Sanctus, Sanctus, the Padre said
And a thousand men bowed the head,
No loud commands or shouted word,
The Mass in latin all understood.
Of different ranks ages and race,
In a land of conflict - a desolate place.
With weapons of war about our feet
The ancient responses did repeat.
Australian men tough and strong
From Wagga Wagga or Dannedong,
Proud Fijians fit and able -
Africans from the Nile’s cradle.
Catholics from the Himalayas,
Malaccan Christians of West Malaya,
Irishmen both South and North,
Hardy Scotsmen of Clyde and Forth.
Devout believers from Singapore,
Maori giants of New Zealand’s shore.
From his Jeep’s altar – a handbell tolled
And the rites of Mass to us he told.
Old veterans of many campaigns
Children once more we became,
Remembering our first Communion day,
Wondering when and where went astray.
Confirmation sacrament all well knew,
Soldiers of Christ – sworn to be true.
Some mindful also of their lapsed souls,
Food for thought when in Foxholes!
When the Lords word to us was read
Was here and there a tear shed,
And thoughts of Masses far away
Where we learned to kneel and pray?
At this solemn rite all were intent,
No blessed candles or incense,
Strange and surreal the atmosphere,
To a man - believed that God was near.
A bond between us soldier men –
The Mass in latin by our Chaplain,
He said, “Ita Missa”, in peace go,
At that soldiers Mass of long long ago.
A Soldiers Mass

A couple
of weeks
ago I drove
past the bottle banks
in Cregmore and was
shocked to see the state
of them. Rubbish was
strewn all over the ground
beside the banks. The
banks themselves were
over flowing and bottles
and glass were also strewn
at the base. So much for
recycling! Are we ever going to educate people to use
these banks appropriately or will they have to be moved
again? They had been in Claregalway before and had to
be moved because of this very same problem. Opposite
are some photos taken at the time.
Another problem occurring in the village of Claregalway
is dog poo! Since the implementation of our foot paths,
we now have lots of walkers etc using them which is
great but we have also dogs destroying them with dog
poo. City Hall in Galway supply free dog scoopers and
it is in the interest of everyone to use them. It’s not
nice to have to walk on footpaths covered in dog poo.
Owners please take note.
It was brought to my attention recently about the signs
in Claregalway being changed to Gaeilge. I made
enquiries to Galway County Council and was told that
all approach signs to Claregalway will now be in Gaeilge
as we are in the Gaeltacht area. They look unsightly at
the moment but I have been assured that they will be
improved in time (once funding is secured)!
October is Supper Theatre time and it’s an event we
all look forward to every year -make sure you keep the
dates free to attend. You will not be disappointed! Best
of luck and enjoyment to all involved.
Until next time, Josette

Claregalway Community CentreActivities in Claregalway Community Centre are back in full
swing after the summer break. A number of camps were held
during July and August which were very well attended.
The days are getting shorter as winter approaches and the centre
provides a wide range of activities to keep you busy.
Activities for adults include badminton, basketball,
indoor soccer, football and, new this year, yoga and
vegetable growing classes.
The community centre also caters for more than 600 children
weekly, with basketball, badminton, gymnastics, irish dancing,
power soccer, a No Name club, a youth club and regular fully
supervised discos.
A toddler group is run every Wednesday morning and the local
schools have full access to the community centre.
Feis are run throughout the year and every March the centre
is transformed into a theatre for the annual Festival of Drama.
The community centre is also a perfect venue for children’s
birthday parties, especially with our unreliable climate and there
is plenty of availability on Sunday afternoons and during
school breaks.
A number of slots are still available in the main hall and there is a
meeting room available for meetings or smaller group activities.

Symptoms of Gum Disease Periodontitis
Mon,Thurs,Fri: 9am-5pm
Tues, Wed: 8am-7pm
Continued on page 13
Do you suffer from Loose Teeth, Sensitive Teeth, Receding Gums? These are just some of the symptoms of a severe form of gum disease called Periodontitis, which can lead to tooth loss.
Periodontitis1
now available.Tel: 091 798 333.
Loyalty Card
Gum disease (also known as gingivitis) causes red and inflamed
(swollen) gums bleeding gums when brushing teeth. Gum
disease is caused by a build-up of plaque on the teeth. Plaque is
a sticky substance made up of bacteria. It is usually removed by
brushing the teeth but, if it builds up, the bacteria can irritate
the gums and cause inflammation (swelling).
Periodontitis is a more severe form of gum disease
that can occur following gingivitis.
In periodontitis, the inflammation that affects the
gums also affects:
the tissue that connects the tooth to the tooth socket,
called the periodontal ligament
the bone in the jaw that contains the sockets of the teeth,
called the alveolar bone
Periodontitis can cause a gap to develop between the tooth
and the gum, making the tooth feel loose and even fall out.
If you go on to develop periodontitis, you may not notice any
symptoms, or the swelling and bleeding of your gums may get
worse. Other possible symptoms include:
Bad breath (halitosis)
A foul taste in your mouth
Receding gums, so that more of your tooth is visible
Sensitive teeth, for example pain when hot or cold liquid
touches your teeth
Pus coming from the gums
Loose teeth, which may make eating difficult
Teeth falling out
Abscesses (painful collections of pus forming on your
gums or under your teeth)
Symptoms of Periodontitis2
Causes3
Gum disease (gingivitis) and periodontitis can be caused by a
variety of factors, but the most common cause is ineffective
oral hygiene, which leads to a build-up of plaque. Plaque is a
soft, sticky substance that is made when bacteria collect on the
surface of your teeth.
Sometimes, when plaque is not removed, it can harden and form
another substance, known as tartar. Tartar sticks much more
firmly to teeth than plaque, and can usually only be removed by
a dentist or dental hygienist.

