Ohlone College Guided Pathways Meeting

Friday, March 22th, 2019 9:30 AM - 11:30 AM – CD107

Meeting Focus: Meta Majors

Agenda

Agenda A. Student Feedback B. Milestones/schedule C. Meta Major activity

Agenda Future Agenda, April 12: • AB 705 update (MacEwan) • Student Experience: getting help with coursework: faculty office hours,

tutoring, special programs, CE Cohorts, etc., Mike Leib (confirmed)

Please Note: Room Change, our next meeting is in 6107

Student Feedback Please note that the following feedback reflects individual feedback from

students

Student Feedback (ASOC, 3/1 and ICC, 3/4) • Dream • Design • Change • Guiding Principles • Meta Majors

Student Feedback, Clarify the Path • Nicer counselors, more compassionate • A student described that he was given the wrong information on which

classes to take (or there might have been a miscommunication) • A “majors” day that explains majors • Students asked to have majors and outcomes clarified and would like to

see more connections to internships or to extracurricular activities. • Students don’t understand why they have to take certain classes. How

does it relate to their major? Are the classes wasting their time and money?

Student Feedback, Clarify the Path

Student Feedback, Enter the path • A “majors” day that explains majors

• Ohlone is a just a stepping stone rather than a destination. People need

to view Ohlone as THEIR college.

• Lack of accessibility - not just when it comes to the physical location but

also a lack of accessibility to education for minority and low-income

students. (note from Isabel, this comment included technology)

Students want us to address this social justice issue.

Student Feedback, Stay on the Path • Don’t want to just go to school, they want Ohlone to be more of a community • A sense of school pride • Create a sense of belonging, create compassion, comfort • Construction is horrible/Cafeteria food is horrible • Commute between campuses • Make connections/build community at school that allows you to carry that

support into the outside world. • Have one central technology portal for all services.

Maybe Canvas can be that one system.

Student Feedback, Ensure Learning • Knowledge that goes beyond class and that reinforces personal

development • Smaller class sizes and more faculty • Portables and Hyman Hall – not inviting and conducive to learning

(insufficient daylighting – no windows, air conditioning problem)

Meta Majors Student Feedback

Meta Majors • Business • Health • Social Sciences • Arts/Design • STEM • Humanities

- Don’t like the term Meta Majors (recommendation: “Academic and Career Pathways.”)

- Seems too general and descriptive - Some students prefer Meta Major

labels that would describe a direction rather than a destination

- Can Meta Majors be related to the guiding principles?

- Some students liked the simplicity of this category, it’s easy to understand for HS students

Meta Majors • Create and Build • Communicate • Serve & Care • Explore & Investigate • Manage & Lead

- Action words should relate to the real world occupations

- Where does business major fit in? Create and Build?

- Technology?

Meta Majors • Healthy Earth • Art & Expression • Helping People • Society & Culture • Science & Globalization • Technology

- Deaf studies, which category? Society and Culture?

- Marketing, which category?
