President’s LetterGreetings! As we move in to February, I continue to wonder if we are really going to have a winter this year or not. Seeing the snow on the ground and record low temperatures would be encouraging to all of us in this industry!

OCAPL continues to be one of the largest local associations across the nation. During January, we surpassed our membership forecast for the entire year, and have had over 1,300 people either place membership or renew their membership. This year may very well be one of the largest years OCAPL has seen. This should be encouraging to our entire membership because it means that more and more Landmen, either field or in-house, want to be affiliated with our organization and be bound by our standards of practice and code of ethics.

Our second CPL luncheon of the year took place on February 6, 2012 at the Petroleum Club, where John Mackechnie gave a presentation to our members at the CPL Luncheon, titled, “Did a home-steaders grant to a railroad of an interest in a strip of land convey the fee or an easement?”. John provided case law explaining how the interest is treated when lands under a railroad is involved.

We continued the day with another chance to earn CPL/RPL credits, our Monday Night Meeting. Every February is Past President’s Night, and this year, we were honored to have our very own, Mr. Jack Richards, the current AAPL President, and past OCAPL President, here to speak to us about “What is happening at AAPL”. Jack shared with us what some of us may have not ever known about AAPL. He discussed its organization, purpose, current projects, management, membership, education/certification, financial position and staff. A lot of time was spent explaining the history behind NAPE and how NAPE is currently managed. This year’s Winter NAPE 2012 will be the 20th anniversary of winter NAPE, and is expected to be one of the largest. This night was also very important because we recognized the past President’s of OCAPL. We had quite a few in attendance and again, we thank you all for your service and dedication to OCAPL now and in the past.

As most of you have probably heard, QEP (Questar) is closing its Oklahoma City office and moving to Tulsa. With this move, we are losing three of our current board members and we will miss them greatly. Jack Taylor has been a long- time board member and past President and he currently serves as our AAPL Director. Jack will continue to serve in this capacity until July 1, at which time, Kent Loeffler will assume the role for the remainder of the year. Stan Wilsey currently serves as Vice-President and he has resigned effective immediately. Scott Stone has graciously agreed to step in and assume the responsibilities of Vice-President for the remainder of 2012. Colt Parks currently serves as our Membership Chairman and his role will be filled by Ryan Coe. We truly appreciate all that each one of these individuals has done for OCAPL.

Our next Monday Night Meeting will be March 5, 2012, and will be held at the Petroleum Club downtown. Please note that the schedule is different for this Monday Night Meeting. Mr. Aubrey McClendon will be our guest speaker and we will open the doors at 5 pm for cocktails and appetizers and Mr. McClendon is scheduled to speak at 6:00. Please look for an email with further details in the coming weeks.

The American Association of Professional Landmen and the AAPL Educational Foundation invite you to attend a FREE Field Landman Seminar to be held at Willow Creek Golf & Country Club, 6501 S. Country Club Drive, Oklahoma City, OK on Thursday April 12th, starting at 5:00pm. The Trustees of the AAPL Educational Foundation initiated these events to provide a forum for field landmen to gather for education, networking, and good food, all at no cost to all AAPL Active Members and $50.00 to non-members attending. This program designed for Field Landmen to have the opportunity to register to become a member of the AAPL. The $50.00 registration fee covers this education class, happy hour, buffet dinner, plus your first year of membership dues. Please note: You can fill out your application prior to attending this seminar and bring it with you for processing.
