ADVICE TO A KINGADVICE TO A KINGADVICE TO A KINGADVICE TO A KING
The Story takes us from the beginning to the end. From fall to redempon. From creaon to
eternal life. Along the way we get to see glimpses of people’s lives and the advice that is given
to them becomes priceless. God reminds Abraham that the promise is his if he will obey. God
tells Moses all that he wants out of his people and the reward for following. God tells Joshua
to be strong and courageous in the face of an enemy that they will face upon crossing the Jor-
dan. God’s advice and the advice from those who were near to God have always been of the
most help when followed.
As we enter Chapter 13 of The Story it opens with David’s life drawing to a conclusion and
Solomon taking his place as King of Israel. David was a man that knew very well the defeat
that comes from being away from God and the joy of victory when adjoined to God. David’s
advice is priceless to Solomon and to us as well as Solomon prepares for a new posion in life.
As we listen to David’s words, perhaps they can bring some wisdom upon us as well in what-
ever stage of life we find ourselves in.
I Kings 2: 1When David's me to die drew near, he commanded Solomon his
son, saying, 2
“I am about to go the way of all the earth. Be strong, and show
yourself a man, 3
and keep the charge of the Lord your God, walking in his
ways and keeping his statutes, his commandments, his rules, and his tesmo-
nies, as it is wri*en in the Law of Moses, that you may prosper in all that you
do and wherever you turn.
What more would you want out of a King? What more could you want out of a husband or a
son? What more could you want out of running a business? Or in how you conduct yourself at
school? What great lessons these are for all of us to consider this week as we look at the fol-
lowing:
Be strong: Where do I put my strength; from where do I gain my strength?
Show yourself a man: A man that takes responsibility, that owns his acons, that behaves
maturely.
Keep the charge of the Lord: The Lord has never mixed words when it came to his wishes
for obedience. Do you trust him enough to obey?
David knew from experience that when he kept all these things, he was prosperous. When he
stared down a giant, when he was victorious in ba4les, when he was successful against Saul
and at Ziklag. David also knew the severe consequences when he failed to obey this very ad-
vice he gives his son. What great advice for a King, what great advice from a King to us.

Ask Any Farmer
Ask any farmer and he will tell you that the suc-
cess of any crop depends, to a great extent, upon the
type of soil on which the seed is sown. Yes, there are
other variables but that is extremely important. Jesus
spoke about four soil types. You and I are like one of
the four types. Remember this very important point:
each of you chooses the type of “soil” he will be. This is
not a pre-determined factor.
Those seed that fell along the hardened path-
way are those who hear the word but the devil comes
along and takes away the word from their hearts so
that they will not believe and be saved.
The seed which fell on the rocks are the ones
who receive the word joyfully but they have no root
structure. They believe for a while but when things get
tough they fall away.
Third, the seed which fell among the thorny
plants represent those who hear and start growing but
later are choked out by life’s worries, riches and pleas-
ures thus they do not mature as they were expected to
do.
However those seed which fell on the good soil
represent those who with a noble and good heart hear
the word, retain it, and by persevering produce a good
crop at harvest me.
The primary point is that each of us determines
what kind of soil he will be. What kind of soil do you
choose to be? Your future depends on it!