Following the cuts to PRSI & the Medical Card we have introduced a Loyalty Card Scheme to help ease the effects of these cutbacks.Contact Joan now to make an appointment on 091 798 333.
Factors that can increase your risk of developing gum disease
and periodontitis include:
Smoking, Diabetes having a weakened immune system , for
example due to a condition such as chemotherapy , Family
History of Gum Disease
Part of the solution for gum disease (gingivitis) and periodontitis,
is to practice good oral hygiene. Further treatment, undertaken
by your dentist, may also be required.
Good oral hygiene involves:
Brushing your teeth for 2-3 minutes twice a day (in the
morning and last thing at night)
Using an electric toothbrush if possible
Using a toothpaste that contains fluoride if your water
Supply is low in fluoride (fluoride is a natural mineral that
helps to protect against dental decay
Flossing your teeth regularly
Not smoking
Seeing your dentist regularly (at least once every 6 months)
If you have periodontitis and do not receive treatment, you may
develop a series of further complications. These can include:
Recurrent gum abscesses (painful collections of pus)
Increasing damage to the periodontal ligament (the tissue
that connects the tooth to the socket)
Increasing damage to the alveolar bone (the bone in the
jaw that contains the sockets of the teeth)
Receding gums
Loose teeth
Loss of teeth
See your dentist immediately if you think you have gum
disease (gingivitis) or periodontitis. Remember, the sooner the
condition is treated the better the long-term outcome. If you
ignore the symptoms of periodontitis you are very likely to loose
your teeth.

October update from your local Councillor, Jim CuddyCregboy N17 road works
I am glad to be able to say that after over a
year and a half campaigning for road works
to be carried out on the N 17 at Cregboy
the work has been done and from the
feed back I have been getting motorists
seem to be happy with the outcome You
will recall that these road works had to
be done as a result of subsidence of the
hard shoulder on the Galway side of the
Cregboy Rd. junction.
Proposed flood relief works
A large number of concerned residents
attended a meeting in the Claregalway
Hotel on the night of the 23rd.
September. The meeting was addressed
by representatives of the County Council,
Office of Public Works, Ryan Hanley
Consultants and some local Oireachtas
and council members. While there was
welcome for the works that are proposed
to be carried out upstream from the
Claregalway bridge there was however
extreme annoyance that nothing was
proposed to be done at this time in
relation to places like Cloonbiggeen and
Montiagh. The consultants Ryan Hanley
had a brief to deal only with the flooding
issues upstream from the Claregalway
Bridge. I understand that the consultants
report alone cost in the region of 80,000
euro. The OPW officials at the meeting
said that they intend to carry out a
survey next year covering the area of the
Corrib itself. As outlined at the meeting
an archeological dig has to be carried
out near the Claregalway Bridge before
works can start because of its proximity
to the Claregalway Castle and the Old
Abbey. This study is not expected to take
long. When works have been done on the
Claregalway Bridge the OPW will then
move upstream to Crusheen Bridge.
Flood relief works on the N 18 at Lydican
I am glad to be able to say that following
securing funding secured from the OPW
and the Minister responsible that flood
relief works have started. The money for
this work was made possible following
a very comprehensive report which was
submitted by Deputy Noel Grealish.
There will be a traffic management plan
in place near Horkans garden centre for
the duration of these works so I would
advise motorists to be extra careful when
going through this area. When that work
is finished I will be asking the council to
deal with the flooding problems in the
Cloonacauneen area for which money is
allocated.
Hedge Trimming
I have been informed by the council that
it is hoped to do the hedge trimming
works which I have requested starting
next Wednesday October 6th.
Flooding at Church Car Park
Following on from representations made
by Deputy Noel Grealish and myself to
Galway Co. Co. the council have agreed
to carry out works to provide additional
water pipes to take the water from the
car park. Some week ago the church
was nearly flooded after a heavy rain
downpour when the existing drainage
system was not able to cope on that
occasion. Towards that end I will be
committing some of my discretionary
funding towards this work.

