Nowitzki: Finals MVP must be from winning team

Updated JUN 16, 2015 3:25p ET

The incredible performances from LeBron James during the NBA Finals have raised an interestingquestion: can the Finals MVP come from the losing team?

While James has put up historic numbers and has carried a short-handed Cavs team through everygame, a former Finals MVP weighed in with his thoughts about the MVP not being awarded tosomeone from the winning team.

Here's what Dallas Mavericks star Dirk Nowitzki told Tim MacMahon at ESPN.com:

"For me, it's got to be somebody from the winner," Nowitzki said Tuesday before interacting withkids at a Mavs camp. "That's how I always viewed the MVP, even though LeBron is playing fromanother planet and he's singlehandedly keeping the series close. I've always believed the MVP has tocome from the winner.

"Steph [Curry] has played amazing the last couple of games. Even Steve Kerr said [Andre] Iguodalahas been their best player in the first four games. He's been phenomenal on both ends of the floor. So I'm sure you can find somebody from the Warriors if they pull through."
