Objective:

TO Understand the what Unlimited and

Limited Government are.

To Understand how both were used in

Europe during the 1600s & 1700s

UNLIMITED GOVERNMENT

In an unlimited government there is almost no ability to limit the actions of the government!

This system of government is Authoritative!

Total Obedience to the Government is more important that Individual Freedom!

LIMITED GOVERNMENT

In a limited government there are RESTRAINTS OR Rules placed on the Power the Government has.

In a Limited Government….. citizens have Individual Rights and CAN Participate in Government!

Constitutional Monarchy

Parliament System(England)

EUROPE IN THE 1600S & 1700S

Most European Countries Governments were Monarchies.

These Governments were led by a King or Queen who often were advised by the leadership of the CATHOLIC CHURCH

ENGLAND FRANCE SPAIN & RUSSIA

Were all MONARCHIES

“ABSOLUTE” MONARCHY

Absolute Monarchy is when a King rules by

the Power of “Divine Right”

This type of Monarch (King) ruled from the believe that his power came directly from

GOD

USING THE CHURCH FOR CONTROLL

Most Europeans were # 1 illiterate( unable to read and write )

Their lives were centered around the daily survival of life and Church.

# 2 Citizens Believed in and Feared the Church.

The King used these two things to manipulate a majority of citizens into never QUESTIONING his POWER from GOD

ABSOLUTE MONARCHY

BEGINNING OF GOVERNMENT CHANGE IN EUROPE

In 1215 A change took Place in ENGLAND that changed EUROPE forever.

English Nobles FORCED king JOHN to Sign the MAGNA CARTA

This document said that the King was no longer above the law and his power would be LIMITED

The Magna Carta was an UN-WRITTEN Constitution!that eventually led to the Creation and signing of the

ENGLISH BILL OF RIGHTS !
