF THE POWER-T OFFENSE IS ONE OF SIMPLICITY AND SEQUENTIAL LEARNING. THE TRAPPING GAME IS STRONGLY EMPHASIZED, AND MIS-DIRECTION AND COUNTER-ACTION ARE BUILT INTO THE OFFENSE. THE PASSING GAME IS ONE OF ACTION PASSING WITH A BUILT IN RUN-PASS OPTION ATTACK. EVEN WITH AVERAGE PERSONNEL, THE POWER-T WILL ALLOW A TEAM TO CONTROL THE FOOTBALL AND GIVE THEM THE GREATEST OPPORTUNITY FOR VICTORY IN THE FOURTH QUARTER.

What is CO-OP Blocking? A CO-OP Block is executed by two adjacent offensive players blocking a down defender and a linebacker stacked over him. The two offensive players will step with adjacent feet at the crotch of the down defender. As they make contact with the defender, the offensive player on the inside (post man) will keep his eyes inside in case the stacked linebacker wants to come inside or the down defender pinches inside. If the outside offensive player (lead man) feels the down defender pinch down inside, he can move to the next level and block the linebacker.

Generally the 65 is a defense that you will see in short yardage and on the goal line. Teams like to stunt to gap 8 out of this set when backed up. It’s often advantageous to use a down blocking scheme when this occurs, but you can still get the job done with base.

THEM TO BRING IT STRAIGHT BACK ALONG SIDE THEIR BODIES AS FAR BACK AS POSSIBLE WITHOUT FORCING THEIR HEAD AND SHOULDERS DOWNWARD.

• B. YOU ARE COACHING THEM TO BRING THEIR ARM BACK SO THEY CAN CREATE AS MUCH PRE-STRETCH AS POSSIBLE. THIS WILL ALLOW YOUR PLAYERS TO GENERATE THE MAXIMUM AMOUNT OF POWER INTO THE BAG (OR MAN).

• C. AS HIS ARM COMES FORWARD YOUR PLAYER SHOULD MAKE CONTACT ON THE BAG WITH AN UPWARD MOVEMENT AND THE ENTIRE SURFACE SHOULD BE ON THE BAG ON IMPACT.

• - COACH YOUR PLAYERS TO MAKE CONTACT OR HIT ON THE RISE.• - THIS BLOW IS MUCH LIKE A BOXER’S UPPER CUT PUNCH.• - YOUR PLAYERS MUST UNDERSTAND THAT THE CENTER OF THEIR

POWER IS LOCATED ON AN IMAGINARY LINE THAT GOES FROM THE MIDDLE OF THEIR FOREHEAD DOWN THROUGH THE MIDDLE OF THEIR TORSO. POWER MOVEMENTS THAT ARE PARALLEL AND IN LINE WITH YOUR POWER LINE WILL REDUCE YOUR POWER POTENTIAL AND LESSON YOUR IMPACT ON THE BAG OR A DEFENDER.

• - YOUR PLAYERS HEAD WILL SLIDE TO THE SIDE AS CONTACT IS BEING MADE TO ALLOW THE ENTIRE BLOCKING SURFACE THROUGH THE BAG (DEFENDER).

• - THROUGHOUT THE ENTIRE DRILL YOUR PLAYERS HEADS SHOULD BE UP, PERFECTLY VERTICLE TO THE GROUND AND HIS EYES ARE TO THE SKY.

• - AS CONTACT IS BEING MADE HIS HIPS ROLL FORWARD AND HIS CROTCH WILL BE ON THE GROUND.

• - WHEN MOVEMENT HAS STOPPED YOUR PLAYER SHOULD BE IN A PERFECT FIT ON THE BAG. IF HE HITS THE BAG HARD ENOUGH TO KNOCKTHE BAG BACK OFF THE LINE HIS CHEST MAY END UP ON THE GROUND.

• 2. ALIGNMENT: • A. HAVE YOUR PLAYERS ALIGN HEAD UP ON THE BAG, THEN HAVE

THEM REACH OUT UNTIL THEY ARE EXTENDED ARMS DISTANCE FROM THE BAG.

• B. YOUR PLAYERS SHOULD REACH OUT AND EXTEND THEIR ARM FOR THE PROPER SEPERATION FROM THE BAG AFTER PROPER KNEE BEND IS OBTAINED. IF YOUR PLAYER REACHES OUT WHILE HE IS STANDING HE WILL END UP TOO CLOSE TO THE BAG.

• 3. DRILL COMMAND AND PROCEDURE:• A. “STEP AND HIT RIGHT SHOULDER ON CADENCE.”• B. ON CADENCE THE PLAYER WILL STEP WITH HIS OPPOSITE FOOT

FIRST, IN THIS INSTANCE IT IS HIS LEFT FOOT. THEN HE WILL TAKE A SECOND STEP WITH HIS RIGHT FOOT AS HE STRIKES THE BAG. IMMEDIATELY AFTER CONTACT BRING HIS THIRD STEP SO HE CAN SQUARE HIS FEET UP.
