MATH & SCIENCE HSE/GED (High School Equivalency) Part Time Instructor The Central Queens YM & YWHA is seeking a part time teacher to join their staff as a Pre-HSE
Instructor for Math and Science.
The qualified instructor will facilitate instruction in Pre-HSE preparation for young adults and
adolescents within our community based educational setting to take the New York State
Equivalency TASC Exam. The instructors will be responsible for teaching up to 25 students who
test at varying grade levels in reading, writing, science, and social studies. The HSE Instructor
will be expected to have the capacity to teach all levels including ABE, Pre-HSE, and HSE,
contingent on the needs of the program's participants.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The HSE Instructor will:
1. Facilitate instruction in math and science subject areas of the TASC exam.
2. Plan, prepare and teach lessons in accordance with the curriculum and using a variety of
methodologies with the purpose of passing the new GED exam- TASC.
3. Attend instructional workshops that will discuss all subtests of the new TASC exam.
4. Monitor student progress and attendance.
5. Work as a team with staff in program planning and student performance.
6. Maintain constant contact with staff members on student’s performance and attendance.
7. Engage and retain students through creative teaching styles.
8. Have the ability to demonstrate effective practice of differentiation of instruction in small
group setting.
9. Establish and enforce rules for behavior and procedures for effective classroom
management.
Additional Qualifications:
○ NYS Board Certified Teacher preferred.
○ Strong interest and passion in working with at risk youth.
○ Able to multitask efficiently and effectively.
○ An upbeat personality and pleasant demeanor.
○ Must have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
○ Must have strong organizational skills.
○ Must have a commitment to work from a strength based and/or youth
development perspective.
○ Familiarity with the TASC/GED test preferred.
○ Ability to establish a rapport with students and maintain an environment that
supports learning.
Hours: Part-Time
Mondays and Wednesdays 10:00 am to 3:00 pm
First Cycle: January 8th 2018
Salary: Commensurate with experience
