Office of Nationally Competitive Awards: 2019-2020 Application Cycle
Welcome! This guide is meant to serve as a jumping off point for UTSA students
to explore awards and fellowships. The list of awards in this document are
organized alphabetically and are coded with the following markers:
Class-year eligibility
Academic area emphasis
Research emphasis
Service or Leadership emphasis
Experiential learning emphasis
Internationally-hosted
Students are encouraged to work with the Office of Nationally Competitive
Awards and Fellowships as early as possible to discuss the application process.
Preparation of materials for major award may take months of preparation, and
application materials should reflect this high level of preparation. Letters of
recommendation should be substantive reflections on the student that emphasize
their competitiveness for the award.
If you have questions about this process, please contact Andrew Chapman,
Honors College, Director of Nationally Competitive Awards and Fellowships at
Andrew.Chapman2@UTSA.edu.
Intuitional Endorsements for National Awards and Fellowships
Some awards may require an institutional endorsement. To request an
endorsement, students should first meet to signal intent to the listed advisor in
this guide or the advisor listed on the national award website. In order to receive
an institutional endorsement, students should submit copies of all application
materials, including letters of recommendation and required essays, no later than
30 days prior to the published deadline for the award. Please include your student
ID and current contact information when submitting the application materials.
The letter of endorsement, in most cases, will be a short statement that indicates
National Awards and Fellowship Information
the student, based on assessment of application materials, has the support of the
institution. It should not substitute as a letter of recommendation. Please note
that for some awards, the institution may have a quota of the number of students
that it can nominate or the institution may determine not to nominate a student
for further consideration. All requests will be considered by a committee made up
of faculty and administrators.

The foundation selects 55-65 students annually. The Foundation only reviews
approximately 600 nominated applications (not counting applications of those
who compete at their campuses but are not nominated). UTSA is allowed to
nominate 4 students each year for consideration and an additional 3 students
who have spent their first one or two years at another institution.
