Industrial acilities depend on oil/water separators to separate oilrom their waste water. While oil/water separators are a helpulcomponent to a plant’s wastewater system, oil/water separatorstraditionally do not provide an efcient method o removing oil onceit has been separated rom the waste stream.

Traditionally, the separator industry has either used overlow skimmer pipes or weirs, or has depended upon an outsideremoval frm to pump o the oil. While they are inexpensive touse, skim pipes/weirs have inherent problems because there isalways oil on the surace o the separator. Oil removal services areeective in removing the layer o oil, but they are expensive. They are needed continuously. and thereore they are an ongoingexpense. In either case, there always will be a problem o oil onthe surace o the separator.

Problem When oil is not continuously removed rom the surace o an oil/  water separator, several problems occur:

• Heavy rain or water ow can exceedthe design o the separator and washout the oil build-up.

• Failure to remove the oil causesexcessive oil build-up which increasesthe chance or the oil to escape andreduces the area o the separationchamber.

• The oil layer prevents oxygen romreaching the water, al lowinganaerobic bacteria to grow, thusplugging the separator plates andemitting oul odors.

• As the level is lowered or certainmaintenance procedures, or ascomponents are lited out, the tank walls and interior components become completely oil-coated. Also, i the unit is completely drained residual oil will escape intothe outlet piping and be released down stream upon reflling theseparator when bringing the system back on-line.

• The oil layer makes visual inspection o the coalescer andcomponents very difcult, i not impossible.

SolutionCompanies have tried a number o methods to remove oil rom theseparators and discovered that the installation o a “oating tube” oilskimmer with the separating device would eliminate the excess oil.The unit is manuactured by Oil Skimmers Inc. o Cleveland OH.