Juvenille:
On Sunday morning Oct 3rd, there was
a great final played between the boys of
Claregalway and Moycullen in Spiddal.
These two teams have met a number of
times this year and they are both very
evenly match. Both teams played really
good football and it was a very tight, close
fought encounter for the entire game.
The level of skill and determination from
both teams augurs well for the future.
Many players on both team are under 12
again next year. Moycullen have great
fast footballers and have a great panel with
many young up and coming stars. The
Claregalway team has played excellent
football all year and were unbeaten this
year in both the Under 11 City League
and in this Under 12B competition.
Claregalway GAA Update
In the first half, the game ebbed and
flowed and with a big pitch, the full panel
of players was needed for both teams. The
Claregalway goalkeeper Kevin Daly has
been a class act all season and kept a clean
sheet again on Sunday. The full back line
of Sean Kilmartin, Ciaran Hynes and
Iarla Keating were on top and kept a very
tight reign all day. They have played as a
great unit all season and the speed of Sean
coupled with the tackling and tenacity of
Iarla complemented the great fielding of
the full back Ciaran. All half back, Mark
King, Tommy Molloy and Jamie Mc
Gough did everything right and were the
pivotal players during the first half with
continuous Moycullen pressure. The
tight marking of Mark King was a feature
all season. Jamie is the teams versatility
player and had a great game in the half
back line. Tommy has been a real find in
his first season.
In the midfield area, captain Tomas Cogley
led by example with Jack Hansbury
working hard and doing great running.
Matthew Kilgannon, the engine of the
team, played a hurling game earlier in the
morning, tracked up and down the pitch
all day and played a pivotal role and an
intelligent game. The half forward line
included some of our star performers.
Keelan Grainger and Sean Lyons are very
skilful and caused problems all day for the
Moycullen backs as they have done all
season. The dynamo Ronan Manning
was a joy to watch and scored a cracking
goal in the first half.
The rotating full forward line worked
a treat for Claregalway. Evan Kenny,
Ronan Mc Donagh and Aaron Molloy
were first up and caught great balls
coming in from the backs. Aaron scored
www.nuachtchlair.com | 19
a great goal in the second half at a critical
time in the game. Next up, Conor
Harte, Shane O’ Gorman and Keith ‘The
Bomber’ Field played havoc with the
Moycullen defense. Conor and Shane
have great skill and always look up for the
best options. Robbie Culkeen was always
a threat at corner forward and has done
well all season. Dean Niland and Tom
Hansbury came in at a critical juncture
in the game and shored up the defense.
Dean made some great clearances during
the second half and Tom really tackled
well. Daniel Grealish played a pivotal
part in the qualifying games. It was a
day that all players in the squad made
significant contribution, but special
mention must go to Tomas Cogley,
Jamie McGough, and Dean Niland. The
captain and mentors thanked Moycullen
for a great game and acknowledged the
fact that these two teams are very evenly
matched with nothing between them on
any given day. The Claregalway mentors
John Kimartin, Ja Keating, Kevin
Kilgannon, Noel Grealish, John Loftus
and Mike Field thanked the parents for
their support during the year and also
Tadhg O’Conghaile, the referee Tomas
O Faharta and everyone in Coiste
Peil na nÓg.
Ladies:
U16 Ladies play Salthill/Knocknacarra
in their County Final this Saturday 9th
October having defeated Caltra in the
semi final played on Wednesday 29th
September. Throw in is scheduled for
11.30 with the venue still to be fixed.
U-14 Ladies: Claregalway Ladies were
well represented at the U-14 County
Finals over the weekend. First into action
were the clubs Tigers who played St
Furseys in Belclare on Sunday morning
in the D Championship Final. St Furseys
started the better and dominated the
opening half but some great defending
by the Claregalway backs restricted the
oposition scoring and with Amy Fahy
netting 3 goals Claregalway led by 3-1
to 0-2 at the break. The second half was
very even but again the ability of the
Claregalway forwards to get goals resulted
in a great victory for Claregalway on a
score of Claregalway 6-7 St Furseys 1-5.

Tuam-Cortoon. Later Sunday afternoon
the U-14 Lions panel travelled to Tuam
Stadium where they renewed rivalry
with Kilkerrin-Clonberne in the A
Championship Final. Played in ideal
conditions it was Claregalway playing
into the town end that got the ideal start
scoring 1-4 without reply in the opening
10mins. Kilkerrin-Clonberne then got
on the scoresheet with a pointed free but
Clargalway hit five more points including
a magnificent effort from centreback
Megan Glynn to lead at the break by
1-9 to 0-1. Claregalway kept up the
tempo in the second half and with Louise
Brennan hitting some wonderful points
and sub Ciara Campbell finding the
Clonberne net Claregalway ran out easy
winners on a score of 2-15 to 1-3. This
brought to an end a great year for this
Claregalway Team having already won
the County and National Feile in July.
Kilkerrin-Clonberne also contributed a
huge amount to U-14 football in 2010
winning the County Div 1 League and
All-Ireland sevens. Claregalway Team:

The U12 Ladies played away to Michael
Breathnachs in the Semi Final of the A
Championships on Wednesday the 29th
October. This was a match that could
have gone either away with both teams
sharing equal possession, particularly
in the first half. Michael Breathnachs
created many scoring opportunities but
were faced with a very determined back
line in Claregalway who let very little
pass them. After the break, Claregalway
increased their lead with brilliant work
from the midfielders and half back line
who continually fed the ball down into
the forward line where we managed to
convert almost every scoring opportunity.
The final score did not reflect the game
as Michael Breathnachs put up a brilliant
challenge, however, Claregalway came
out worthy winners in the end with a
final scoreline of 5-11 to 1-5. The Panel
was; Rebecca Downes, Laura King,
Rebecca Hansberry, Andrea Glynn,
Catriona Moran, Emma Connolly, Keeva
Gallagher, Laurie Moran, Ellie Glynn,
Orla O Gorman, Stephanie O Connell
(c), Leah Flemming, Laura Field, Ashling
Murphy, Eva Gilmore, Chloe Donnellan,
Clodagh Murphy, Ava Fitzmaurice, Aoife
Gavin, Gwen Horkan, Ava Fitzmaurice,
Leanne McArdle, Rachel O Brien,
Deirdre Keane, Aoife O Connell, Mia
Ainsworth. The U12’s now play Kilkerrin
Clonberne in the County Final which
is due to take place on Sunday evening
the 10th October. Venue and time to be
confirmed. Panel will be notified by text.

Galway Contact is a voluntary
organisation founded in 1981.
Our main aim is to help older
people who may feel lonely and
isolated, through weekly visits.
Organisation objective:
Is to hold out a hand of friendship, a
friendly face and supportive voice for our
older people in Galway.
Every visit is completely unique and
organised on a one-to-one basis. We are
very aware of the need for confidentiality
and sensitivity. Our visits are carried out
in a very discreet and unintrusive way.
How is our befriending visit set up:
Our referrals are from Public Health
Nurses, Galway City and Suburbs,
Social Workers UCHG and Merlin Park
Hospital, Neighbours, Family members
etc. (We only visit when requested.)
How do we recruit our volunteers:
Our volunteers are recruited through
Local Papers and Media. Each volunteer
is interviewed. (Under present regulations
it may be necessary for Galway Contact to
obtain Garda clearance for any volunteer
visiting an older person). Volunteers are
made aware of the need for confidentiality
and commkitment of their visit.
Our visits:
We cover all areas of Galway City and
Suburbs. We visit older people who are
living alone, (or some have family living
away), also Nursing Homes and Unit 5
and Unit 6 in Merlin Park Hospital. We
have a dedicated and loyal volunteer force
of 80 people. We are unique in so far as
our volunteers visit on a one-to-one basis.
We do not judge people, if someone
is lonely, we will offer friendship and
support if the person would like a visit
from our organisation. (Some may
strongly value their privacy and may not
wish to have a visit set up.)
Information Centre:
Various members of the public contact
us for information on various issues. We
liaise also with other organisations, the
Gardai, Health Service Executive, Public
Health Nurses and Social Workers. We
will follow up on any queries a person
might have.
Staying at Home:
Our organisation feels strongly that we
would like our older people to stay in
their homes for as long as possible with all
the facilities provided for them to enable
them to do so, if that is their wish, We are
in touch also with other agencies working
to support older people and it is important
that we stay in touch with each other.
Security:
In addition to our befriending role, we
make applications, allocate and install
Security Systems for those living alone,
i.e. Social Monitoring Pendent, Sensor
Lights, Locks, Smoke Alarms, to help
them feel safe and secure in their homes.
This would be at the request of the Older
Person, Public Health Nurse, Hospitals,
or the Gardai.
Morning Club:
We run a morning club every second
Friday, where the older person is
transported to and from the club by
our volunteers. They like to relax in
a friendly atmosphers, with various
activities, refreshments and most of all to
chat with each other.
Outings throughout the year:
We have a Retreat in May, a Summer
and Christmas Outing. We have a big
attendance at each of these outings, on
average 120. WE talke long stay people
out from Merlin Park Hospital, various
Nursing Homes in City and Suburbs, and
older people living at home.
Our volunteers will also provide transport
and give support to that person for the
whole day. We get support also from the
Red Cross, Wheelchair Association and
various other people.
